Resolves #6072
Refs #4982

Important

Stacked PR 3 of 3. They need to be merged in order (1 first), not per se at the same time but is preferred.

Removes ESLint now that the preceding stack layers moved the retained lint checks into Oxlint. This is another step toward the TypeScript 7 migration tracked in #4982: typescript-eslint depends on the legacy TypeScript compiler API that TypeScript 7 replaces, while Oxlint and oxlint-tsgolint do not depend on that API.

Removed

  • eslint.config.js
  • Dev dependencies: eslint, @eslint/js, @eslint/compat, typescript-eslint, eslint-config-prettier, eslint-formatter-gha, and globals
  • eslint --fix from lint-staged
  • The lint:eslint* and lint:oxlint* scripts; lint and lint:fix now run Oxlint only, and lint:github uses Oxlint's GitHub formatter
  • The obsolete ESLint config copy from the Docker build
  • Documentation describing ESLint as an active linter

eslint-config-prettier is no longer needed because Prettier was replaced by Oxfmt, and none of the rules it disabled were enabled in the ESLint configuration. Oxlint's native .gitignore support replaces @eslint/compat's includeIgnoreFile; Oxlint's env settings replace the globals package.

ESLint's determinism restrictions are already enforced by the Oxlint configuration from the preceding stack PRs: eslint/no-restricted-properties is native to Oxlint, while eslint-js/no-restricted-syntax is provided by the official OXC oxlint-plugin-eslint package. That package remains as a small bridge for this single rule, not as an ESLint runtime/dependency.

In cherry-pick-milestone.yml the workflow now selects lint tools from the target release branch's package.json and invokes locally installed binaries only. It runs every declared linter: both Oxlint and ESLint when both are configured (as on v35), just Oxlint after ESLint is removed.

Verification

  • npm run lint / npm run lint:github — clean, Oxlint only
  • npm run typecheck — passes
  • npm run format:check — clean
  • npm run build-prod — passes (existing Vite/CSS/chunk-size warnings only)
  • Full npm test on the preceding stack layer: 9,416 passed, 1 skipped. Five assertions expect en-US number grouping while my environment defaults to nl-NL (for example 1.150 vs 1,150).
  • npm install --ignore-scripts afterwards completed

Local lint timing with the updated configuration: ESLint 45.3s, Oxlint 4.4s (about 10× faster; timings vary by machine).

Please complete the following:

  • I have added screenshots for all UI updates
  • I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file
  • I have added relevant tests to the test directory

Walkthrough

The project removes ESLint configuration, dependencies, and scripts. Lint commands use Oxlint. The cherry-pick workflow detects configured linters and runs their local executables. Documentation and the Docker build reflect these changes.

Explanation

The workflow change preserves lint checks for older release branches and selects tools from each target branch. The package, Docker, documentation, and lint-script changes support removal of ESLint from the current project. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Explanation

The pull request description is directly related to the changeset. It states that ESLint is removed, lists the removed files and dependencies, explains the replacement with Oxlint and Oxfmt, describes the cherry-pick-milestone workflow change, and reports verification steps. The description is specific and on-topic, so it passes this lenient check.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #6072 requires fully removing ESLint after the Oxlint migration. The reviewed changes remove eslint.config.js, ESLint dependencies and scripts from package.json, the lint-staged hook, Docker configuration, and active documentation. The cherry-pick workflow retains conditional ESLint support for release branches that still declare ESLint, which is consistent with its target-branch behavior. However, package-lock.json is excluded from review, so this assessment cannot verify that the lockfile contains no current-project ESLint dependencies.

Resolution

Provide reviewable evidence that package-lock.json has no current-project ESLint dependencies, or make the lockfile available for review.

Reviewed range: b7aa2db..ec22e3b (incremental).

Verdict: No issues found. 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).

The only change in this range is in .github/workflows/cherry-pick-milestone.yml: the backport prompt now says to run npx oxfmt --check when the target branch's package.json has oxfmt, and npx prettier --check otherwise. It is consistent with how the same step picks linters (it reads the target branch's package.json and runs only the locally installed binaries). Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

✅ Action performed

Comments resolved and changes approved.

Oxlint now covers the rule set ESLint enforced, so remove ESLint
and its TypeScript-ESLint, formatter-compatibility, and globals
dependencies. This removes the TypeScript compiler API dependency
that blocks the TypeScript 7 migration tracked in #4982.

Use oxlint for lint, lint:fix, lint:github, and lint-staged; update
the cherry-pick workflow, Dockerfile, and developer docs.
Keep the engine determinism guidance aligned with Oxlint. In the
backport workflow, run each linter declared by the release branch's
package.json using its local binary, so v35 runs both ESLint and
Oxlint while Oxlint-only branches run just Oxlint. Fail if neither
linter is configured, and allow both tools to Claude.
Tell backport Claude to run Oxlint alone when that is the target
branch's sole linter, or Oxlint followed by ESLint when both are
declared, then use the target branch's formatter check.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Verdict: Looks good. No new issues. Findings: 0 high, 0 medium, 0 low.

Code review: No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

I re-reviewed the whole PR (56d8ed6..a540b4f). Only new findings are listed here.

  • package.json: lint, lint:fix and lint:github now run Oxlint only, and lint-staged no longer calls eslint --fix. The ESLint dev dependencies are gone. oxlint-plugin-eslint stays because it provides the no-restricted-syntax DetMath rule.
  • Dockerfile and the docs (CLAUDE.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, README.md, docs/EnginePackageSplit.md) no longer refer to eslint.config.js or describe ESLint as an active linter.
  • .github/workflows/cherry-pick-milestone.yml: check.sh reads the target branch's package.json to decide which linters to run, and fails if that branch declares neither Oxlint nor ESLint. The wording note on the backport prompt (L96–98) from an earlier review still applies. It is not repeated here.
