Resolves #4982

Description:

Migrate the project to TypeScript 7 (7.0.2, the current stable).

TypeScript 7 ships no API so everything in the repo that used it has to move to a standalone TypeScript-aware parser. TypeScript 7.1 will have said API and its beta has been released however final release is not expected until December. We can upgrade and make needed changes (if any) at that time, but still move to TS7 now. In the future, we could also have a look at https://github.com/oxc-project/tsrs for type checking, written in Rust and even faster than the official Go version.

Blockers addressed:

Consumer Listed in #4982 Needs Now
.vscode/launch.json (ts-node) yes — runs the server through tsx
tests/TranslationSystem.test.ts yes parse oxc-parser
tests/LayerBoundaries.test.ts no parse + type erasure oxc-parser + oxc-transform
scripts/split-packages/*.ts (6 files) no parse + AST disabled, see below

Commits

  1. chore(devops): replace ts-node with tsx in the VS Code launch config
.vscode/launch.json now starts the server with node --import tsx
instead of node --loader ts-node/esm. The --experimental-specifier-resolution=node
flag goes with it: it is a no-op since Node 20, and tsx resolves the
repo's extensionless imports itself. ts-node is dropped from
dependencies — nothing else referenced it.

  2. chore(tests): scan translations with oxc-parser instead of the TypeScript compiler
tests/TranslationSystem.test.ts walks the AST with oxc-parser instead
    of ts.createSourceFile / ts.forEachChild.

  3. chore(tests): check the layer boundaries with oxc instead of the TypeScript compiler
tests/LayerBoundaries.test.ts parses with oxc-parser and erases types
with oxc-transform, which reproduces ts.transpileModule's import
elision. The shared AST helpers move to tests/util/sourceAst.ts.

  4. chore(devops): disable the split-packages codemod until the TypeScript 7.1 API ships
These files were used for the src/core split. See Split components into mono repo #1701. May be re-used as a base for coming splits,

The codemod and the analysis scripts next to it are built on the compiler
API. They are kept as they are, marked @ts-nocheck, and each entry point
now stops with an explanation instead of failing with
    ts.createSourceFile is not a function. docs/EnginePackageSplit.md
records that the next package split has to wait for TypeScript 7.1
(beta today as typescript@7.1.0-beta, final release expected in
December 2026), and how to re-enable the scripts.

  5. chore(devops): type-check with TypeScript 7.0.2
typescript goes from ^6.0.3 to ^7.0.2. CLAUDE.md and
CONTRIBUTING.md follow. For any VSCode users, the latter now points at the
TypeScript 7 native preview extension, since the bundled VS Code extension has no API to drive TS 7 with.

Measurements

npm run typecheck (root project plus each package's own tsconfig, 7
projects, Node 24.22):

TypeScript 6.0.3 TypeScript 7.0.2
npm run typecheck 41.1 s 10.0 s (4.1x)

The two migrated tests got faster too, because they no longer load the
TypeScript compiler:

tests/TranslationSystem.test.ts, the "en.json keys stay in sync with source
usage" test (median of 5 runs):

TypeScript compiler API oxc-parser
plain 1914 ms 1075 ms (1.8x)
under v8 coverage (npm run test:coverage) 5737 ms 1439 ms (4.0x)

tests/LayerBoundaries.test.ts, whole file (median of 5 runs):

TypeScript compiler API oxc-parser + oxc-transform
total 4.91 s 2.67 s (1.8x)

Why oxc-parser

It is the standalone TypeScript-aware parser, fits the
oxlint / oxfmt toolchain the repo already uses, and it is fast: it parses
all 1465 .ts/.tsx files of the repo without a single error.

@babel/parser would work too, but it only arrives transitively (through
magicast), so it would have to become a direct dependency anyway.

The rewrite is behaviour-preserving, and that was checked:

  • the translation scan produces exactly the same result with either parser —
2250 used keys, 1897 referenced static keys, 33 dynamic prefixes over the
    728 scanned files, with no divergence in either direction;
  • the boundary test's specifiers() returns the same list for all 724 files
it walks, and the homepage import graph it derives is identical.

Note for reviewers

npm test currently reports 5 failures in 4 client test files
(PastGameXpCard, ProfileCard, ProgressionModals, RewardTrack). They
fail the same way on main — they are pre-existing and unrelated to this PR.

Please complete the following:

  • I have added screenshots for all UI updates (no UI changes)
  • I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file (no user-facing text changes)
  • I have added relevant tests to the test directory (no new behaviour to cover; the two migrated tests keep their assertions)

Walkthrough

The project updates to TypeScript 7 and adds OXC parser tools. OXC replaces TypeScript compiler parsing in two test suites. Package-splitting scripts now check for the required compiler API before continuing. Documentation describes their disabled status under TypeScript 7.0.

Changes

TypeScript 7 tooling migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update TypeScript tooling
package.json, .vscode/launch.json, CLAUDE.md, CONTRIBUTING.md
The project updates TypeScript and adds OXC parser and transform dependencies. The debug configuration switches to tsx. The editor prerequisite and TypeScript version documentation are updated.
Move test parsing to OXC
tests/util/sourceAst.ts, tests/LayerBoundaries.test.ts, tests/TranslationSystem.test.ts
Shared OXC parsing and traversal helpers replace TypeScript compiler AST use in both test suites. The translation scanner handles plain template literals and excludes unsupported call and property forms.
Guard package-splitting scripts
scripts/split-packages/*, docs/EnginePackageSplit.md
The scripts call a shared compiler-API check before continuing, and type checking is disabled for these scripts. Documentation records the TypeScript 7.0 limitation and steps to re-enable the scripts when the replacement API is available.

Explanation

Issue [#4982] requests the TypeScript 7 upgrade and removal of its compiler-API blockers. The PR sets typescript to ^7.0.2, replaces ts-node with tsx in .vscode/launch.json, and moves the translation and layer-boundary tests to oxc-parser and oxc-transform. The current package scripts use oxlint and oxfmt, and package.json contains no typescript-eslint or prettier-plugin-organize-imports dependency. The compiler-API package-splitting scripts now stop with an explicit TypeScript 7.0 message and document the TypeScript 7.1 dependency.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed configuration, parser dependencies, test helpers, migrated tests, guarded package-splitting scripts, and documentation support the TypeScript 7 migration in [#4982]. No unrelated product, UI, or runtime feature changes appear in the supplied change summary.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a migration to TypeScript 7 under a chore(devops) scope. The changeset upgrades TypeScript from ^6.0.3 to ^7.0.2 in package.json and updates docs and tooling to match. The title is short, specific, and matches the primary objective, though it does not mention the parser replacements or the disabled package-splitting scripts. Those are secondary details that the title does not need to cover.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description directly matches the changeset. It explains the TypeScript 7.0.2 upgrade, Oxc parser migration, tsx launch configuration, disabled compiler-API scripts, documentation updates, and reported test status.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject computed property names in isKeyNamedPropertyAssignment.

isKeyNamedPropertyAssignment does not check whether the property key is computed. A key such as [labelKey] passes the /key$/i name test because its identifier ends in "key". The value is then scanned as a translation key. If that value starts with an en.json root and is not in en.json, the missing-key test reports it. The current repository has no source that triggers this. A future source could.

Add a check so that computed keys return false before the name test runs. The predicate should reject node.computed in the same way it rejects shorthand, methods, and non-init kinds.

No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

Scope checked: the new node.computed guard in isKeyNamedPropertyAssignment (tests/TranslationSystem.test.ts). It brings back the old TypeScript-API behaviour, where isKeyNamedProperty returned false for a ComputedPropertyName. Without the guard, { [key]: value } would have counted as a key-named property, because oxc reports the computed expression key as an Identifier.
