Creates one "worker" queue that delegates to all of the task types (by importing all of the processors).

This enables the worker machine to set one concurrency: 1 limit, and actually have one task running per machine, rather than applying that limit per task type.

This also means bullmq will reuse the same thread pool for different tasks types, rather than managing a separate pool for each worker.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved protection against deleting S3 objects that have been rewritten. Removal is now skipped when the object’s current state does not match the expected state, including when no modification timestamp was captured.
  • Reliability
    • Background tasks now run through a shared worker queue, with cancellation signals passed through to task operations. This helps ongoing work respond consistently to cancellation requests.

📝 Walkthrough

Task jobs now use one shared worker queue. A worker dispatches each job to a processor selected by task name. Task callbacks use the job’s abort signal, and the delete-S3-object processor now checks whether an object has changed before removing it.

Changes: Worker queue and task dispatch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared queue contract and job creation
packages/bullmq/src/tasks/types.ts, packages/bullmq/src/queues.ts
The worker queue input pairs a task name with its task-specific data. createJob enqueues task data and the task name on the shared queue, with a task-qualified job ID and deduplication ID.
Task processor contract and callbacks
apps/worker/src/createProcessor.ts, apps/worker/src/tasks/*/processor.ts, apps/worker/src/tasks/*/processor.test.ts, apps/worker/test-utils/fakeJob.ts
Task processors receive a job containing data and an abort signal. Task callbacks and tests use this job shape. The delete-S3-object processor now checks unmodifiedSince even when lastModified is undefined.
Worker dispatch and startup
apps/worker/src/queues/worker.ts, apps/worker/src/createWorker.ts, apps/worker/src/index.ts, knip.json
A single worker dispatches jobs by task name, applies a two-minute timeout, and aborts its local controller after processing. Startup registers the shared queue and schedules cleanup jobs on it. Worker concurrency is one.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 5caec

After this change, content synchronization no longer runs. Full syncs and GitHub push and pull-request webhooks queue sync work on queues that no worker listens to, so content changes never sync, and no error is reported. Previously scheduled jobs, such as delayed S3 deletions, are also stranded unless they are migrated during deploy. Fix the flow routing before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5caec

Some synchronization flows still produce jobs for queues the new worker no longer consumes. Deployment or rollback can also strand previously queued work, including delayed object deletion. Existing webhook verification and repository restrictions remain in the inspected path; no new authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • High · reliability · observed: FlowProducer jobs bypass the migrated queue adapter. Webhook and sync-all flows still target individual task queues and carry unwrapped task inputs, while startup registers only the worker queue and dispatch requires task and data fields. Under the new worker topology, these flows cannot progress, preventing their synchronization and deletion transitions from running. Correct direct producers and a complete processor registry do not repair this separate producer path.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The old and new versions consume different durable queue namespaces. Without operational compatibility or migration, pending old-version jobs can be stranded after deployment, and worker-queue jobs can be stranded after rollback. Delayed S3 deletion makes this a data-lifecycle concern as well as an availability concern. Deployment sequencing was not supplied, so actual production stranding is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed execution boundary groups webhook processing, synchronization, image processing, achievements, and cleanup under one worker queue within the configured Redis prefix. Inspected synchronization effects reach the configured GitHub repository, database, and S3 bucket. Broader tenant, environment, and replica exposure was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The concrete regression is a broken state-propagation path: a webhook job reaches the centralized dispatcher, but its generated synchronization flow targets legacy queues. This affects ordinary accepted events without requiring an authorization bypass. No privilege escalation or unauthenticated arbitrary task selection was established by the inspected path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The webhook route retains its call to verifyAndReceive and its configured-repository restrictions before enqueueing pull-request and push work. The worker selects only from its explicit processor registry and rejects unknown task names. These controls counter an interpretation that queue consolidation itself exposes arbitrary processor loading.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The local concurrency setting is not evidence of hard cancellation of every side effect. The dispatcher races processing against a timeout, while attachment database writes and S3 uploads do not consume the task signal. The timeout-race pattern predates this PR, and installed runtime implementations were unavailable, so detached-work behavior is not retained as a verified new security concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use one task-qualified flow-node adapter for both direct and dependent producers, and define a reversible queue transition covering waiting, delayed, dependent, and repeatable jobs. This would make payload compatibility and cleanup continuity explicit rather than dependent on deployment overlap.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔴 Critical | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Route the flow jobs to Queues.WORKER and wrap their payloads as { task, data }.

After this PR, apps/worker/src/index.ts starts only one worker, for Queues.WORKER. The per-task queues have no worker. These flowProducer.add definitions still use queueName: Tasks.SYNC_AUTHOR, Tasks.SYNC_POST and Tasks.SYNC_COLLECTION, and they still pass the raw task input as data. As a result:

  • No worker ever processes the sync-author, sync-post or sync-collection jobs that sync-all creates.
  • If you change only the queue name, the dispatcher in apps/worker/src/queues/worker.ts reads job.data.task as undefined and throws "Could not locate the processor".

Every full sync stops working without any error.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Route webhook sync jobs through the worker queue.

When a push or pull-request webhook contains content changes, flowProducer.add(jobDef) enqueues the nodes created by constructSyncJobs. Those nodes target Tasks.SYNC_*, but the only registered worker consumes Queues.WORKER. The sync jobs can therefore remain unprocessed. Set each node's queue to Queues.WORKER and wrap its input as { task, data }, which is the payload shape that apps/worker/src/queues/worker.ts dispatches.

5-5: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial

Drain or migrate the jobs that are already in the old per-task queues before you deploy.

After this change, no worker listens on the old per-task queues. This includes delete-s3-object, which uses a delayed grace period. Jobs that are pending or delayed in those queues at deploy time will never run. For example, S3 deletions that were already scheduled will not happen, and the objects stay in S3. The old cleanup-attachments scheduler also stays in Redis.

Plan a one-time step for this deploy. Choose one of these options:

  • Re-enqueue the old jobs through createJob.
  • Keep the old workers running until their queues are empty.

After that, remove the old scheduler with removeJobScheduler.
