The first code: the I/O boundary and Apache Iceberg, without I/O of their own, for WebAssembly and native (specs 1–3, milestone 0.1).

  • lakekit-core: the Host trait, MemoryHost, one Error type.
  • lakekit-iceberg: metadata, schemas, partition specs, manifest lists and manifests read for format v1 to v3 (delete files and deletion vector references included); format v2 manifests, metadata updates and file-system commits with CommitOptions and CommitHooks (feature write); Arrow schemas (arrow); Parquet statistics (parquet-stats).
  • lakekit: re-exports, a feature each.

Started as Timelake's shared writer (timelake-format), made general. Timelake's switch: polythings/timelake branch worktree-lakekit-split.

Checks: rustfmt, clippy (native and wasm32) with -D warnings, 28 unit tests, doctests, and an interop test with iceberg-rust 0.10.1 (iceberg-rust creates and appends; lakekit reads and commits; iceberg-rust reads that and appends; lakekit reads all; statistics match iceberg-rust's writer). Every feature builds alone.

Open: #1–#6 (spec 2 and 3), publishing #7.

    • Added Apache Iceberg format v1–v3 metadata, schemas, partitions, manifests, tables, and snapshots.
    • Added optional Iceberg writing, commits, Arrow schema conversion, and Parquet statistics.
    • Added in-memory storage for testing and deterministic workflows.
  • Documentation
    • Added usage, contribution, specification, changelog, licensing, and interoperability documentation.
  • Quality
    • Added automated formatting, linting, testing, and WebAssembly build validation.

The I/O boundary (Host) and Apache Iceberg without I/O of its own, for WebAssembly and native:
metadata, schemas, partition specs, manifests and manifest lists read for format v1 to v3;
format v2 manifests, metadata updates and file-system commits written, with options and hooks;
Arrow schemas and Parquet statistics behind features. Started as Timelake's shared writer.
The tests commit to one table with lakebed and iceberg-rust in turn.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ec633

The crate manifest is valid as written, and the Arrow feature wiring works. Fixes for the issues raised in earlier review rounds have been applied. No outstanding merge-blocking risk remains in this change.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ec633

Storage access remains behind the application-provided host interface. The main concern is conditional data loss when commit hooks reuse file paths: a failed attempt can delete objects belonging to another commit. Production authorization and tenant-isolation behavior are not demonstrated here.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: If a commit hook returns an existing or concurrently shared file URI, snapshot upload replaces that object and a failed or losing attempt subsequently deletes it. Cleanup operates on all planned upload URIs rather than proven attempt-owned creations, so rollback can damage another committed snapshot's auxiliary state. Generated artifact names reduce collision risk, and Extra documents deletion after a lost race, but the public contract does not establish exclusive ownership. This is a conditional failure-containment concern involving trusted application hooks, not a demonstrated privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective storage exposure is bounded by what the supplied Host permits. A host with broad credentials could permit metadata-directed reads or hook-directed writes and deletions outside one table, but no deployed host or attacker-controlled caller establishes tenant, bucket, service, or environment exposure here.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported destructive sequence is conditional: an application hook supplies a shared URI, replacement upload occurs, then failure or a lost publication race causes deletion. The mechanism threatens auxiliary-state integrity, but the inspected evidence does not show an attacker controlling those hooks or bypassing Host authorization.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected entrypoints dispatch storage operations through Host. Conditional metadata creation protects publication ordering, but it is not URI authorization; these methods do not establish tenant or namespace ownership before dispatch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Publication recovery reads metadata back after conditional-write ambiguity and preserves uploads when ownership of the published version cannot be determined. This is an important containment control, although known-failure cleanup still assumes exclusive ownership of every upload URI.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make auxiliary files immutable and exclusively attempt-owned, use creation preconditions where appropriate, and restrict cleanup to objects whose ownership is established. Separately, document and enforce the application's authorized URI scope at the Host boundary rather than treating metadata locations as authorization.

Preserve None for invalid decimal byte lengths, existing INT32/INT64 decimal

File statistics record a bound or null count only when every row group gives it exactly (a row
group of nulls needs no bounds), so a partial one can't make a reader skip matching rows; decimals
stored as byte arrays get Iceberg's shortest bytes; a replace needs one sequence number per added
file; the current snapshot can't be removed; the next sequence number saturates.
