Fixes #8577

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added coverage verifying that bulk downloads for a selected record set contain its associated attachment and exclude attachments belonging to other records.
    • Added coverage for editing record sets, including changing their names and contents, and for nesting one record set within another.
    • Added checks for expected record set names, versions, and item membership, along with error handling when a collection object is submitted through the nested-record-set API.

Walkthrough

The PR adds tests for downloading attachments from a record set and for editing, nesting, and renaming record sets through the CRUD API.

Changes: Record-set tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record-set attachment download
specifyweb/backend/attachment_gw/tests.py
A test requests a ZIP for a record set and checks that it contains only the selected attachment with the expected bytes.
Record-set editing and nesting
specifyweb/specify/tests/test_record_sets.py
Tests update record-set names and items, create nested record sets, and check item IDs, versions, and the expected exception.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 3cd0a

The PR adds record-set tests without changing production behavior. No merge-blocking issue remains; additional coverage and existing backend defects can be handled separately.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#8577] Requests unit tests for record sets. The linked issue body gives no further detail. The whole-PR diff against the merge base adds these automated tests:

  • RecordSetEditingTests.test_edit_existing_record_set (specifyweb/specify/tests/test_record_sets.py): renames a record set and replaces one item. It asserts the new name, version increment, and item IDs.
  • RecordSetNestingTests.test_add_record_set_to_record_set: nests a record set in another. It checks that an invalid collection object insert raises RecordSetException and that inner items are unchanged.
  • RecordSetRenameTests.test_rename_record_set: renames a record set and asserts that its items are retained.
  • TestDownloadAllWithRecordSet.test_download_all_includes_record_set_attachments (specifyweb/backend/attachment_gw/tests.py): checks that the record-set-scoped attachment download returns a ZIP that contains only the record set attachment.

These tests cover record-set editing, nesting, renaming, and record-set-scoped download. No non-test production code changes appear in the diff. Test execution was not performed. The pass result depends on the tests passing when run.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff changes only specifyweb/specify/tests/test_record_sets.py and specifyweb/backend/attachment_gw/tests.py. Both files contain test code only. The record-set tests in test_record_sets.py target the linked issue directly, and their imports support those tests. The attachment test in attachment_gw/tests.py exercises download_all with a recordsetid. It therefore tests record-set behavior, so it is a reasonable record-set test and not an unrelated change. No unrelated production change appears in the diff.

Full details: Automatic Tests

Explanation

The PR adds automatic tests in both changed test modules. specifyweb/backend/attachment_gw/tests.py adds TestDownloadAllWithRecordSet.test_download_all_includes_record_set_attachments, and specifyweb/specify/tests/test_record_sets.py adds tests for editing, nesting, and renaming record sets. The test classes use the existing ApiTests framework and standard test_ methods.

Full details: Testing Instructions

Explanation

The PR description contains only “Fixes #8577”. It has no Testing section or test instructions. The reviewed range adds backend tests in specifyweb/backend/attachment_gw/tests.py and specifyweb/specify/tests/test_record_sets.py; both use ApiTests, so the affected components and backend test environment are not clearly covered.

Resolution

Add a Testing section. Include ./ve/bin/python manage.py test specifyweb.backend.attachment_gw.tests specifyweb.specify.tests.test_record_sets --verbosity=3. Describe the required backend test environment. Document the full-suite validation command ./ve/bin/python manage.py test --verbosity=3 --keepdb.

Note

Follow-up findings are listed below so you can review them separately from inline comments.

Follow-up (1)
🟠 Major (1)
Major · Scope the record set lookup to the requesting collection. · tests.py:180

specifyweb/backend/attachment_gw/tests.py:180
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Scope the record set lookup to the requesting collection.

download_all loads a Recordset by ID only. A request that names a record set from another collection passes this lookup. The handler then collects that record set's attachment locations and requests each one from the asset server. Whether foreign attachments are returned depends on the asset server's folder mapping, which this repository does not contain.

Filter the lookup by the requesting collection to close this path in the Django view.

🔒 Suggested fix
- recordset = models.Recordset.objects.get(id=recordSetId)
+ recordset = models.Recordset.objects.get(
+ id=recordSetId, collectionmemberid=request.specify_collection.id)

The same-collection path that the new test covers does not change. A foreign recordsetid now raises Recordset.DoesNotExist at this lookup, as a nonexistent ID already does.

This defect predates the PR. The PR changes only tests.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 35c466b06675); the change keeps it reachable.

Add a test for multiple attachments in one record set download.

The existing test keeps one in-set record, so a regression that drops every attachment after the first still passes. Keep that test unchanged. It still checks that other.jpg is excluded. Add a separate test that puts both collectionobjects[0] and collectionobjects[1] in a record set, then asserts both ZIP entries. The test reuses the attachments that setUp already creates, so it needs no new attachment rows.

Add a count assertion to the edit test.

The edit test compares only the set of recordid values. A duplicate row for the same record would not change that set, so the test would still pass. Adding a count assertion makes the test fail on a duplicate row. The payload contains two entries, so the expected count is 2.
