Fixes #8735

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded API coverage for creating, cloning, updating, and deleting geologic time periods, including rank validation, field round-tripping, and version increments.
    • Added a check that selecting “Chronostratigraphic Chart” displays a dialog containing the “Chrono Chart” image.

Walkthrough

The test suite adds API and database coverage for geologic time period creation, validation, cloning, editing, and deletion. It also tests opening the Chronostratigraphic Chart and displaying its image.

Changes: Chronostratigraphy test coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Period creation and validation
specifyweb/backend/businessrules/tests/test_geologictimeperiod.py
Helpers prepare API payloads and database records. Tests check creation, persisted fields, and rejection of a child with an invalid rank.
Period clone, update, and deletion
specifyweb/backend/businessrules/tests/test_geologictimeperiod.py
Tests check cloned values and distinct IDs, updates and version increments, and deletion of newly created and pre-existing periods.
Chart access test
specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/__tests__/ChronoChart.test.tsx
The test clicks the Chronostratigraphic Chart button and checks for the dialog and chart image.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to ca056

The change adds Chronostratigraphy tests without an established merge-blocking defect. Checking the chart image’s location and source would strengthen regression coverage but need not block merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "[test]: add tests for Chronostratigraphy" matches the changeset. The PR adds tests for the Chronostratigraphy features. These cover parent and rank validation, the chart opened from the clock icon, persisted and cloned fields, and editing records with a nonzero version. The title is short, specific, and names the primary change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #8735 requests tests for chronostratigraphy. The PR adds backend tests for geologic time period creation, rank validation, optional fields, cloning, deletion, and versioned edits. It also adds a ChronoChart test for opening the chart from the clock-icon button. These tests directly implement the linked issue.

Full details: Automatic Tests

Explanation

The PR adds automatic tests in both relevant test suites. The backend module adds CRUD, validation, cloning, persistence, deletion, and version-edit tests. The frontend Jest suite adds a test that opens the chart and checks the dialog and image.

Full details: Testing Instructions

Explanation

The PR does not provide testing instructions. Its description contains only Fixes #8735, but the PR changes both backend tests in specifyweb/backend/businessrules/tests/test_geologictimeperiod.py and the frontend ChronoChart test in specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/__tests__/ChronoChart.test.tsx.

Resolution

Add a ### Testing instructions section. Document the backend command, such as ./ve/bin/python manage.py test specifyweb.backend.businessrules.tests.test_geologictimeperiod, and the frontend command from specifyweb/frontend/js_src, such as npm run unitTests -- lib/components/Attachments/__tests__/ChronoChart.test.tsx. State the expected passing result and any required database or environment setup.

Nitpick Assert the persisted period fields in the add and clone tests.

68-70: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert the persisted period fields in the add and clone tests.

test_add_geologictimeperiod passes remarks, startperiod, endperiod and isbiostrat through _create_period. It does not assert them, so a change that drops these values from the saved row still passes.

test_clone_geologictimeperiod compares the clone with the original. Both objects are built from the same supplied values, so both can be None and still compare equal. Assert the literal values from the fixture after reloading the clone. Use assertIs for isbiostrat, because assertFalse also accepts None.

Suggested assertions for the add test
         self.assertEqual(period.definitionitem_id, self.era_rank.id)
         self.assertEqual(period.rankid, self.era_rank.rankid)
+
+        period.refresh_from_db()
+        self.assertEqual(period.remarks, "Test period")
+        self.assertEqual(float(period.startperiod), 251.9)
+        self.assertEqual(float(period.endperiod), 66.0)
+        self.assertTrue(period.isbiostrat)
Suggested assertions for the clone test
         self.assertEqual(clone.isbiostrat, original.isbiostrat)
+
+        clone.refresh_from_db()
+        self.assertEqual(clone.remarks, "Original remarks")

+        self.assertEqual(float(clone.endperiod), 252.0)
+        self.assertIs(clone.isbiostrat, False)

Update test_add_geologictimeperiod and test_clone_geologictimeperiod to reload
the saved period and clone from the database, then assert their remarks,
startperiod, endperiod, and isbiostrat against the fixture’s literal values; use
identity assertions for the boolean fields so None cannot pass as False.
Nitpick Cover a nonzero starting version in the edit test.

137-137: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Low value

Cover a nonzero starting version in the edit test.

test_edit_geologictimeperiod_created_in_previous_version starts from version 0 and expects version 1 after one edit. A change that always stores the version as 1 would also pass this test. An edit that starts at version 2 and expects version 3 checks the increment from a nonzero value.

Add a test alongside test_edit_geologictimeperiod_created_in_previous_version
that sets an existing period’s version to 2, edits it using version 2 as the
expected version, and verifies the updated name and version 3. Clean up the
created period using the existing test conventions.

Nitpick Scope the chart image assertion to the dialog.

24-25: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Scope the chart image assertion to the dialog.

The new test checks getByRole('dialog') and an unscoped getByRole('img', { name: 'Chrono Chart' }) separately. If the image rendered outside the dialog, the unscoped query would still find it and the test would pass. Query the image inside the dialog element to confirm the chart is displayed in the dialog.

Update the ChronoChart test to scope the “Chrono Chart” image query to the
dialog returned by getByRole('dialog'); use the dialog element as the query
container so the assertion verifies the image is displayed inside it.
Nitpick Assert the image src in the new click test.

25-25: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Assert the image src in the new click test.

The new test checks only the image's accessible name, so a wrong or missing src still passes. Add an assertion on the src attribute. The current code uses the correct asset, so this affects test coverage only.

Suggested test addition
     expect(getByRole('dialog')).toBeInTheDocument();
     expect(getByRole('img', { name: 'Chrono Chart' })).toBeInTheDocument();
+    expect(getByRole('img', { name: 'Chrono Chart' })).toHaveAttribute(
+      'src',
+      '/static/img/chronostratChart2026-06.jpg'
+    );

In the click test, extend the assertion using getByRole for the “Chrono Chart”
image to verify its src matches the expected chart asset, so the test checks
both accessibility and image content.
