Selection: Cmd/Ctrl-drag a bounding-box handle to move the selection and snap from that handle (#5482) - #5835
What was wrong. With the Selection tool there was no way to move a selection so that one of its bounding-box handles lands exactly on a point. Dragging a handle scales. Dragging from inside the selection moves it, but then the point you grabbed is what snaps, not the corner you want to line up.
What changed. Holding Cmd (macOS) or Ctrl (Windows/Linux) while you press a bounding-box handle now moves the selection instead of scaling it. The handle itself is the point that snaps, even when the press lands a few pixels off it, so it lands exactly on another object's anchor, a ruler guide and so on. While the modifier is held over a handle, the pointer is the move cursor. Without the modifier the handle scales, as before. The rest of the drag works like an ordinary move: Shift constrains, Alt leaves a copy, Escape cancels, and the whole drag is one Move undo step.
crates/tools/src/select.rs: a Cmd/Ctrl press on a handle starts the existing Move state, with the handle's document position as the snapped point. It also adds the cursor case.
No conflict with other Cmd/Ctrl uses:
Select Behind (Cmd/Ctrl-click) only happens on a press over art, after handles have been checked.
Docs: docs/ui-parity.md (row and revision) and docs/mcp.md.
Behaviour reference. This is a VectorCraft addition requested in the issue. The reference application moves an object by the point you position the pointer on before dragging, with Snap to Point on (Align objects with guides). This change extends that idea to the bounding-box handles. The reporter's attached patch was used only as a description of the behaviour. The code here is written against current main.
Testing
New test a_cmd_drag_on_a_bbox_handle_moves_the_selection_and_snaps_the_handle. It fails before this change, because the press scales. It checks that:
the cursor is the move cursor with Cmd and not without it;
the press 2 pt off the Right handle moves the selection unscaled;
the handle, not the pointer, snaps onto a ruler guide;
the drag commits;
the same press without Cmd still begins a Scale.
In the running app, driven through the control channel (ui.pointer with mods.cmd): Cmd-dragging an ellipse's top-right handle near a rectangle's bottom-left corner moved the ellipse, still 100 × 60, so that the handle sat exactly on the corner at (300, 180). The same drag without Cmd scaled it.
cargo xtask ci passes.
Not tested: the screen was locked during the app check, so I couldn't take a screenshot of the move cursor (the result was checked with ui.render and document.inspect). macOS and Windows weren't tested by hand.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Hold Cmd (macOS) or Ctrl (elsewhere) while dragging a selection bounding-box handle to move the selection instead of scaling it. The grabbed handle acts as the snapping point, and the cursor indicates move behavior. Without the modifier, dragging the handle continues to scale the selection.
Documentation
Updated guidance on modifier-based handle dragging and snapping behavior, including how this interaction differs from scaling.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Holding Cmd or Ctrl while dragging a Selection-tool bounding-box handle moves the selection and uses the handle as the snap point. Without the modifier, dragging the handle continues to scale the selection.
When Cmd or Ctrl is held over a bounding-box handle, the cursor indicates movement and pressing the handle starts a move that snaps from its document-space position. Without the modifier, the handle starts scaling. A regression test checks movement, snapping, and the unmodified scaling path. The documentation records the behavior.
Issue 1602 requests moving a shape from a specific point and snapping that point. This change moves a selection from a bounding-box handle and uses that handle as the snap point.
Issue 3734 reports that dragged objects do not snap to ruler guides. The test for this change checks snapping the handle to a guide.
Issue 3701 reports imprecise placement during object movement. This change uses the bounding-box handle as the snap point.
Issue 4312 reports snapping to the pointer instead of object bounds. This change uses the grabbed handle as the snap point, even when the pointer is offset.

The new gesture can miss the grabbed handle when using some snap modes, and the documentation overstates where and how it works. Resolve or explicitly accept those limitations before merging.

Thanks @mockydevs, this is clean, and it fits well with Select Behind and the Cmd-lent Selection tool (#4980). As the PR says, though, it's a VectorCraft addition to the core Selection tool: in the reference app a Cmd/Ctrl-drag on a bounding-box handle doesn't turn into a move. Changing what a core tool's gesture does beyond the reference app is the project owner's call, so I'm holding this for them rather than landing it. If the decision is to keep core tools at parity, the same behaviour could ship as an add-on tool or option.

Use the handle for Smart Guide alignment.
If a rotated selection’s handle approaches a Smart Guide alignment line away from an anchor, MoveSnap::snap aligns the axis-aligned bounds instead of hold. The handle can miss the line or fail to snap. Make the handle participate in alignment snapping for this gesture, including Shift-constrained moves. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Fixes #5482
What was wrong. With the Selection tool there was no way to move a selection so that one of its bounding-box handles lands exactly on a point. Dragging a handle scales. Dragging from inside the selection moves it, but then the point you grabbed is what snaps, not the corner you want to line up.

The handle itself is the point that snaps, even when the press lands a few pixels off it, so it lands exactly on another object's anchor, a ruler guide and so on.
