Description

  • I found that a window recording stopped as soon as the window went off screen, for example after a swipe to another Space or when minimizing it. I traced it to the window check, which polls the on-screen window list every 0.5s and treats a missing window as closed. I made it look at the full window list instead, so the recording only stops when the window is really closed.
  • While the window is off screen, the display behind the crop shows other content, so I hold an earlier frame of the window and keep recording audio. I first froze the last frame from the 0.5s poll, but by then it already showed the other Space. So I check visibility on every frame with CGWindowListCopyWindowInfo (about 0.14 ms per call). macOS only marks the window off screen after the minimize or Space animation ends, so I keep a frame from about a second earlier and freeze on that. I also keep holding for a second after the window comes back, to cover the restore animation.
  • One limit: the first frame or two of the swipe or minimize animation still show what is behind the window. The old code recorded those frames too, right before it stopped.

Motivation

The reporter and I agreed on this behavior in #822: stop only when the window closes, freeze while it is off screen, go back to live frames when it returns, and treat minimized windows the same way.

Testing Guide

  1. Record a window.
  2. Swipe to another desktop, wait a few seconds, and come back.
  3. Minimize the window, wait, and restore it.
  4. Stop. The recording covers the whole time and holds a frame of the window while it was away. Audio keeps going. Closing the window still stops the recording.

I tested on macOS 27.0.1 (Apple Silicon), both by running the helper directly and through the app, and checked the output frames with ffmpeg. I also checked that system audio keeps recording and that closing a minimized window still stops the recording. I added two tests to ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.test.ts, and npm test, lint and typecheck pass. Main needs a cloud sign-in before it records, so for the videos I skipped that check locally. That change is not in this PR. Testing was Claude assisted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Tracked-window recordings now hold the last captured image while the window is off screen, rather than updating the crop with off-screen content.
    • When the window returns, the held image remains for up to one second before live capture resumes.
    • Recording still ends if the tracked window is no longer available.

Walkthrough

Tracked-window recording now detects when the selected window is off screen and retains a previous cropped frame during that period and briefly after the window returns. Window validation includes off-screen windows, and finalization clears the added frame and visibility state.

Changes: Tracked-window capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect off-screen tracked windows
electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift
Window validation includes off-screen windows. The recorder checks the tracked window’s onscreen status and skips crop updates while it is off screen.
Retain cropped frames
electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift, electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.test.ts
The recorder caches recent and settled crops. It appends a prior crop while the window is off screen and holds that crop for up to one second after the window returns. Finalization clears the added state. Tests assert off-screen validation and frame retention.

Recordings can show an outdated held frame during a second window disappearance, and the visibility query may hold frames while a window is visible. Both are localized fixes to make before merging if feasible.

Explanation

The description is complete and follows the repository template. It explains the problem, motivation, bug-fix type, related issue, visual evidence, testing steps, validation results, and checklist status.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#822] requires recording to continue during macOS window-switching gestures. It must stop only when the window closes. Current code meets this requirement.

Stop condition: startWindowValidationIfNeeded now calls SCShareableContent.excludingDesktopWindows(false, onScreenWindowsOnly: false). A minimized or other-Space window stays in the list. Only a missing window reaches WINDOW_UNAVAILABLE. The added guard guard window.isOnScreen else { continue } keeps the crop unchanged while the window is away. The test file checks both lines.

Continued recording with frozen frames: the per-frame path in appendCroppedVideoFrame calls isWindowOnScreen, which uses CGWindowListCopyWindowInfo([.optionIncludingWindow], windowId) and reads kCGWindowIsOnscreen. While hidden, it appends settledCroppedPixelBuffer ?? lastCroppedPixelBuffer. Frames kept at 1 s or more intervals make the settled frame about one second older than the hide event. This matches the PR description.

Restore: after the window returns, isTrackedWindowHidden stays true until one second has passed from trackedWindowShownTime. This covers the restore animation.

State reset: finalizeCapture clears the new buffers and flags.

Audio continues because the hold path returns true and the stream keeps running.

The PR notes one limit: the first frame or two of the transition can still show content behind the window. This does not break the linked requirement. Recording continues and the stop condition is unchanged.

The unit tests are source-text checks. They confirm that the implementation lines exist. They do not run the macOS capture path. Runtime behavior rests on the author's reported manual tests, which this review could not repeat.

Explanation

The whole-PR diff from merge base 109ca3a to head 491dd6f changes two files. Both serve issue [#822].

electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift contains the following changes:

  • new frame-retention and visibility state fields
  • the per-frame hold logic
  • the onScreenWindowsOnly change and the isOnScreen guard in validation
  • the isWindowOnScreen helper
  • cleanup in finalization

electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.test.ts adds two source-text tests for the off-screen validation and the frozen-frame logic. Both match the same change.

No change in the reviewed diff falls outside the window-recording gesture behavior. The reviewed Swift diff contains no unrelated edits.

The author states that the cloud sign-in change shown in the videos is not part of this PR. The reviewed diff contains no such change.

Combine .optionIncludingWindow with an on-screen ordering option.

Apple requires .optionIncludingWindow to be combined with .optionOnScreenAboveWindow or .optionOnScreenBelowWindow for meaningful results. The current query can return no window dictionary for a visible tracked window. The ?? false fallback then enters the hidden-window path and records a held frame instead of the live frame.

A missing kCGWindowIsOnscreen key in a returned dictionary correctly means that the window is not ordered on screen. The issue is the invalid query combination, not that fallback.

Reset crop history when live capture resumes.

If the window disappears again within one second after the first resumed live crop, the recorder can hold a frame from before the previous disappearance for the full second absence. Clear recentCroppedPixelBuffer, recentCroppedFrameTime, and settledCroppedPixelBuffer when live cropping resumes, then rebuild the history from resumed live frames.
