It would be nice if until this support is there, if we add a warning when editing existing Gutenberg comments. I always forget, and then save my comment, and lose all the formatting.
Status: a block-editor comment composer exists (CommentGutenbergEditorViewController, #24063), and both creating comments (CommentCreateViewModel) and editing them (CommentEditViewModel, #24093) use it. It's behind FeatureFlag.readerGutenbergCommentComposer, which is hardcoded to false and isn't listed in Experimental Features, so no one outside a local build can try it. It hasn't changed since Feb 2025.
Next step: expose it so it can be tried.
Add FeatureFlag.readerGutenbergCommentComposer to ExperimentalFeaturesDataProvider.flags, next to newStats and newGutenberg. It already has a description, "Gutenberg Comment Composer".
Try it against a current build. The composer was written against an older GutenbergKit, and trunk is now on v0.20.0-alpha.1 (build: update GutenbergKit to v0.20.0-alpha.1 #26267). Check composing, editing, mentions and image upload, on both WordPress.com and self-hosted sites.
Based on that, decide whether to roll it out with a remote flag.
Related: as noted above in Oct 2023, editing a block-formatted comment in the plain-text editor and saving it loses the formatting. Today's plain edit path doesn't warn about this. Shipping the composer would fix it, but if the rollout stalls, a warning in the plain editor when comment.rawContent contains block markup would be worth adding.
