Adds an optional assessment mode for activities where answers need to stay secure. In learning mode, nothing changes — co-located answers in question.md still work with full client-side validation. In assessment mode, the question file has no embedded answers, and a separate answer-key.md is kept server-side.
Changes
The core change is extracting all parsing logic from server.js into lib/parse-question.js (~1200 lines) so it can be shared between the server and a new standalone grading script.
Parser tolerates missing answers. FIB and Matching accept [[blank]] without an answer token, Sort accepts items without categories, Matrix makes __Suggested Answers__ optional, and Text Input handles empty __Correct Answers__ sections. Assessment mode is auto-detected: if the parsed activity has no answer data, the server sets assessmentMode: true on the activity payload.
Client modules suppress validation in assessment mode. Each module's validateAnswers() early-returns, and updateResultsAndPost() sends empty correct values. The submit UX says "Your answers have been recorded" instead of showing correctness.
Standalone scorer (generate-score.js).lib/generate-score.js is the source; scripts/bundle-generate-score.mjs uses esbuild to produce a zero-dependency 176KB bundle at the repo root. It reads a stripped question, candidate answer, and answer key, then writes report.md and score.json. Sort and Swipe match candidate responses by item text rather than positional index to handle the parser's deterministic shuffle.
MCQ multi-select in assessment mode. Since correct-answer count can't infer isMultiSelect without markers, assessment questions use __Question Options__ with multi-select to declare it explicitly.
Examples mode Grade button. Works for all examples — assessment examples run the scorer via POST /api/examples/grade; classic examples read the auto-generated files via GET /api/examples/results. Results display in a modal with score summary, per-item breakout, and collapsible raw report.
Pre-push hook. Rebuilds the bundle, blocks the push if it's stale, then runs the 22 generate-score tests. Activated automatically via npm install → prepare script → git config core.hooksPath .githooks.
Testing
npm test — 127 tests pass (105 existing + 22 new generate-score tests covering all 7 types)
npm run examples → pick any assessment-* example → fill in answers → Submit → click Grade → verify modal shows correct scores
Pick a classic (non-assessment) example → Submit → click Grade → verify modal shows the auto-generated results
npm run build:scorer → verify generate-score.js is up to date
Copy generate-score.js to an empty directory and run it with --question, --answer, --answer-key, --report, --score to verify standalone operation
Extract parsing logic from server.js into lib/parse-question.js.
Add lib/generate-score.js and esbuild bundling to produce a standalone
generate-score.js that grades assessments from question.md, answer.md,
and answer-key.md without any dependencies.
Client modules suppress validation in assessment mode. Parser tolerates
missing answers (blanks, correct markers, categories) and supports
explicit multi-select via __Question Options__. FIB and Matching no
longer inject null choices when blank answers are absent.
Include pre-push hook that rebuilds the bundle, checks for staleness,
and runs generate-score tests. Add Grade button to examples mode for
both assessment (runs scorer) and classic (reads existing results).
Assessment examples for all 7 question types included.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The changes add Markdown parsing for assessment activities and separate answer capture from grading. A scorer uses candidate responses and answer keys to create reports and score data. Examples mode adds grading and results endpoints, a grading control, and a results modal. New example assessments and answer keys cover multiple activity types. Text-input parsing now retains validation metadata when answer text is absent.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b02f2
Assessment submissions can bypass standalone grading, and overlapping example operations can terminate the server. Establish server-side submission authority and handle grading-output failures before merging.

The title "Assessment mode | Split answer keys with standalone scorer" matches the main changes: an optional assessment mode that keeps answers in a separate answer-key.md, and a standalone generate-score.js grader. It is concise and specific, and it names the two main parts of the change. It does not mention the parser extraction, the examples Grade button, or the pre-push hook, but it does not need to cover every detail.

The tests run the checked-in bundle instead of the scorer source.
SCRIPT points to the root generate-score.js. If a developer edits lib/generate-score.js or lib/parse-question.js without npm run build:scorer, npm test checks stale code. It can pass on broken source or fail on fixed source. lib/generate-score.js calls main() at module load, so it runs directly. Point most tests at the source. Keep one smoke test that runs the bundle.

Re: the nitpick on testing the bundle vs source (test/generate-score.test.js:8) — testing the bundle is intentional. The pre-push hook rebuilds first, so the bundle is always current when tests run. Testing the bundle catches bundling issues (e.g., missing requires, esbuild transforms) that source-level tests would miss. The generate-score.js bundle is what users actually execute.

Clear all shared artifacts when selecting an example.
/api/examples/select replaces only data/question.md. After example A produces results, selecting example B leaves data/answer.md, data/report.md, and data/score.json available. The Grade action can therefore return A's report and score for classic B, or grade A's answer against B's answer key for assessment B.

When data/examples/assessment-swipe.md loads in examples mode, public/modules/swipe.js only renders item text. It creates no selectable answers, result objects, or postResults call. A user therefore cannot answer or grade this fixture, and no answer.md submission reaches the scorer.
Implement one selectable result per item and call the supplied postResults handler when the user grades the activity. Keep the separate answer key unchanged.

server.js:643-645 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Multiline explanations are cut to their first line on reload and in scoring.
server.js writes the explanation verbatim, so a newline in the textarea produces unindented continuation lines in answer.md. Both explanation parsers in lib/parse-question.js match only up to the first newline. On reload, the candidate sees only the first line. If the candidate submits again, answer.md is rewritten without the remaining text. The scorer receives the same truncated value.
Suggested fix
Indent continuation lines when writing, and read indented continuation lines when parsing. Single-line output stays byte-identical, so existing answer.md files and the single-line parse behavior are unchanged.

@coderabbitai The swipe comment is out of scope for this PR. public/modules/swipe.js has always been a placeholder with no interactivity, in classic mode and assessment mode. Building the swipe activity is a separate piece of work.
The other two outside-diff notes (clear example artifacts on select, keep multiline explanations) are being fixed.
Switching examples no longer reuses the previous answer or score, and explanation text can span indented lines.

Determine assessment mode from the server-side question.
If a client omits or clears activity.assessmentMode, /api/results enters the classic grading branch. That branch uses the client-supplied activity and writes report.md and score.json. A candidate can therefore bypass standalone grading for an answer-free assessment. Load the current question on the server and reject a submission whose mode or activity does not match it.
