fix(tooltip): Dismiss tooltip when an interactive target is activated with the keyboard - #4231
Keyboard activation now dismisses the tooltip without hiding it while the user types into a nested text field, and a pending show timer cannot reopen the tooltip after activation.
This replaces #4222, which was based on master. This branch is cut from support, with the same two commits cherry-picked.
Release Category
Components
Changes
Check the key event target for text-entry elements while retaining the interactive wrapper check.
Clear the pending show timer before dismissing on Enter or Space.
Add regression tests for nested text entry and activation before the show delay.
Validation
Before the fix, both new regression tests failed in yarn vitest run modules/react/tooltip/spec/Tooltip.spec.tsx (17 passed, 2 failed).
After the fix, the same focused suite passed (19/19).
Tooltips now close when users activate interactive elements with Enter or Space, and keyboard activation before the display delay prevents the tooltip from appearing.
Pressing Space in a text input or textarea no longer closes the tooltip, including when the text field is inside an interactive element.
Keyboard event callbacks on wrapped components continue to run when Enter closes a tooltip.
Replacing a pending tooltip display timer no longer allows the earlier timer to trigger unexpectedly.

Walkthrough
The tooltip target now hides its tooltip on Enter or Space when activated as an interactive element, except when the event target is a text-entry element. The handler clears pending show timers. Tests cover dismissal, text-entry exceptions, timer cancellation, and callback forwarding.

Summary
Keyboard dismissal and validation modules/react/tooltip/lib/useTooltip.tsx, modules/react/tooltip/spec/Tooltip.spec.tsx
The target identifies text-entry elements, hides the tooltip on Enter or Space for other interactive targets, and clears pending show timers. Tests cover these behaviors and verify that the wrapped component's onKeyDown callback runs.
The keyboard-dismissal change has no established outstanding issue that should block merging after normal checks.

storing a new timer ID, so intentTimerShow.clear() can dismiss reliably; add a
test covering mouse entry, focus, then activation before the delay expires.
- Around line 152-164: Update isTextEntryElement in useTooltip so it recognizes
events originating from descendants of an editable contenteditable element as
text entry, excluding elements whose contenteditable value is false. Preserve
the existing textarea and text-input detection so onKeyDown does not hide the
tooltip while users type in editable descendants.

Thanks! This looks great, and it looks like the behavior I was looking for from an accessibility PoV. There are some failing tests that'll need to be fixed first, and I'll ask for help with another code review from the team as well.
