Adds patch/1.31.8.1 so apisix-runtime can move to OpenResty 1.31.8.1 (nginx 1.31.8, ngx_lua 0.10.32rc7, stream_lua 0.0.20rc3, lua-resty-core 0.1.35rc2).

Changes

patch/1.31.8.1 starts as a copy of patch/1.31.1.1. Every patch now applies with no rejects and no fuzz:

  • nginx-grpc_set_header_authority.patch: rewritten. nginx 1.31.x replaced host_set with a host_value complex value: grpc_set_header Host now sets :authority, and nginx always sends :authority from it, falling back to the upstream host. The patch now handles :authority the same way as Host, so grpc_set_header ":authority" $upstream_host still sends exactly one :authority.
  • ngx_lua-enable_keepalive.patch: refreshed for upstream's proxy_bind fix (calc_hash now takes pc->local). The code it touches is removed by this patch. Default pool names already include pc->local.
  • Refreshed to remove fuzz, changed lines identical: nginx-stream_upstream_mtls, nginx-upstream_mtls, lua-resty-core-tlshandshake, ngx_lua-request_header_set, ngx_lua-shared_shdict, ngx_lua-tlshandshake, ngx_stream_lua-shared_shdict, ngx_stream_lua-xrpc.
  • patch.sh: 1.31.8.1 mapping.
  • CI: the 1.31.1.1 matrix entry now builds 1.31.8.1 (build-tools master already covers 1.31.1.1).
  • t/grpc_set_header_authority.t: covers static, variable and default :authority.

Fixes from review (patch/1.31.8.1 only)

The older patch directories keep the old code.

  • nginx-gzip.patch: zlib's output capacity now follows the gzip buffer size set per request. It used the location's gzip_buffers size, which is larger than the buffer when set_gzip() asks for a smaller one.
  • lua-resty-core-enable_keepalive.patch: set_current_peer rejects a pool_size that is not an integer or is above 2147483647. Such values could reach C as 0.
  • ngx_lua-enable_keepalive.patch: ngx_http_lua_ffi_balancer_set_current_peer rejects a pool size of 0, which has no item to save a connection in.
  • ngx_lua-ssl_session_hostname.patch, ngx_stream_lua-ssl_session_hostname.patch: session_hostname() checks the session first. There is none yet in ssl_client_hello_by_lua.
  • CI: the workflow token is read-only.
  • All runtimes: set_gzip() rejects buffer_num <= 0 and buffer_size == 0, which leave zlib nowhere to write (t/gzip.t TEST 3).

New tests run on 1.31.8.1 only: t/gzip.t TEST 2, t/balancer-keepalive.t TEST 38 and 39, t/ssl-session-hostname.t. t/balancer-keepalive.t TEST 36 and 37 combine multi with proxy_pass, which fails by design, so they no longer assert the absence of [error]; ngx_multi_upstream_module 1.4.1 now logs that error.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds OpenResty 1.31.8.1 to the CI matrix and patch script. Its patch set updates Nginx, lua-resty-core, ngx_lua, and ngx_stream_lua, including HTTP and stream integrations, TLS APIs, shared dictionaries, and socket operations.

Changes: OpenResty 1.31.8.1 support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime selection and error pages
.github/workflows/ci.yml, patch/patch.sh, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-error_page_contains_apisix.patch
The CI matrix and patch script select OpenResty 1.31.8.1 and its component versions. Nginx error pages include APISIX reporting and branding links.
Shared dictionary integration
patch/1.31.8.1/lua-resty-core-shared_shdict.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_stream_lua-shared_shdict.patch
Lua shared-dictionary bindings use shared meta Lua FFI symbols. Stream Lua delegates shared-dictionary directives and API injection to the meta Lua module.
Balancer pools and upstream TLS
patch/1.31.8.1/lua-resty-core-enable_keepalive.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_lua-enable_keepalive.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-upstream_keepalive_order.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_lua-upstream_keepalive_order.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-upstream_mtls.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-upstream_notify_cached_connection_error.patch, t/balancer-keepalive.t
Lua balancer keepalive uses named pools and configurable capacities. Nginx upstream initialization preserves peer ordering, and APISIX builds apply per-request upstream TLS settings. Tests cover keepalive ordering and pool-size validation.
Lua TLS APIs and HTTP cosocket handshakes
patch/1.31.8.1/lua-resty-core-{init_worker_coroutine,reject-in-handshake,ssl_session_hostname,tlshandshake}.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_lua-{init_worker_coroutine,reject-in-handshake,ssl_session_hostname,tlshandshake}.patch, t/ssl-session-hostname.t
Lua APIs add TLS handshake options and SSL-session hostname access. Client verification accepts a handshake-rejection option, and coroutine context handling excludes context 0x100 from the existing return branch.
HTTP request policies and integration
patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-client_max_body_size.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-proxy_request_buffering.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-real_ip.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_lua-request_header_set.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_lua-skip_filter.patch
APISIX builds use API-provided body-size and request-buffering settings. Lua header updates and filters consult APISIX state; real-IP handling exposes a setter for an address.
HTTP response and upstream controls
patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-enable_ntls.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-gzip.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-mirror.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-upstream_pass_trailers.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-grpc_set_header_authority.patch, src/ngx_http_apisix_module.c, lib/resty/apisix/response.lua, t/grpc_set_header_authority.t, t/gzip.t
APISIX request settings control gzip behavior, mirror execution, and upstream trailer processing. Nginx also handles gRPC :authority and conditional NTLS. Gzip rejects invalid buffer settings, and tests cover the response behavior.
Process roles and connection variables
patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-listen-in-privileged-agent.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-privileged_agent_process_thread.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-get_last_reopen_time.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-connection-original-dst.patch
Nginx assigns privileged-agent roles to listeners and filters sockets by process role. APISIX builds also expose the last log-reopen time and, where supported, the connection’s original destination.
Stream proxy TLS and metrics
patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-stream_metrics.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-stream_upstream_mtls.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-tcp_over_tls.patch
APISIX stream builds record proxy metrics and session reasons. Upstream TLS setup can apply APISIX settings before the handshake and can initialize TLS when session-level proxy SSL is enabled.
Stream Lua TLS handshake APIs
patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_stream_lua-expose_request_struct.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_stream_lua-reject-in-handshake.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_stream_lua-ssl_session_hostname.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_stream_lua-tlshandshake.patch, patch/1.31.8.1/lua-resty-core-tlshandshake.patch
Stream Lua adds TLS handshake FFI functions, session-hostname access, and handshake-rejection configuration. The API header conditionally exposes stream request structures to APISIX builds.
Stream Lua buffered socket I/O
patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_stream_lua-xrpc.patch
Stream Lua adds bounded line reads, reusable receive-buffer operations, pending-data checks, and buffered sends between sockets. Read and send operations support coroutine resumption and report truncated input as a distinct fault.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat: support OpenResty 1.31.8.1" matches the main objective of the PR. The PR adds a new patch directory, patch/1.31.8.1, updates patch.sh with the 1.31.8.1 mapping, and bumps the CI matrix from 1.31.1.1 to 1.31.8.1. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix. It does not cover the gzip, keepalive, or read-only token changes, but the task does not require every detail to appear in the title.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

The changed tests are real Nginx integration tests, not unit tests or mocks. They exercise gRPC upstream handling, per-request gzip output, Lua balancer keepalive, and TLS client-hello handling in both HTTP and stream subsystems. Coverage includes static, variable, and default :authority; invalid gzip buffer values; non-integer, fractional, oversized, infinite, and NaN pool_size values; FFI pool size zero; and keepalive/multi initialization order. Socket connection, send, receive, TLS handshake, Lua calls, response bodies, and targeted logs are checked. The diff shows no hidden test-order dependency, unrelated test scope, or clear changed-code error-handling or concurrency defect under the stated criteria.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security-check failure is introduced. Category 1: no added code logs or returns API keys, tokens, credentials, private keys, or authentication headers; new TLS errors contain status text and hostnames only. Category 2: no database models, migrations, or persistence writes changed. Category 3: no mutating API endpoints or permission checks changed. Category 4: no parent-child resource access paths changed. Category 5: TLS verification flags map directly to 0/1, upstream verification uses the APISIX override, and reject_in_handshake adds SSL_VERIFY_FAIL_IF_NO_PEER_CERT when enabled (patch/1.31.8.1/lua-resty-core-reject-in-handshake.patch:28-45). Category 6: default keepalive pool identity includes remote address, local bind, host, TLS state, and TLS server name, while overridden TLS requests bypass cached connections (patch/1.31.8.1/ngx_lua-enable_keepalive.patch:805-827; patch/1.31.8.1/nginx-upstream_mtls.patch:40-58). Category 7: no environment or secret-reference resolution code changed. The CI workflow also restricts contents permissions to read-only.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the balancer_keepalive capacity limit.

If an upstream sets balancer_keepalive 1, this call still creates each pool with bp->cpool_size, which defaults to 30. The directive remains accepted, but its configured limit no longer controls idle connections. With many pools, the extra connections can exhaust file descriptors. Apply the configured limit to pool creation, or explicitly retire the directive. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Assert the decompressed gzip response body.

TEST 2 exercises the per-request gzip buffer path with 512-byte buffers and a poorly compressible body. It checks only the Content-Encoding header, so a truncated or invalid gzip body can pass. Decompress the response and compare it with the generated input. No other gzip test checks the response body.

17-17: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Cover the existing-session branch in both subsystem tests.

The current cases run only during a fresh ssl_client_hello_by_lua_block callback and assert nil. Add HTTP and stream cases that complete an initial handshake, retain the TLS session ticket, then resume a second handshake and assert that session_hostname() returns test.com without an error. For TLS 1.3, wait for the post-handshake session ticket before starting the resumed handshake.

This exercises the SSL_get0_session(ssl_conn) != NULL branch. A fresh handshake cannot reach that branch.

Reject negative buffer_size values before this check.

The Lua FFI declaration passes buffer_size as size_t. A value of -1 is therefore converted to an unsigned C value before size == 0 runs. The check accepts it, and the gzip filter later uses the resulting large value for ngx_create_temp_buf. set_gzip can report success while the request fails during gzip buffer allocation. Validate opts.buffer_size <= 0 in Lua, or change the C boundary to a signed type before casting. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add a negative buffer_size case.

TEST 3 does not cover buffer_size = -1. Add {4, -1} and expect nil bad buffer_num or buffer_size. This case exercises the unsigned size_t boundary in the Lua-to-C call. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
