Adds the nginx 1.31.8 patch mapping used by OpenResty 1.31.8.x so apisix-runtime can move to OpenResty 1.31.8.1, fixes the multi connection bugs found in review, and adds the repo's first tests and CI.

Port

nginx-1.31.8.patch starts from nginx-1.31.1.patch regenerated against nginx 1.31.8, and patch.sh maps OpenResty 1.31.8.x to it.

nginx 1.31.8 changed ngx_http_upstream_process_headers(): on a header copy failure it now returns NGX_ERROR and leaves finalizing to the caller. ngx_http_multi_upstream.c treated every non-OK return as already finalized, so on 1.31.8 such a request was never answered. Both call sites now finalize it with NGX_ERROR. Older nginx never returns NGX_ERROR there, so nothing changes for them.

Fixes in the patched ngx_http_upstream_connect()

These are applied to nginx-1.31.8.patch only; the older patches keep the old code (tracked in #25).

  • Log before finalizing in all three error branches. Finalizing can free the pool that owns c->log.
  • A new connection that connects immediately (e.g. a unix socket upstream) was taken for a reused one and failed with 500. It now goes through the connect handler, which runs the TLS handshake when needed and connect_init. get_peer sets pc->cached = 0 on the new connection path so the two cases can be told apart.
  • A request that lands on a reused connection that is still connecting failed with 500. It is already queued on that connection, so it now waits and connect_init starts it once the connect finishes. If the connect fails, ngx_http_multi_upstream_next() sends it to the next upstream like the other queued requests.

Tests and CI

t/multi.t runs dubbo_pass against a stub dubbo backend:

  • a multiplexed request, and connection reuse
  • a request on a connection that is still connecting (multi 1 and two concurrent subrequests)
  • a unix socket upstream, which connects immediately
  • multi with a handler that can not multiplex, and dubbo_pass without multi

Not covered: the process_headers fix (it needs an allocation failure), and the log order in the dubbo_pass without multi branch (dubbo_pass holds a request reference there, so the client connection, which owns that log, is never closed at that point).

.github/workflows/ci.yml builds apisix-runtime on OpenResty 1.31.8.1 with this checkout (ASAN, -Werror) and runs t/, the same way apisix-nginx-module's CI does. It pins the apisix-nginx-module branch with 1.31.8.1 support until that is tagged.

Validation

  • applied ./patch.sh to OpenResty 1.31.8.1 source: no rejects, no fuzz
  • t/multi.t passes with this change under ASAN
  • with the code before this change, TEST 3 and TEST 4 fail with 500, and TEST 5 hits an ASAN heap-use-after-free in ngx_http_upstream_connect()

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added multi-upstream handling for HTTP and stream connections, including backend connection reuse, waiting-request queues, and multi-specific response processing.
    • Added compatibility with OpenResty 1.31.8 patch archives.
  • Bug Fixes
    • HTTP requests now receive an error when multi-upstream support is required but unavailable, or when a multi-enabled upstream uses an incompatible handler.
    • Improved handling of HTTP response-header processing errors in multi-upstream requests.

Walkthrough

The patch adds multi-upstream state and HTTP processing paths for OpenResty 1.31.8. It also updates version selection, adds multi-upstream behavior tests, and introduces a CI workflow.

Changes: Multi-upstream support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Multi-upstream state and connection setup
nginx-1.31.8.patch
The patch adds feature-guarded multi-upstream fields and connection setup paths. It checks handler compatibility and initializes multi handling after connection or TLS setup.
Multi-upstream request processing
nginx-1.31.8.patch
Requests can wait on a shared connection and use multi-specific read, body cleanup, downstream, retry, and finalization paths.
Response errors and connection state
ngx_http_multi_upstream.c, ngx_http_multi_upstream_module.c
Header-processing errors now finalize the affected real request. New upstream connections are marked as not cached.
Version selection and behavior tests
patch.sh, t/multi.t, .gitignore
The version script selects the OpenResty 1.31.8 patch and bundle. Tests cover new, reused, unfinished, and Unix-socket connections, plus incompatible handler configurations. The test server root is ignored.

Continuous integration

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b295c

The new CI workflow will fail at dependency installation on Ubuntu 24.04, so the patch and tests will not be validated automatically. Replace libncurses5-dev with libncurses-dev before merging. The runtime patch itself shows no confirmed defect.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two changes: adding support for the OpenResty 1.31.8 patch and fixing multi connection handling. The objectives confirm the first part: the PR adds the nginx-1.31.8.patch mapping and patch.sh support for OpenResty 1.31.8. The second part also matches the changeset, which includes the process_headers NGX_ERROR finalization fix and the pc->cached change for new connections. The title is specific and covers the main changes, though it lists two items and is slightly long at 70 characters.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security failure condition is introduced by this pull request. The changed code only updates OpenResty patch mapping, multi-upstream connection handling, request finalization, and tests. New log messages contain connection/request pointers, status codes, and fixed text; they do not log headers, tokens, credentials, plugin configuration, or request bodies. 1. Sensitive data exposure: No issues found. 2. Unencrypted database secrets: No issues found; the PR has no database models or persistence changes. 3. Authorization bypass: No issues found; the PR adds no API endpoints or permission checks. 4. Cross-resource access: No issues found; the PR adds no resource lookup or ownership logic. 5. TLS/cryptographic configuration: No issues found; the TLS changes only resume multi-upstream processing after the existing handshake. 6. Resource isolation: No issues found; connection reuse is scoped to the configured multi-upstream cache. 7. Secret reference resolution: No issues found; the PR adds no configuration secret resolution.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

E2E tests are now present, but coverage is incomplete for the changed behavior. t/multi.t provides real HTTP-to-Dubbo flows and covers reuse, queued connects, immediate connects, and handler configuration errors (tests 1–6). It does not cover malformed or failed upstream responses and retries, which are relevant to ngx_http_multi_upstream.c:454-485, stream-side multi-upstream behavior, or invalid and boundary multi configuration values. The CI workflow runs the downloaded build script and prove, but it does not directly verify patch.sh version selection or reject/fuzz-free patch application. The Lua stub also ignores the sock:send return value at t/multi.t:53.

Resolution

Add independent OpenResty 1.31.8.1 E2E coverage for patch.sh version detection, patch application with rejects and fuzz treated as failures, and module build. Add tests for malformed or unavailable upstreams, retry and finalization paths, invalid/zero/duplicate and boundary multi values, and stream multi-upstream requests. Check the Dubbo stub's sock:send result and handle write errors.

finalization closes the connection and destroys its pool.

to distinguish a newly connected peer from a reused connection; when
ngx_http_multi_upstream_get_peer() converts an immediate NGX_OK, initialize the

HTTP 500. Preserve the existing reuse path for already-connected peers.

Make response routing observable in the multiplexing test.

Both subrequests are identical, and the stub returns the same body for each one. Test 3 therefore passes even if the module delivers the two responses to the wrong subrequests. Use distinguishable requests and responses, and have the stub send the responses in reverse order. Then assert which response each subrequest receives. (github.com)

Limit token access during the build.

actions/checkout@v4 persists its token by default. Later steps download and execute build tooling, but this job does not push changes. Set persist-credentials: false and declare top-level permissions: contents: read; otherwise, token access depends on the repository’s default permission setting. (github.com)

Based on learnings, jobs that execute third-party build code should disable checkout credential persistence and declare least-privilege permissions.

Replace the unavailable Ubuntu 24.04 package.

Ubuntu 24.04 does not provide libncurses5-dev. The apt install command fails before the build and tests start. Install libncurses-dev instead. (packages.ubuntu.com)

Non-blocking: api7/apisix-nginx-module has delete-branch-on-merge enabled, so as soon as api7/apisix-nginx-module#136 merges, support-openresty-1.31.8.1 is gone and the git clone -b in build-apisix-runtime.sh fails, which turns every later CI run here red until this line is bumped. Could we switch it to the release tag once #136 is tagged, or leave a tracking issue so it doesn't get lost?
