What would the risks be if we did this as part of useThreadMessages? That it would load way too many messages? If we could carry through the cursor correctly, it might be nice to have a paginated interface that automatically advances to |

Fixes convex#193. Complete the oldest order inside listMessagesByThreadId so the continue cursor never splits a UI message. search.ts drops its own completion fetch since the query now does it. completeOrders: false opts out for callers that only want the newest rows. Supersedes the client-side loop in convex#321. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01YGMZR56ff1JhEEoMnuwa9e

thanks for the due diligence here! some notes. and if you can think of a better term than "completeOrders" that might be nice, but I can't think of one offhand

ideally they could pass these and they would only come into play if the limits were actually hit: usually these are really conservative values to avoid running out of memory.. if they are hit, we could still return a complete order by returning fewer items, but then we'd need to return a matching endCursor, which you're already handling a version of below

It also seems reasonable to request a complete order in ascending order, so let's at least fail a request that passes "asc" order and completeOrders: true

technically not minimum, since if the endCursor is set then messages are deleted, it can shrink (or if there aren't enough items to fill the page). but worth mentioning that the initial value can be higher

@ianmacartney Thanks for the review. On further testing we found edge cases this approach still misses, so I replaced it with #395, which fixes it in the React hooks instead. Closing this one. |
