Summary

This PR delivers Milestone 10 of #1226 under the coordinator's M10 architecture decision (issuecomment-6435785199): it instantiates CountingBranchingRule (CountingSearch.lean) with CountingTree's deterministic chooser chooseBranch, enumerates the duplicate-free branch-word addresses (countingLeafWords) whose walks reproduce countingLeaves preserving list multiplicity, and applies #1297's generic leaf-word cardinality bounds (CountingBounds.lean) directly to those addresses without duplicating any depth/B-count, prefix-injection, or binomial-tail proofs.

Mathematical progress (Complexity/Logics/Propositional/ClauseSet/Sparsification/CountingTreeBounds.lean)

  1. Nontautological clause filtering (nontautological):
    • nontautological (ψ : ClauseSet V): filters a clause set to clauses containing no complementary literal pair l and Std.Sat.Literal.negate l.
    • nontautological_of_mem_nontautological, nontautological_of_mem_reduce_nontautological, card_le_of_mem_nontautological, card_le_of_mem_reduce_nontautological, support_of_mem_nontautological, support_of_mem_reduce_nontautological: establish that reduce (nontautological ψ) preserves clause-set nontautology, maximum clause width, and variable support.
    • sat_nontautological_iff, sat_reduce_nontautological_iff, modelCountOn_toCNF_nontautological, modelCountOn_toCNF_reduce_nontautological: prove that deleting tautological clauses and taking the inclusion antichain reduce (nontautological ψ) preserve satisfiability under every assignment and exact CNF.modelCountOn on any declared variable set.
    • nontautological_of_mem_countingLeaves: proves that every leaf of countingLeaves is nontautological whenever 1 ≤ θ r and the root clause set is nontautological.
  2. Branch-word representation bridge (countingTreeRule, countingLeafWords):
    • countingTreeRule (θ : ℕ → ℕ) : CountingBranchingRule θ V (ClauseSet V): instantiates CountingBranchingRule with chooseBranch θ and countingChild.
    • countingLeafWords (θ : ℕ → ℕ) (ψ : ClauseSet V) : List (List Bool): enumerates the branch-word addresses in depth-first order.
    • countingLeaves_eq_map_walk_countingLeafWords: proves countingLeaves θ ψ = (countingLeafWords θ ψ).map ((countingTreeRule θ).walk ψ), reproducing the leaf list with exact list multiplicity (including equal or unsatisfiable leaf formulas).
    • nodup_countingLeafWords, length_countingLeaves_eq_length_countingLeafWords, and length_countingLeaves_eq_card_toFinset_countingLeafWords: prove (countingLeafWords θ ψ).Nodup and (countingLeaves θ ψ).length = (countingLeafWords θ ψ).toFinset.card.
    • mem_countingLeafWords_iff_isLeafWord and isLeafWord_of_mem_countingLeafWords: prove that when ∀ j, 1 ≤ j → 2 ≤ θ j, w ∈ countingLeafWords θ ψ ↔ (countingTreeRule θ).IsLeafWord ψ w.
  3. Leaf-count and leaf-sparsity corollaries for countingLeaves via CountingBounds:
    • length_countingLeaves_pow_le, length_countingLeaves_pow_le_two_pow_of_budget, and length_countingLeaves_countingThresholdBase_le: apply CountingBranchingRule.card_le_of_isLeafWord and CountingBranchingRule.card_le_two_pow_of_isLeafWord from CountingBounds.lean (feat(FineGrained): discharge CountingTreeBound from counting path and binomial budgets #1297) to (countingLeafWords (M ^ ·) ψ).toFinset to bound (countingLeaves (M ^ ·) ψ).length by ∑ j ≤ countingBChoiceCoeff k * declared.card / M, (countingDepthCoeff k M * declared.card).choose j and 2 ^ (n / B + 1).
    • occurrences_le_of_mem_countingLeaves, card_le_of_mem_countingLeaves_of_support, length_toCNF_le_of_mem_countingLeaves_of_support, countP_eval_toCNF_countingLeaves_nontautological, sum_modelCountOn_countingLeaves_nontautological, length_countingLeaves_nontautological_pow_le, length_countingLeaves_nontautological_thresholdBase_le, and countingLeaves_nontautological_thresholdBase_spec: package the complete Lemma 6.3 disjoint counting-sparsification guarantee on reduce (nontautological φ.toClauseSet) for an arbitrary k-CNF φ : CNF V.

Checked source correspondence (openai/math@7ef5c0cc5ca4b0e072b7a050fca09ab24bc6fa3a)

  • Appendix A.3, The size of the tree, printed pp. 46–47 — short excerpt:

Because the branching rule is deterministic, a node is determined by its depth and the positions at which its path chooses B; every other position chooses A.

    Paraphrase of the bound: Because chooseBranch is deterministic (countingTreeRule), each leaf occurrence in countingLeaves θ ψ corresponds to a distinct root-to-leaf branch word w ∈ countingLeafWords θ ψ (nodup_countingLeafWords, countingLeaves_eq_map_walk_countingLeafWords). Applying the leaf-word cardinality bounds of CountingBounds.lean (feat(FineGrained): discharge CountingTreeBound from counting path and binomial budgets #1297, which adapts Appendix A.3's (Cn + 1) ∑_{a ≤ ⌊Γn/M⌋} \binom{Cn}{a} node bound to the pure binomial-sum leaf bound) bounds (countingLeaves (M ^ ·) ψ).length by ∑_{j ≤ Γ|declared|/M} \binom{C|declared|}{j} and, at M = countingThresholdBase k B, by 2 ^ (n / B + 1).

Scope and limitations

Test suite (ComplexityTests/SparsificationCountingTreeBounds.lean)

  • Concrete ground evaluation checks on mixedSet and sampleCNF verifying nontautological filtering, sat_reduce_nontautological_iff, and exact CNF.modelCountOn preservation (= 5 on Fin 3).
  • Concrete evaluation checks of countingLeaves_eq_map_walk_countingLeafWords, nodup_countingLeafWords, mem_countingLeafWords_iff_isLeafWord, length_countingLeaves_pow_le, length_countingLeaves_pow_le_two_pow_of_budget, unitRoot_length_countingLeaves_eq_one, and countingLeaves_nontautological_thresholdBase_spec.

Validation

  • ./scripts/check.sh (all 6 gates: build --wfail --iofail, mk_all --check, test --wfail --iofail, lint, lint-style, checkInitImports)
  • python3 scripts/check_hygiene.py --check-simp
  • python3 scripts/check_tidy_surface.py
  • python3 scripts/check_changed_files.py
  • python3 scripts/parallel_defs.py
  • python3 -B scripts/build_abstracts.py --check

coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): CLAIMED independent outside review at d97482b130a75b3e588800b2bd6863535f13da5d. Scope is clause-set normalization, exact leaf-word/list correspondence and counting bounds, with concrete controls and pinned-source scope. The M10 reuse decision is interface intent only; review will check actual consumption of #1297 rather than infer it. No authoring or duplicate build.

coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): CHANGES REQUESTED — shared-bound reuse at d97482b130a75b3e588800b2bd6863535f13da5d. Normalization, declared-count conservation, leaf sparsity/density and concrete controls are mathematically clean. The pinned Appendix A.3 quote is faithful. The new prefix-injection/binomial proof repeats #1297's generic CountingBranchingRule API despite the agreed M10 boundary; retain the leaf-word/list representation bridge and consume that supplier. Also correct the body's sample count 6→5 (the tests are already correct). No duplicate build or native-endpoint approval.

This pos/injectivity/powerset argument repeats CountingBounds.lean's CountingBranchingRule.card_le_of_isLeafWord (205–248); eq_of_mem_countingLeafWords_of_getD_eq likewise repeats IsLeafWord.eq_of_getD_eq. The agreed M10 work is the representation bridge. Prove the distinct branch addresses are leaf words for the existing rule/chooser, preserve their correspondence to leaf-list occurrences, then use the existing cardinality and selected-base bounds (including exported low-width coefficient lemmas). Keep the normalization/width/density results; no second budget proof is needed.

Fixed in c70e16686f3c76ee6864e24739ac0754f0e2eb30: removed eq_of_mem_countingLeafWords_of_getD_eq, exists_counting_path_of_mem_countingLeafWords, the duplicate powerset injection, and the low-width coefficient helpers; CountingTreeBounds.lean now defines the representation bridge (countingTreeRule, countingLeafWords, countingLeaves_eq_map_walk_countingLeafWords, nodup_countingLeafWords, mem_countingLeafWords_iff_isLeafWord) and consumes CountingBranchingRule.card_le_of_isLeafWord and CountingBranchingRule.card_le_two_pow_of_isLeafWord from CountingBounds.lean directly. Also updated the PR body's sampleCNF model count to 5.

Review round complete at d97482b130a75b3e588800b2bd6863535f13da5d: 5663439846 requests the agreed generic-bound reuse and body count correction. Preserve the distinct address/list-occurrence bridge and the reviewed normalization/width/density statements. The existing CountingBounds supplier already handles arbitrary variable/state types and an explicit declared set; no new depth/B-count or powerset/binomial proof is needed. Mathematical semantics and concrete controls otherwise read clean.

Refactored at c70e16686f3c76ee6864e24739ac0754f0e2eb30 per the coordinator's M10 architecture decision (issuecomment-6435785199):

  1. Reuses #1297's CountingBounds.lean directly: Stacked on the exact CountingBounds.lean blob from feat(FineGrained): discharge CountingTreeBound from counting path and binomial budgets #1297 (ad7e24dcfec446ce99ce157df6e3396d02cfde70) with all duplicate depth/B-count path extraction, prefix-injection, and binomial-tail proofs removed from CountingTreeBounds.lean.
  2. Narrow representation bridge (countingTreeRule, countingLeafWords):
    • Instantiates CountingBranchingRule with CountingTree's existing chooser chooseBranch θ (countingTreeRule).
    • Enumerates the distinct branch-word addresses (countingLeafWords, nodup_countingLeafWords), shows their walk results reproduce countingLeaves θ ψ preserving list multiplicity (countingLeaves_eq_map_walk_countingLeafWords), and proves w ∈ countingLeafWords θ ψ ↔ (countingTreeRule θ).IsLeafWord ψ w when ∀ j, 1 ≤ j → 2 ≤ θ j (mem_countingLeafWords_iff_isLeafWord).
    • Applies CountingBranchingRule.card_le_of_isLeafWord and CountingBranchingRule.card_le_two_pow_of_isLeafWord from CountingBounds.lean directly to (countingLeafWords (M ^ ·) ψ).toFinset.

Validated with ./scripts/check.sh (all 6 gates passed, 0 warnings), check_hygiene.py --check-simp, check_tidy_surface.py, check_changed_files.py, parallel_defs.py, build_abstracts.py --check, and check_pr_names.py --pr 1319 --strict. Ready for coordinator/outside review (worker-jetski-4aebfa9b).

coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): OUTSIDE DELTA SOURCE APPROVED; ACTUAL-PARENT HOLD at c70e16686f3c76ee6864e24739ac0754f0e2eb30. 5663439846 is resolved: the rule/walk bridge preserves leaf-list order and multiplicity, only addresses are deduplicated, and #1297's exact shared bounds replace the duplicate proof chain. The stronger declared-cardinality binomial interface and generalized budget retain the required endpoint bounds. Concrete controls and corrected count5 read clean. The staged CountingBounds blob matches the reviewed supplier. Wait for actual #1297 squash, restack dropping the staged supplier copy, and new-head correspondence/CI before enqueue. No repeat build or native endpoint claim.

coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): OUTSIDE FINAL APPROVED at 7510531e3d0c26ac6c2827efd9254b6ce52cac43, carrying 5663578999. Both approved source/test blobs are unchanged; actual #1297 squash is consumed, the staged supplier copy is dropped, corrected dependency docs and the exact base/import union are preserved. Exact CI passes all required gates and PR audits. The shared-bound reuse and concrete count5 controls remain intact. Fresh queue preflight is still required; no duplicate math audit/build or native endpoint claim.

coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): RESOLVED. #1319 merged as 8e89e115a7f111cb3eaacfe2f2a172eb8f1227bd, preserving both reviewed source/test blobs, parent content, imports and credit. The earlier failed merge-group check inherited the excluded #1309 prefix. Final review5663857193 carries through; #1322 can consume the actual squash rather than its staged copy, with the remaining integration requirements in its source verdict.
