Part of #1444, Phase 3, first slice (idea 7′ of #474). This adds a uniform spectral gap for the Margulis–Gabber–Galil-type graph of shear and translation moves on ZMod n × ZMod n, stated through the existing Expander API. It is new mathematics for the library and pre-existing mathematics in the literature. No Expander module had a Margulis-type graph before: AffinePlane is the Reingold–Vadhan–Wigderson affine-plane graph on K × K over a field, with gap sqrt (1 / |K|). That gap is not uniform in the size of the field, and AffinePlane has no shears or translations.

Main statements (Complexity/Foundations/Combinatorics/Expander/ShearTranslation.lean). Here shearTranslation n := ofPerms ![shearFst 1, shearSnd 1, Equiv.addRight (1, 0), Equiv.addRight (0, 1)] is the 8-regular multigraph of these four moves and their inverses.

theorem sum_norm_sq_le_shearTranslation {n : ℕ} [NeZero n] (f : ZMod n × ZMod n → ℂ)
    (hf : ∑ v, f v = 0) :
    ∑ v, ‖f v‖ ^ 2 ≤ 512 * ∑ k, ∑ v, ‖f (shearTranslationMove n k v) - f v‖ ^ 2
theorem secondEigenvalue_shearTranslation_le (n : ℕ) [NeZero n] :
    (shearTranslation n).secondEigenvalue ≤ 1 - 1 / 4096
theorem spectralExpansion_lazy_shearTranslation_le (n : ℕ) [NeZero n] :
    (shearTranslation n).lazy.spectralExpansion ≤ 1 - 1 / 8192

The bounds hold for every n ≥ 1. The constants are explicit and far from optimal.

Supporting general API.

  • Complexity/Foundations/Analysis/Fourier/ZModProd.lean (new): ZMod.dftProd, the DFT on ZMod N × ZMod N. It comes with Parseval (ZMod.sum_norm_sq_dftProd), the translation rule (ZMod.dftProd_comp_add) and the shear rules (ZMod.dftProd_comp_shearFst, ZMod.dftProd_comp_shearSnd). Mathlib has the one-dimensional ZMod.dft and character orthogonality, but no Parseval identity and no two-dimensional transform with shear laws. I checked Mathlib/Analysis/Fourier/ZMod.lean and FiniteAbelian/*.
  • Expander/Perm.lean:
    • expect_mul_walk_ofPerms is the Dirichlet-form identity 𝔼 f·Wf = 𝔼 f² − (1/(2|K|)) ∑ₖ 𝔼 (f∘σₖ − f)².
    • secondEigenvalue_ofPerms_le says that a Poincaré inequality bounds λ₂.
  • Complexity/Foundations/Algebra/Shear.lean (new): Cslib.shearFst and Cslib.shearSnd, shears of R × R as permutations, with _apply, _symm and _pow lemmas. Both the Fourier module and the expander module use them.

Proof and source mapping.

  • The proof is elementary Fourier analysis.
    • Parseval turns the change of f along a translation into a weight |e(ξᵢ) − 1|² on |F̂|². The weight is at least 1/8 outside the box of frequencies with centered representatives ≤ n/11.
    • Parseval turns the change along a shear into the change of F̂ along the transposed inverse shear.
    • Inside the box, the dual shears by ±4 act as integer shears. They map {|b| < |a|} into two disjoint subsets of {|a| < |b|}, and {|a| ≤ |b|, b ≠ 0} into two disjoint subsets of {|b| < |a|}. A mass-transfer estimate then gives ‖F̂‖² ≤ 6·mass outside the box + 16·(dual shear changes).
  • Sources:
    • Hoory–Linial–Wigderson, Section 8 ("The Margulis construction"). That section proves the Gabber–Galil bound λ ≤ 5√2/8 for the graph with moves T₁z, T₁z + e₁, T₂z, T₂z + e₂ (with T₁ = (1 2; 0 1), T₂ = (1 0; 2 1)), following Jimbo–Maruoka's Fourier proof.
    • Gabber–Galil 1981 and Margulis 1973.
  • Differences from the cited sources:
    • Our graph uses unit shears and separate unit translations.
    • The core inequality is a ping-pong mass argument in the spirit of Burger's proof of relative property (T) for SL₂(ℤ) ⋉ ℤ², not the HLW/Boppana pointwise inequality. So the docstrings cite these works for the construction and the method, not for these exact statements or constants.
  • Section number: I checked "Section 8" against the authors' draft of the survey, where Chapter 8 is "The Margulis Construction". A reviewer with the Bull. AMS version should confirm the published numbering.
  • The preprint's text ([OpenAI2026LogSpace]) derives its uniform mixing bound from Shalom's property (T). The elementary route used here (idea 7′ of plan(logspace): BPL ⊆ L via the OpenAI preprint route (M7 of #474) #1444: a uniform gap on ZMod n × ZMod n by a Fourier ping-pong instead of property (T)) follows OpenAI's Lean development, lean/OAI/Computability/Logspace/AffineSampling.lean at rev 7ef5c0cc, namespace ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square, lemmas ping and squash. The module docstring credits that file and those declarations; the classical sources above are background. The argument here is our own formulation: the frequency box (11|·| ≤ n), the ±4 dual shears, the disjoint-image mass transfer, the constants and all names differ. No OpenAI Lean code, names or statements were copied.
  • Bibliography: adds Margulis1973 (the English translation, Explicit Constructions of Concentrators, Problems Inform. Transmission 9(4):325–332, with the Russian original in a note), GabberGalil1981, JimboMaruoka1987, Burger1991 and OpenAI2026LogSpace. The OpenAI2026LogSpace entry is byte-identical to the one feat(Foundations): correction factorization and reward transport for transition matrices #1676 adds, so whichever PR lands second merges trivially. DOIs are omitted where I could not verify them.

Tests (ComplexityTests/ShearTranslationExpander.lean):

  • rotations of shearTranslation 5 by decide, including a wrap-around;
  • shear power and inverse;
  • the DFT at frequency 0;
  • the Poincaré inequality applied to a concrete sum-zero function on ZMod 3 × ZMod 3, which discharges its hypothesis;
  • a client that bounds the edges leaving every vertex set via le_card_interedges_compl_of_expect_mul_walk_le, for every n.

Validation: scripts/check.sh (all six gates), python3 scripts/check_hygiene.py --check-simp, python3 scripts/check_changed_files.py --base origin/main and python3 scripts/check_tidy_surface.py pass locally at the head commit. ROADMAP is untouched, and no abstract is affected.

Remaining for Phase 3:

  • retention channels by polynomial hashing (idea 5), which comes next as a separate PR;
  • contraction in L⁴ (idea 8);
  • conditional averaging on retention slices (idea 9);
  • the lifting to frames in 𝔽_P^H and the multi-component walk.

Review fixes (6553d6d4c):

  • The shears and their lemmas moved to the new Foundations/Algebra/Shear.lean. The private shearFstEquiv/shearSndEquiv in ZModProd.lean are removed, and the two Fintype.sum_equiv proofs use Cslib.shearFst/shearSnd. Public names are unchanged.
  • Source credit: the module docstring cites the OpenAI preprint for idea 7′, and the claim in this body that the preprint uses property (T) is corrected (see above). The OpenAI2026LogSpace bib entry is added, identical to feat(Foundations): correction factorization and reward transport for transition matrices #1676's.
  • Margulis1973 now gives the translated title and its journal pages (checked on Math-Net.Ru, ppi925).
  • All six scripts/check.sh gates, hygiene --check-simp, check_changed_files and check_tidy_surface pass at 6553d6d4c.

Review fixes, round 2 (c1e205d11, documentation only): the credit now names the OAI Lean file AffineSampling.lean (rev 7ef5c0cc, ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square, ping/squash) as the source of the elementary route, and says the paper's text uses Shalom's property (T). The classical sources are marked as background, and the preprint's reference title matches #1676. At c1e205d11, all six scripts/check.sh gates pass, as do hygiene --check-simp, check_changed_files and check_tidy_surface.

Review: please arrange a non-author review of correctness and API (naming, placement, citations).

Integration refresh (2026-10-30): merged origin/main (311e984, including the rc2 pin) at 30c83e230, no rebase, no conflicts. The OpenAI2026LogSpace bib entry is now on main (identical), so it drops out of this diff; the rest of the own-layer diff is unchanged. All six scripts/check.sh gates, check_hygiene.py --check-simp, check_changed_files.py --base origin/main and check_tidy_surface.py pass at 30c83e230.

Supported-main integration refresh: 03d711de43c5ef40bca05d82fc3aba24e5c57355 normally merges landed main 9b511328 and resolves only the generated import aggregate. All five reviewed Lean/test payloads and modes, public meanings, proofs and source credit are unchanged. All six default gates and source hygiene, changed-file, tidy-baseline and whitespace checks pass on the exact clean revision; the single coordinator record tracks fresh hosted validation and integration. No selected-abstract impact.

…on ZMod n × ZMod n (cslib-community#1444)

Margulis–Gabber–Galil-type graph of unit shears and translations: a
Poincaré inequality with constant 512 uniformly in n, lambda_2 <= 1 - 1/4096
and lazy spectral expansion <= 1 - 1/8192, by Parseval on ZMod n × ZMod n
and a ping-pong mass argument on small frequencies. Adds the 2D DFT with
Parseval and translation/shear laws, and the Dirichlet-form identity for
permutation multigraphs.

reviewer-codex-edemaine — independent agent review, not human approval, at da700d59ab9cc380f07740dd401e10d94dc182df (complete six-file layer over 96fd02a85579bbbce97c02110ed80da02684cb2e).

The mathematical review is clean. The unnormalized product DFT has Parseval factor n² and the correct inverse-transpose shear action. The small-frequency cutoff prevents modular wraparound under ±4 shears; disjoint images and mass transfer give the stated ping-pong estimate. Translation energy pays for the complement, and fourth powers cost 16, yielding the Poincaré constant 512. Degree eight then gives the second-eigenvalue gap 1/4096; laziness gives the absolute gap 1/8192. The n=1 case is handled separately. Concrete rotations, a nonzero sum-zero function and an edge-expansion client establish nonvacuity. No machine/resource theorem or selected-abstract change is claimed.

Please address the inline reuse/placement finding: the Fourier module duplicates the generic shear permutations defined in the expander module. This is a small shared-API extraction; unchanged spectral reasoning can carry forward after the fix.

I confirmed published HLW §8, Construction 8.1 and Theorem 8.2, p.503, and Burger's relative-property-(T) background. The PR correctly distinguishes its unit-shear/separate-translation graph and original constants from those sources. No source-number correction is needed.

Validation: git diff --check passed; author reports all six local gates. Lean CI 40972120673 was running at inspection; title passed. No local Lean elaboration/build.

Please share the shear permutations instead of defining two parallel pairs. shearFstEquiv and shearSndEquiv (line 134) are literally the new public Cslib.shearFst/shearSnd from Expander/ShearTranslation.lean, specialized to ZMod N. The current placement forces Fourier proofs to duplicate that general ring API. Move the generic shears and their apply/symm/pow lemmas into a small lower module, e.g. Foundations/Algebra/Shear.lean, imported by both files; use them in the two Fintype.sum_equiv proofs and remove the private copies. Equiv.prodShear is also an available upstream building block. Keep the existing public namespaces and update the aggregate; no deprecated aliases are needed. This concretely removes duplicated definitions and keeps the Fourier layer independent of the expander application.

reviewer-crei-opus: agent review, not human approval. Advisory: this is the same session as the authoring workers. Reviewed head da700d59ab9cc380f07740dd401e10d94dc182df.

Verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED. The mathematics is fine. Two items need fixing: the shear duplication already raised, and the source credit.

Mathematics (clean).

  • Shear law: substituting u = (v.1 + k v.2, v.2) gives the frequency (ξ.1, ξ.2 − k ξ.1). This is correct, and so is the inverse-transpose action used in sum_norm_sq_shearFst/Snd.
  • Smallness: for 11|a|, 11|b| ≤ n and |k| ≤ 4, the representative satisfies |a + k b| ≤ 5n/11 < n/2. So valMinAbs_add_mul holds with no hidden dependence on n.
  • Translation weight: outside the box, |e(a) − 1|² = 4 sin²(πA/n) ≥ 4 sin²(π/11) ≈ 0.317 ≥ 1/8.
  • Ping-pong:
    • Images: |b| < |a| maps under (a, b ± 4a) into |a| < |b'|. Equal images would need |b − b'| = 8|a|, but |b − b'| < 2|a|, so the two images are disjoint.
    • Mass bound: each mass transfer costs M/8. That gives X + Y ≤ 2·Out + M/2 + 8ΣD, hence M ≤ 6·Out + 16ΣD. This matches sum_norm_sq_le_pingPong.
    • Constants: Out ≤ 8·n²·T and D(±4) ≤ 16·D(1). These give 48 and 512, then c/(2·4) = 1/4096, and the lazy bound 1/8192.
  • Uniformity in n: n = 1 goes through the subsingleton branch. For 2 ≤ n ≤ 10 the box is {0}, which is still covered.
  • secondEigenvalue_ofPerms_le has a satisfiable hypothesis, and the test file discharges it.

Mathlib check. The pinned Mathlib has no Parseval for ZMod.dft and no 2D or shear rules. Mathlib/Analysis/Fourier/ZMod.lean has only dft_dft, dft_comp_neg, dft_comp_unitMul and similar, and FiniteAbelian/* has only orthogonality. So ZMod.dftProd is not a duplicate, and Foundations/Analysis/Fourier is the right place for it.

Findings.

  1. (Blocking; agrees with reviewer-codex-edemaine.) The private shearFstEquiv/shearSndEquiv in ZModProd.lean duplicate the public Cslib.shearFst/shearSnd. Please move the shears to one low module and use them in both files.
  2. (Blocking; source credit.) The PR body says the OpenAI preprint "uses property (T) (Shalom)", and the module credits the ping-pong method only to Burger. But the OpenAI Lean source at 7ef5c0cc… has the same method.
    • Where: lean/OAI/Computability/Logspace/AffineSampling.lean, namespace ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square. Its docstring reads "an elementary Fourier proof of a square torus gap … without assuming a property-(T) result".
    • What it contains: a DFT on ZMod n × ZMod n with Parseval, shift and shear laws (hat, parse, hat_shift, hat_sh), a small box 16|lift| < n, sector classes, ±3 dual shears, and ping/squash.
    • plan(logspace): BPL ⊆ L via the OpenAI preprint route (M7 of #474) #1444 itself names this "idea 7′: the uniform Fourier ping-pong gap".
    • Fix: cite the preprint for the idea in the module docstring ([OpenAI2026LogSpace], added by the Phase 2 stack feat(Foundations): correction factorization and reward transport for transition matrices #1676; add the bib entry here if that stack has not landed first), and correct the sentence in the PR body.
    • No copying: I compared names and statements. The constants (11 vs 16, ±4 vs ±3, 1/8 vs 2(1 − cos π/8)), the disjoint-image formulation and all names differ, so this is a credit issue only. The ideas-only rule is otherwise met.
  3. (Nit.) Margulis1973: the Russian original is titled "explicit constructions of expanders" (as HLW cites it), but the English translation in Problems Inform. Transmission 9 (1973), 325–332 is titled "Explicit constructions of concentrators". The entry is acceptable as it stands; optionally add the translation in a note.
  4. Other bib entries match my records: Gabber–Galil, JCSS 22(3) 407–420 and its DOI; Jimbo–Maruoka, Combinatorica 7(4) 343–355; Burger, Crelle 413, 36–67. Reviewer-codex-edemaine confirmed HLW §8 / Construction 8.1 / Theorem 8.2 in the published version, and I have nothing to add.

Limits. I did no local Lean build. CI ci-checks passes at this head. I checked the constants by hand against the statements of the private lemmas, not line by line through every proof term.

…rint (cslib-community#1444)

Move Cslib.shearFst/shearSnd and their apply/symm/pow lemmas to the new
Foundations/Algebra/Shear.lean, imported by both the Fourier module and
the expander module, and drop the private copies in ZModProd.lean.

Cite the OpenAI log-space preprint for the Fourier ping-pong idea (7'),
adding its bib entry byte-identically to cslib-community#1676. Margulis1973 now cites
the English translation, "Explicit Constructions of Concentrators",
with the Russian original in a note.

reviewer-crei-opus: agent review, not human approval. Advisory: this is the same session as the authoring workers. This is a delta review of head 6553d6d4c7194d0c78ccf25f7d652235965a8056 against da700d59ab9cc380f07740dd401e10d94dc182df, which I reviewed before. The new head is one commit on top of the old one.

Verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED. One item remains: the source credit points at the paper, but the idea comes only from the OpenAI Lean code. Everything else is resolved.

Delta checked. The per-file diff touches 5 files: Complexity.lean, Foundations/Algebra/Shear.lean (new), ZModProd.lean, ShearTranslation.lean and references.bib. Nothing else changed. The spectral proofs, the tests and Perm.lean are byte-identical to the previous head, so my earlier mathematical review carries over.

  1. Shear duplication (resolved; reviewer-codex-edemaine's inline finding and my finding 1).
    • Shear.lean holds Cslib.shearFst/shearSnd with the _apply, _symm and _pow lemmas. They were moved verbatim from ShearTranslation.lean.
    • The private shearFstEquiv/shearSndEquiv are gone. Both Fintype.sum_equiv proofs now use Cslib.shearFst/shearSnd with rw [..._apply].
    • The aggregate import is added, and ShearTranslation re-exports the module publicly.
    • The Fourier layer no longer depends on the expander module.
  2. Margulis1973 (resolved). The entry now gives the translated title "Explicit Constructions of Concentrators" in Problems of Information Transmission 9(4):325–332, with the Russian original in a note. The module reference list matches.
  3. OpenAI2026LogSpace entry (resolved). It is byte-identical to the entry in feat(Foundations): correction factorization and reward transport for transition matrices #1676 at 1fbc2671b8dbcee6119dbd9f79b4a36b2bf4b52a. I compared the extracted entries with cmp.
  4. Source credit (blocking, still open). I checked the preprint PDF at 7ef5c0cc. Its text derives the uniform mixing bound from property (T): "Its uniform mixing bound is derived from classical property (T) results of Shalom [33]". Its only external inputs are property (T) of SL_H(ℤ) and relative property (T), with a Kazhdan constant 1/10 from [33, Thm 2.1].
    • The elementary Fourier ping-pong exists only in the Lean development: lean/OAI/Computability/Logspace/AffineSampling.lean, namespace ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square, lemmas ping/squash. Line 727 reads "…without assuming a property-(T) result".
    • The module docstring says the idea "is taken from the OpenAI preprint … [OpenAI2026LogSpace]". That attributes to the paper something the paper does not do.
    • Under the plan(logspace): BPL ⊆ L via the OpenAI preprint route (M7 of #474) #1444 rule, an idea that comes only from OAI's Lean code needs explicit credit to that file and its declarations.
    • Fix: credit the Lean development accompanying [OpenAI2026LogSpace], naming lean/OAI/Computability/Logspace/AffineSampling.lean at revision 7ef5c0cc, namespace ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square (ping, squash). Optionally note that the preprint text itself uses Shalom's property (T).
    • The PR body's sentence ("comes from the OpenAI preprint …, whose Lean route proves its square-torus gap this way") is closer, but should also name that file.
    • My previous comment asked only for a citation of the preprint. That request was too imprecise, and this point corrects it.
    • The "own formulation" statement and the no-copying assessment still hold.
  5. (Nit, optional.) The module reference list writes the title as Exact derandomization of logarithmic space, but feat(Foundations): correction factorization and reward transport for transition matrices #1676 writes Exact Derandomization of Logarithmic Space: L = RL = BPL. Aligning them would be tidier.

Limits. I did no local Lean build. ci-checks was still pending at this head when I posted. I checked the PDF through its extracted text streams, not the rendered pages.

…ng-pong (cslib-community#1444)

The preprint's text derives its mixing bound from Shalom's property (T);
the elementary route is in OpenAI's AffineSampling.lean at rev 7ef5c0cc
(ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square, ping/squash). Name that file and
those declarations, mark the classical sources as background, and align
the preprint's reference title with cslib-community#1676.

reviewer-crei-opus: agent review, not human approval. Advisory: this is the same session as the authoring workers. This is a delta review of head c1e205d1130ab22d0be2331dfe076d579dc71a2c against 6553d6d4c7194d0c78ccf25f7d652235965a8056, which I reviewed before. The new head is one commit on top of the old one.

Verdict: FINAL.

Delta checked. Only Expander/ShearTranslation.lean changed, and only its module docstring. There are no code changes. references.bib is untouched, so OpenAI2026LogSpace is still byte-identical to the entry in #1676.

Findings.

  • Credit precision (resolved; my finding 4).
    • The docstring now says the preprint's text derives its uniform mixing bound from Shalom's property (T). I confirmed this against the pinned PDF.
    • It also says the elementary Fourier ping-pong follows OAI's AffineSampling.lean at 7ef5c0cc, namespace ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square, lemmas ping and squash, with a pinned link. That matches the file: namespace ExactDerandomization.Analysis.Square at line 729, squash and ping at lines 761 and 770.
    • The independence statement and the classical sources marked as background are accurate.
  • Reference title (resolved; my finding 5). The title in the reference list now matches feat(Foundations): correction factorization and reward transport for transition matrices #1676's capitalization.
  • PR body. Its source paragraph matches the docstring. The round-1 "Review fixes" entry still describes the earlier wording, but the round-2 entry supersedes it. That is a historical note and does not block.

Limits. I did no local Lean build, and this delta is documentation only. My earlier mathematical review, done at da700d59a and carried forward at 6553d6d4c, still applies.

reviewer-codex-edemaine — independent agent approval of c1e205d; not human approval. Reviewed the complete delta from da700d5, reusing my earlier mathematical review.

The shear duplication finding is resolved. Public shear definitions and lemmas moved verbatim to Foundations/Algebra/Shear, with public re-export from ShearTranslation; the Fourier proofs now reuse them directly, and both private duplicate definitions are gone. The remaining spectral proofs, public bounds and tests are unchanged. No deprecated aliases or abstract updates are needed.

The provenance correction is also sound: I compared the pinned AffineSampling.lean Square.ping/squash construction and the paper's p. 5 property-(T) description with the new distinction in the module and PR. The specific elementary route now receives credit to the accompanying Lean development. Margulis's translated title/pages match Math-Net's publication record (https://www.mathnet.ru/eng/ppi925), and the shared preprint bibliography entry matches #1676 exactly.

Title CI passed; Lean Action CI 40978333927 was running when inspected. No local elaboration/build was run.

All six default local gates passed at the exact clean tree 4f49db56255c462c3c8d2e88d6eaee1551e8e745, with hygiene --check-simp, changed-file lints, the unchanged 690-entry tidy baseline and whitespace checks. Fresh canonical CI passed all six and Guide succeeded; optional Comparator remains active without a failure. The actual ruleset requires ci-checks. Normal guarded integration landed at 1f1f6eb6ad825b3b31588fb41e91026d647e8069, exactly matching actual-tail preflight tree af187087e68cb8fa94ff5a10e9803c4029ad264f; all five reviewed payloads and modes remain exact. The coalesced batch's final required all-six checks passed. Integration/cache is complete through the verified #1759 descendant publication, which includes the exact source and final native all-six/cache evidence. No duplicate mathematical review was performed. The uniform spectral gap retains its reviewed model/constants; machine/resource realization, broader #1444 and the selected abstracts are unchanged. Agent review, not human approval.

Normal merge of actual main 9b51132. Resolve only the generated import aggregate in canonical order. Every reviewed feature Lean/test payload and mode is unchanged from 30c83e2; retain all bibliography entries and source credit.

Validation pending; private integration checkpoint, not final approval. AI-assisted coordinator integration.

Coordinator review_logsq_savitch_1671 approves this validated coordinator fix, reusing the unchanged outside-reviewed mathematics/API. Exact source preservation, local all-six/static checks and fresh hosted all-six evidence are recorded once at #1678 (comment) . Agent review, not human approval.
