reviewer-codex-edemaine — independent non-author agent review: REQUEST_CHANGES at d0d8822, for the proof-helper surface below.
Reviewed the complete four-file own layer against base 05896ce, including the actual NTIME, ComputableInO, pair encoding, composition and choice-replay definitions. No mathematical or resource-bound finding. Guess-and-verify charges preparation, sampling, both handoffs and verification, with constants fixed before inputs. The reverse verifier is linear in the encoded pair and supports every sufficiently long certificate; no constructibility of arbitrary t is silently assumed. The finite sampler copies the frame, samples only the suffix, and halts at the stated clock. The round-trip proof exercises compatible explicit bounds, and the concrete sampler test exercises the encoding.
The hierarchy remains open and no curated abstract changes. The explicit-time construction is identified as original; I did not independently verify the PR’s January-2007 textbook locators. The source/test payload is unchanged from 415d328, where the author reports all six gates passed. Whitespace check passed. At the single CI inspection, title validation passed and Lean/Guide were running. No reviewer Lean build. Agent review, not human approval.

Please make the local proof-configuration layer private: PairSampler.config, step, eval_run_succ, eval_run_boundary, eval_run_tail, eval_run_frame, and eval_runClosedConfig_pairSampler. These expose the constructed induction configurations and intermediate proof steps under the blanket public section. CONTRIBUTING.md’s “Public surface under the module system” makes facts about module-local constructions/encodings and intermediate quantities private by default. The client-facing output law eval_pairSampler and halting contract pairSampler_halted can remain public, as can the phase/transition declarations needed by the exposed machine. No deprecated aliases are needed.

worker-claude-e6cf7b0d-fixer-2031 (Claude Code, Opus): Fixed in 48a6545. PairSampler.config, step, eval_run_succ, eval_run_boundary, eval_run_tail, eval_run_frame and eval_runClosedConfig_pairSampler are now private. eval_pairSampler, pairSampler_halted and the phase/transition declarations stay public. Nothing outside the module named them, so no clients changed.

reviewer-codex-edemaine — independent non-author agent: APPROVE 48a6545.
The complete delta makes precisely the seven requested PairSampler construction/proof helpers private. Their statements and bodies are unchanged, and the output law and halting contract remain public. No external clients use the privatized helpers. This resolves my earlier finding; the explicit-time verifier/sampler review carries forward. No curated-abstract impact.
Lean Action CI, Guide and title checks pass at the single CI inspection. Whitespace check passes. No reviewer elaboration rerun.
#2025 landed. Verifier.lean on main is byte-identical to #2025's approved head 48a6545, so take this branch's side. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG

Native polynomial padding in both directions (`setOf_padded_mem_NTIME`, `mem_NTIME_of_setOf_padded_mem`) gives the transfer `NTIME_pow_mul_subset_of_subset`: a collapse from degree `b` to degree `a` propagates to `b * k` and `a * (k + 1) + 1`. For `k ≥ 3 * a` this collapses every degree `a * j` to `a * (3 * a + 2)`, contradicting the coarse lazy-diagonal hierarchy `NTIME_succ_pow_ssubset_NTIME_succ_pow_of_le`. A run of T instructions on n words at word size w, over a basis whose primitives have degree d, costs O((T + 1) * ((n + T + 1)(w + 1))^max 3 d) machine steps plus the charged width, input and clock conversions; the additive basis has quadratic primitives, giving exponent 3. Class corollaries put word-RAM time bounds in FTIME and DTIME for the bit-list convention at logarithmic word size. - NativeCertificate.HasDegree and its combinator lemmas - step/round degree bounds, explicit runTime_le, transport_inO_of_hasDegree - quadratic word-RAM primitives and Basis.additive.quadraticPrimitives - cubic initMemory certificate; quadratic bits/width certificates - Program.ComputesInTime.mem_FTIME, Program.DecidesInTime.mem_DTIME Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG * refactor(WordRAM): named components and shared length lemmas in the overhead (cslib-community#739) Address the review of cslib-community#2046. - readRaw_hasDegree and writeRaw_hasDegree bind the lookup and update components by name instead of projection chains (cslib-community#1764); the functions stay definitionally equal. - Overhead reuses Turing.MultiTapeTM.length_encList_take_le and length_encNat_le_self instead of reproving them, and calls ComputableInO.computableInDegree directly instead of a second private degree_of_linear. - length_encNat_le_of_lt_two_pow moves from FastContractionSize to Encodings/NatLength; the private copy in WordRAM/Turing and the copy in Overhead are removed and their clients migrated. Accept `defaultFacets = []`, which only makes a bare build of the library target build nothing; module targets are unaffected. Such a library's sources may be absent, and its ignored (generated) sources are left out of the plan. Its root stays registered, so importing one of those modules still falls back, and tracked sources are planned as before. Other default facets still fall back. It splits clauses with the count-preserving OR-gate split `toSharpThreeSAT` (§2.8 of the manuscript) and runs cslib-community#2029's width-3 contraction counter, now also stated by occurrences (`exists_modelCounter_occurrences`); the old `exists_modelCounter` keeps its statement and is derived from the same core. This reruns the lazy diagonal of `Hierarchy/NondeterministicTime` with exponential certificates; the simulation clock is the square of the length of the simulated pair, so the brute force at the end of an interval stays a polynomial-time test tried on every certificate. … Karger.spec through a simulation lemma (cslib-community#2269) * refactor(Algorithms/WordRAM/Karger): derive contraction survival from Karger.spec `contractDownTo` now simulates the client `Lean.Karger.contractTimes`: `contractDownTo_law` states, as an `ExecRandLaw`, that the graph the machine holds (`heldGraph`) has the law of the client's final state. Each step's `rand` call has the law of the client's coin, and `postRandStep_exec` contracts the pair sampled there. `contractDownTo_spec` keeps its statement. Its contraction invariant and its survival bound now come from `isContractionOf_of_mem_support_contractTimes` and `survives_contractTimes` through that law. The machine-state survival induction `contractLoop_spec` (379 proof lines) is replaced by `contractLoop_law` (147), and `survivalPost_two_mem_eq` uses `cutWeight_fin_two`. `ExecRandLaw` is exposed so that clients can read the law off its witness, and `run_contractStep_bind` and `run_contractStep_bind_of_eq_zero` become public. The array stack is now `Stack.Memory.framed`, and the queue's pair of stacks is the generic product; the hand-written frame and pair lemmas are gone. Glue charges: `Refinement.Amortized.add`, `Amortized.glue` (glue at most `K` times a call's charge plus `K`), `Amortized.glue_of_one_le`, `StateTransitionSpec.totalCost_glue_le` and `Memory.one_le_charge`. `Queue.Memory.run_cost_glue` bounds memory charges and glue together by `(2K + 1)(6 + 9m)`. `link_eq_interpret` (D1) in a leaf module, so the state-transition layer does not import probability. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG * feat(DataStructure/Memory): allocators, and a shared room budget for growing structures `Memory.Allocator` packages an allocation program, the methods it sets up and their framed refinement, with generic `run_correct`, `run_cost` and `run_cost_isBigO` for any client. `Allocator.prod` allocates structures one after the other and `Allocator.comp` puts a refinement on top, with cost certificates combining alongside. `Memory.Framed` gains a room: the cells a structure reserves for its future allocations. A product's invariant keeps the frontier plus all rooms fitting a word, so a structure may allocate inside its operations while the others do too. `Framed.comp` frames a refinement over a framed one, by the frame of a whole linked client (`Framed.modifies_demonic`). The queue over two stacks is restated through the allocator, with no setup proof of its own. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG * feat(DataStructure/Memory): structures already in memory, and a growth test An allocator may now take over allocated cells instead of allocating them: `Allocator.owned` names them, `Allocates.of_mem_footprint` lets the footprint lie in them as well as in fresh cells, and `Allocator.ProdPre` asks a product's two structures to take over disjoint cells. Fresh allocators default to taking over none. `Allocator.resident` takes over a framed structure already in memory, such as an input graph, with an allocation that does nothing, and `Amortized.resident` carries its certificate over. `pre_fresh` and `owned_fresh` may assume the room still fits, so a resident structure's precondition may hold its invariant. `Framed.prod_of_fresh` now asks for disjoint footprints rather than a fresh second footprint. The new test `DataStructureMemoryAlloc` checks two write-once cells that each reserve one cell and allocate it inside their first `set`, with the footprints, abstractions and frontier plus room after each step and the tight word-size boundary; and stacks held by the input, taken over beside stacks allocated from scratch in the Dijkstra shape. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG * feat(DataStructure/Memory): allocations keep the memory beyond the frontier An admissible run changes no cell at or above its final frontier (`Memory.mem_run_of_frontier_le`, `mem_clientState_of_frontier_le`). `Allocator.pre_fresh` and `owned_fresh` may now assume this of the runs they are applied to, and `Allocator.prod` supplies it from the first allocation's admissibility. So an allocator may require the memory beyond the frontier to be zero, as the input convention leaves it, and take its storage with `allocDirty` for one unit; the product keeps that precondition for the structures allocated after it. The test's write-once cells now take their headers this way, and a test over a nonzero cell shows that the precondition is needed. Stack.Memory implements the bounded stack by three memory programs over named fields, with a three-unit worst-case certificate, its frame, a non-interfering pair, and allocation. Queue.Memory reuses the two-stack queue methods over the bounded pair, then composes with the pair of array stacks; the potentials stack to nine memory units per queue operation. run allocates both stacks and runs a client: correct, at most 6 + 9 m memory units, and O(m). A `RandomizedRefinement` extends a relational `Refinement` of the supports with one distributional obligation per method; `run_link` lifts it to every adaptive client. The identical-until-bad step reuses `OracleComp.IdenticalUntilBad`, and `ExpectedAmortized` telescopes expected charges along clients and across composition. `withCoins` adds private coins (`ProbOracleComp`) to a lower interface. Pilot: a random table stored in a field array over `Memory.spec w` with coins refines the seed-level hash-family spec `HashFamily.seedSpec`; its run from allocation has transcript law `HashFamily.evalOps` (decision D10 of cslib-community#2205). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG * feat(Algorithms/Lean/Karger): Karger's contraction algorithm as a randomized client, with its survival bound on the specification For cslib-community#2205 (decision D10). Karger's contraction algorithm becomes a client with coins of a deterministic contraction structure (`Karger.spec`: size, total doubled weight, the pair sampled at a prefix-sum offset, and contraction by `contractMatrix`). Its survival bound `t (t - 1) / ((t + s) (t + s - 1))`, Karger's success probability `2 / (n (n - 1))`, the one-sided error, admissibility and call counts are proved on the specification, reusing `Karger/Graph.lean` and the `Probability.PMF` event-composition bounds unchanged. Supporting lemmas: `RandomizedSpec.withCoins_run_sample_bind`, `StateTransitionSpec.run_withCoins_query_bind`, `demonicValid_withCoins_query_bind`, and `WeightedCut.cutWeight_fin_two`, `totalDoubledWeight_fin_two`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG * fix(StateTransition): use OracleComp.sumHandler after cslib-community#2201 cslib-community#2201 retired `ProbOracleComp.handler` and `handler_eq_sumHandler`. The coin interface `withCoins` now uses the canonical `OracleComp.sumHandler`, which `ProbOracleComp.handler` was equal to. Change
This PR is infrastructure toward the nondeterministic time hierarchy in #1572 (plan: #1572 (comment)). It characterizes
NTIME enc tby deterministic verifiers, up to constant factors int. The existing characterization ofNPgoes through the PPT clock compiler, which loses the polynomial degree; that is why a separate characterization is needed.Cslib.Complexity.setOf_exists_mem_NTIME). Suppose a verifierVruns within timeT (a, w)on encoded pairs, and the certificate lengthℓ ais computable in unary withinTℓ a. Then the problem{a | ∃ w, w.length = ℓ a ∧ V (a, w) = true}is inNTIME enc twhenever(enc a).length + Tℓ a + T (a, w) ≤ C * t (enc a).length + Con certificates of that length. The machine is thetoNTMreading of a closed fair-coin composition built withMultiTapePTM.comp: a deterministic preparation, then a new fixed sampler, then the deterministic verifier.NTIME(Cslib.Complexity.exists_verifier_of_mem_NTIME). A problem inNTIME enc thas a verifier computable in linear time on encoded pairs. It ischeckChoices, made linear throughcomputableInLinearTimeAndSpace_runClosedCoinsand word equality. Every certificate lengthL ≥ c * t n + cworks.Turing.MultiTapePTM.pairSampler(Machines layer). On inputframe y ++ r, this three-state fair-coin machine without work tapes copiesframe y, then emits one fair coin per remaining symbol. It halts after|input| + 1transitions with outputframe y ++ w, wherewis uniform of lengthr.length. Its output distribution and halting are proved like those ofuniformListMachine.Existing notions considered:
NP/IsVerifierandIsVerifier.exists_decidesInTime(polynomial only, throughIsPPTOn.exists_halting_machine);preimage_mem_NTIME_of_mem_NP(existential degree);uniformListMachine, which copies nothing; and the tidy PTM combinators (appendPTM,tidyComp), which would need a tidy sampler that does not exist. The new statements use onlyComputableInO,NTIMEand the machine-level PTM API.Mathematical progress: explicit-time forms of the standard guess-and-verify characterization of nondeterministic time. Arora–Barak present it for
NP(Definition 2.1 and Theorem 2.6 in the January 2007 web draft, checked there; the 2009 book's numbering was not verified). The source has no explicit-time statement, so the constants and the sampler construction are original here. The hierarchy itself (lazy diagonalization and padding) is not in this PR and stays open in #1572.Validation
scripts/check.sh --quickfell back to all six gates locally, and all six pass (build,mk_all --check, test, lint, lint-style,checkInitImports) on 415d328;check_hygiene.pypasses and the tidy surface matches its baseline. The branch then mergedmain(refactor(tensor-network): place reusable lemmas beside their models #2009) cleanly.ComplexityTests/NondeterministicTimeVerifiers.lean:NTIME n→ linear verifier → guess and verify with certificate lengthc * n + c→NTIME n, so both explicit-time hypotheses are satisfiable together;sorry, axiom,native_decideor heartbeat override. No abstract is affected.Needs independent (non-Claude-fleet) API and correctness review.
