feat: tell followers about someone's first commit - #1189
Newcomers whose first post gets an answer come back 61% of the time, against 40% when nobody answers.
Newcomers need to get answers on their 1st commit
So we notify their followers (imported from GitHub) of their 1st commit so they can say "Hello".

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Followers are now notified when someone they follow makes their first approved commit. Each person’s first-commit notification is sent once, and replies do not trigger it.
First-commit notifications appear in the notification list with a commit icon and the label “made their first commit.”
A first commit that gets an answer brings its author back far more often
(61% against 40%), and newcomers already have followers, mostly brought
over from GitHub, who never chose to follow them here. Their followers now
get a notification for their first approved top-level commit, once, never
from or to bots, and not across mutes or blocks.
The change adds notifications for eligible followers when a developer’s first approved top-level commit is created or approved. It adds the notification type to backend filtering and frontend rendering, with tests for eligibility, exclusions, and both dispatch paths.

Summary
Eligibility and recipient rules app/Enums/NotificationType.php, app/Actions/CreateFirstCommitNotifications.php, tests/Unit/Actions/CreateFirstCommitNotificationsTest.php, tests/Unit/Enums/NotificationTypeTest.php
Adds the first_commit type and selects approved top-level commits with no earlier approved top-level commit by the author. The action excludes bot authors and followers, muted or blocked followers, and followers mentioned or quoted in the commit. It inserts notification rows in chunks and ignores duplicates. Tests cover eligibility, exclusions, and repeated handling.
Creation and approval dispatch app/Actions/CreateCommit.php, app/Actions/UpdateCommitStatuses.php, tests/Unit/Actions/CreateCommitTest.php, tests/Unit/Actions/UpdateCommitStatusesTest.php
Calls the notification action after commit creation and after commit approval. Tests verify that each path creates a notification for a follower.
Filtering and display app/Queries/NotificationBuilder.php, resources/js/types/notification.ts, resources/js/pages/notification/index.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
Includes first-commit notifications in approved-commit filtering and frontend notification types. The notification page displays the commit icon and the label “made their first commit.” The knowledge base describes the notification.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#592: Adds approved_at for commit approval ordering; this change determines the first approved commit using created_at.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6da70
First-commit notifications may slow approval for authors with large follower lists. The change is mergeable with owner awareness of this scaling issue.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6da70
The new notifications retain approval, mute, and block checks. No material security defect was established in the inspected flow. Delivery now adds follower-proportional work to posting and moderation transactions, and production scale and deployment behavior remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added exposure is distribution of an approved author's commit to eligible follower inboxes and additional writes to the shared notifications store. Its immediate scope follows the stored follower set; the inspected producer does not impose a total fan-out limit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Inspected API and CLI creation controllers pass the current user into CreateCommit, which creates through that user's commits relationship and derives approval from existing administrator or reputation checks. Manual moderation requires administrator authorization. The new notification action re-queries approved state rather than trusting a caller-supplied status.
observed — The inspected web inbox queries notifications for the current recipient. First-commit notifications require an associated approved commit, and read-time filtering excludes muted actors and both block directions, including when those relationships change after insertion.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Rejection leaves an existing first-commit notification stored but hidden by the approval filter. The unchanged deletion action removes commit-linked notifications transactionally; the unchanged restoration action restores the commit and scores without regenerating notifications. The new type inherits this lifecycle rather than introducing a separate recovery mechanism.
inferred — The producer materializes follower IDs and all notification rows before chunked insertion, so memory and transaction duration grow with eligible follower count. This couples notification workload to posting and moderation completion, but available evidence does not establish production exhaustion or an exploitable denial-of-service threshold.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Establish an operational fan-out budget and consider bounded recipient processing to contain memory and transaction cost, while preserving approval gating, recipient controls, and database-enforced idempotency.
