Preserve Mermaid source in PHP and TypeScript body segments; render diagrams only when near the viewport using strict Mermaid mode and an inert SVG image. Keep native code-block controls, escaped fallback, source copy and zoom. Add parser and React tests, docs and a pinned Bun lockfile.

Validation: 4/4 fork CI; full 4530 PHP tests; live Chromium desktop/mobile proof at https://github.com/Xauele/dev-null.sh/actions/runs/40416945958

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Mermaid diagrams render in commits and replies, including draft previews, with light and dark themes.
    • View or copy diagram source, adjust zoom from 50% to 200%, or reset to the default size.
    • Diagrams load as they approach the viewport; wide diagrams can be scrolled on smaller screens.
    • Diagram colors adapt to the theme, with source viewing available when needed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or oversized diagrams fall back to readable source instead of disrupting surrounding content.
    • Static excerpts and private Remotes continue to display Mermaid blocks as code.

Walkthrough

The change preserves Mermaid source in code block segments and adds on-demand rendering for eligible commit content. The diagram component supports source display and copying, theme updates, and zoom. Static excerpts and message text do not render diagrams.

Changes: Mermaid commit content

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve Mermaid source
app/Services/CodeSpans.php, resources/js/lib/code.ts, resources/js/types/commit.ts, tests/Unit/Services/CodeSpansTest.php
Mermaid block segments now include the original source alongside escaped fallback HTML. The block type permits an optional source field. Tests cover lowercase and uppercase Mermaid labels and escaped content.
Render and control diagrams
package.json, resources/js/lib/mermaid-renderer.ts, resources/js/lib/mermaid-theme.ts, resources/js/components/mermaid-diagram.tsx, tests/Unit/MermaidDiagram.test.tsx
The Mermaid renderer loads on demand, serializes render tasks, and uses strict security settings and theme configurations. The diagram component adds viewport-triggered rendering, source controls, theme updates, fallback states, and zoom from 50% to 200%. Tests cover output constraints, fallback behavior, and themes.
Select diagram rendering
resources/js/components/commit-body.tsx, resources/js/components/chat/message-parts.tsx, tests/Unit/MermaidDiagram.test.tsx, tests/tsconfig.json, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
CommitBody renders Mermaid segments only when enabled, non-static, and supplied with source. Message text disables diagram rendering. Tests cover rendering conditions and fallbacks; documentation describes the behavior and exclusions.

Possibly related issues

  • security issues bugs #1197: The change uses strict Mermaid rendering settings and displays generated SVG as an image, addressing the issue’s concern about HTML or SVG injection sinks.

Possibly related PRs

  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#850: Both changes use the CodeSpans block-result contract. This change adds optional Mermaid source while retaining html.
  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1210: Both changes modify fenced-block parsing and the block-segment contract. This change adds Mermaid source and uses it for diagram rendering.

Suggested reviewers: xheaven

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review cc29b

Reviewed Mermaid image sources are blocked before rendering, leaving no actionable merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to cc29b

Diagrams now interpret user-written text in readers’ browsers. Input limits, strict security settings, and image-only display reduce exposure. No exploitable issue was established, but external-resource handling during diagram construction remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A content author whose Mermaid block reaches an eligible viewer can trigger browser parsing without a separate render click. Default-enabled consumers include folded commit bodies and composer previews; poll labels also use BodySegments. Message text explicitly disables diagrams, and excerpts use static presentation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Final image isolation is downstream of Mermaid parsing and rendering, so it does not alone establish containment of temporary-DOM resource loads. The media filter does not explicitly recognize every hypothesized representation, including reference-style Markdown images and CSS-escaped URLs. Whether the pinned dependency accepts or loads those forms remains unresolved; no working bypass was established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Unmounts and source or theme changes suppress stale consumer results but do not abort underlying rendering. The application provides no timeout for a permanently pending render and no explicit cleanup of dependency-created temporary DOM. These are unresolved containment and recovery properties, not demonstrated failures.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the pinned dependency with browser-level network and DOM assertions covering alternate media encodings, success, render failure, and abandoned renders. Use those results to determine whether stronger pre-render isolation or explicit cleanup is necessary.

Reject Mermaid image nodes before rendering.

A non-static Mermaid block from a commit reaches renderMermaid when it is near the viewport. Mermaid 11.17.2 accepts img node data, creates an Image, and assigns the commit-controlled URL to img.src before returning the SVG. The browser can therefore request https://attacker/x.png before the blob-backed SVG is displayed.

The normal application response adds only frame-ancestors 'none'. The repository defines no img-src restriction for commit pages. A commit author can therefore cause viewers to make off-origin requests that expose their IP address and visit timing. Reject image nodes, or permit only local and explicitly approved image URLs, before calling mermaid.parse and mermaid.render.
