feat: draw code commits as a code window in their share image - #850
A commit's share image drew code blocks as plain text, with the ``` fences and no indentation. Now the code is drawn in a dark editor window, highlighted with the site's dark-theme code colors.
Commits without a code block are unchanged (byte-identical image).
Before
After
To try it: commit a code block, then open /@{username}/commits/{id}/og.png.
Tests: the highlighted HTML is parsed back into the exact code, the window and colors are checked by pixel, and long, wide, empty and multiple blocks all fit the card.
Q&A
What if a commit has more than one code block?
Only the first is drawn. Other blocks, and the text after the first one, are left out of the image, not the commit.
What happens to code that doesn't fit?
Shorter code is drawn larger. Lines too wide are cut with …, and code too long ends in a … line.
Where do the colors come from?
The dark theme's code colors in app.css, copied into OpenGraphCanvas with a "keep in sync" note, like CodeSpans does for code.ts.

New Features
Commit previews can display the first nonempty fenced code block in a dark, syntax-highlighted editor window with a language label.
Text immediately before the code may appear above it. Code is sized to fit, with overflowing lines or content shortened with an ellipsis.
Inline code, empty code blocks, and commits without a nonempty fenced block continue to use standard previews.

Walkthrough
Commit Open Graph images now display the first nonempty fenced code block in a syntax-highlighted editor window. The image can include preceding prose. Inline code, empty blocks, and bodies without fenced code retain the prose preview.

Summary
Highlighted code and canvas rendering app/Services/HighlightedCode.php, app/Services/OpenGraphCanvas.php, tests/Unit/Services/*
HighlightedCode converts highlighted HTML into text runs with span classes and expanded tabs. OpenGraphCanvas draws the editor window and renders colored, clipped code lines. Tests cover parsing, colors, labels, clipping, indentation, and emoji.
Commit image extraction and layout app/Actions/CreateCommitOpenGraphImage.php, tests/Unit/Actions/CreateCommitOpenGraphImageTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The image action extracts the first nonempty fenced block, fits it into the image, and uses the prose layout when no such block exists. Tests cover code-block selection and related cases. The knowledge base documents the preview behavior.
The code-preview changes preserve literal code text and documented fallback behavior, with no remaining actionable merge risk.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to fd76a
The change remains within image generation for already-public, approved commits. Existing access checks and input limits remain in place, and the new renderer draws code as text rather than executing it. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this change was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The newly reachable processing is in the existing public commit-image request path, using stored approved-commit content. Shared text escaping also reaches user images. The inspected change does not expand caller privileges or introduce another service boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — User-authored code and language labels reach new rendering logic, but the canvas consumes text rather than executable code or browser HTML. Labels are cleaned and truncated, class metadata selects only fixed colors, and ampersands are escaped before GD rendering.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The code path processes the complete selected block before limiting displayed lines and columns. Existing input validation and successful-image caching constrain this work, but output clipping is not a pre-highlighting processing budget.

A commit with a fenced code block now shares as a dark editor window with
its first block highlighted, instead of the raw fences in Geist. Commits
without a code block draw as before.

passed to text(), preventing numeric character references from being interpreted

GD draws numeric character references such as `&dev-null-sh#65;` as the character
they name, so code like that showed differently in the share image than
in the commit. Escape ampersands wherever text is drawn or measured.
