Summary

  • feat: show hex colors as swatches #1064 shows hex colors like #ff8a4c with a swatch but people write colors as rgb() hsl() and oklch() too (tailwind v4 is all oklch) and those stay plain text
  • now rgb() rgba() hsl() hsla() lab() lch() oklab() and oklch() get the same swatch outside code

Changes

  • colorsIn() also finds color functions with three numbers on one line split by spaces with an optional / alpha and the same whole word rules as hex so rgb(1, 2 3) or xrgb(1 2 3) stay text
  • commas with an optional fourth number only count in rgb() rgba() hsl() and hsla() since CSS rejects them in lab() lch() oklab() and oklch()
  • cssColor() gives the swatch its color and linkified-text.tsx uses it
  • one line in KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
  • nothing is stored and nothing changes on the server or in the API

Validation

  • lint types JS tests and build pass locally plus the full pest suite with 100% coverage (4529 tests)
  • new cases in tests/Unit/Colors.test.ts fail without the change including lab(52%, 40, 59) and hsl(20, 100%, 65%)
  • headless chrome agrees on the comma rule: CSS.supports is false for lab(52%, 40, 59) and oklch(0.75, 0.15, 50) and true for rgb(255, 138, 76) and hsl(20, 100%, 65%)

Visual evidence

before after

Device verification

  • desktop chrome only since the swatch is the same inline span as the hex one on every screen size

Independent review

  • read-only Claude agent: CODE PASS and VISUAL PASS on base 75c969e1 head 9463b8a5 after a FAIL round that caught escaped characters written out literally and line breaks inside a color
  • then CODE PASS on head 88c357ee for the comma rule with visual review not needed since it only drops swatches that painted nothing and the screenshots show space syntax only

Limitations

  • None

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Color swatches now render CSS color functions such as rgb(), hsl(), and oklch() alongside hex colors.
    • Color functions can use space- or comma-separated values, with optional alpha where supported. Detected colors retain their original function notation and appear in the order they occur in text.
  • Documentation
    • Updated color guidance to cover supported CSS color functions and their value formats.

Walkthrough

Color detection now recognizes supported CSS color functions alongside hex colors. Detected colors retain their source order, and swatch backgrounds use the detected color’s CSS value. Documentation and tests cover the added formats.

Changes: CSS color function swatches

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and format color values
resources/js/lib/colors.ts, tests/Unit/Colors.test.ts
colorsIn recognizes supported CSS color functions and hex colors in source order. cssColor returns function values unchanged and adds a hash prefix to hex values. Tests cover recognition, rejected inputs, ordering, and formatting.
Render and document color swatches
resources/js/components/linkified-text.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
Swatch backgrounds use cssColor. The documentation describes supported CSS color function formats alongside existing hex rules.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Restrict legacy comma-separated channels to valid CSS values.

The shared channel pattern matches hsl(20, 100, 65) and rgb(255, 0%, 0). Both are invalid in legacy comma-separated CSS syntax. colorsIn() therefore adds swatches whose backgroundColor cannot display the matched color. Use function-specific component patterns for the comma-separated alternatives. (w3.org)
