perf: reduce rendering work and prioritize first photos - #1226
Reduce repeated work when rendering feeds, searching emoji and conversations, and scrolling chat. Prioritize the first feed photo so the browser can load and display it sooner.
Local CPU benchmarks, using the median of 31 samples:

Changes
Reuse date formatters with a bounded cache, preserving time zones and daylight-saving behavior.
Build graph indexes once instead of scanning every node for each reply.
Reduce repeated work in emoji search, inbox search and certificate highlighting.
Find the newest 25 chat messages without scanning the full history.
Stop timestamp updates in hidden tabs and refresh immediately when the tab becomes visible.
Load the first photo in the first log card or focused commit eagerly, at high priority, and show it directly from the server HTML. Other photos remain lazy-loaded.
No database, server application, dependency or lockfile changes. Tab-switching work stays with existing PRs #755 and #953; lazy-loading and guest-polling improvements stay with #1205 and #1130.
Output comparisons pass for 300 graph layouts, 3,096 emoji queries and more than 20,000 date-format cases.
Helper typechecking, formatting and whitespace checks pass.
Full application checks remain blocked locally by missing PHP dependencies and generated Wayfinder routes. The wider TSX run has 22 passing files and 45 failing files; lint and application typechecking also fail on missing generated imports.
Browser measurements used production with desktop/mobile emulation. The patched build still needs hydration, navigation, layout-stability and device verification.
The production mobile trace measured 7.52 s LCP on Slow 4G with 4× CPU throttling. Its first photo waited 2.86 s before loading and another 2.09 s after downloading before painting. The image changes target those delays; post-change LCP has not yet been measured.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
Improved responsiveness in conversation search, emoji search, chat scrolling, and commit graph rendering.
Reduced repeated work when displaying dates and times.
Improvements
The lead or pinned commit image on log pages now loads with higher priority, which may help it appear sooner.
Bug Fixes
Invalid dates now display a clear “Invalid Date” label.
Certificate fingerprints in HTML attributes remain unchanged.
The pull request changes timestamp formatting and update behavior, prioritizes selected commit images, and optimizes several search, graph, certificate, and chat paths. It adds regression tests, benchmark scripts and results, and documentation of measurements and limitations.
Date and relative-time formatting reuses formatter instances. The shared timestamp interval pauses while the document is hidden and refreshes when it becomes visible. Tests cover formatting and visibility behavior; the benchmark compares baseline and current outputs.
Hot-path algorithms and benchmarks resources/js/lib/{graph,chat-scroll,certificate-hashes,conversation-search,emoji}.ts, tests/Unit/{GraphEdges,ChatScroll,CertificateHashes}.test.ts, scripts/performance/*, PERFORMANCE.md
The graph, chat-boundary, certificate, conversation-search, and emoji-search paths use updated scans or indexes. Tests and benchmark scripts check behavior or output parity and record timings.
Log feeds prioritize the first card image, or the pinned card image when present. The focused commit page also prioritizes its image. Other images remain lazy-loaded; the production traces are documented as observations, not measurements of the patch.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#892 — Both concern feed rendering and scrolling, but this pull request does not add the requested DOM virtualization.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1039 — Both address feed and Remotes responsiveness, but this pull request does not implement asynchronous navigation.
Possibly related PRs
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1150 — It introduced the shared reader-clock formatting path and useNow store, which this pull request changes.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#592 — Its log-ordering changes affect which commit is first in the feed, and this pull request prioritizes that commit’s image.

Merge Risk: Low · up to fcd10
The image-loading behavior is mergeable with a small cleanup: remove the unused pinned-log priority path and its unrealistic test case.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to fcd10
The inspected changes primarily affect rendering and request timing. Image visibility checks remain in place, formatter state is bounded, and timestamp updates resume when the page becomes visible. No introduced security issue was established, but server-side media permissions and URL provenance were outside the inspected scope.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed browser-request exposure is earlier fetching of an already-rendered first image on eligible views, potentially before it would meet a lazy-loading threshold. No additional image selection or authority transfer was found in the inspected path. The host and authorization scope of supplied image URLs remains unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — CommitCard still checks showImages before rendering CommitImages, and the browser sink remains image.url. The new priority flag is downstream of that visibility gate; it does not add URL validation or replace server authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The first clock subscriber refreshes the snapshot and registers visibility handling. Hidden state clears the interval; visible state refreshes before restarting it; the final unsubscribe clears the interval and removes the visibility listener. Tests describe hidden-on-mount, resume, resubscription, hydration snapshot, and cleanup behavior, but were not executed in this review.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "perf: reduce rendering work and prioritize first photos" matches the main changes. The diff adds a shared timestamp formatter cache, pauses relative-time updates while tabs are hidden, indexes graph branches, precomputes emoji search entries, deduplicates inbox results, and adds a prioritized, eagerly loaded first image for the lead or pinned commit card and the focused commit. The title covers both the performance work and the image prioritization, so it describes the main change without being overly broad.

Docstring coverage is 40.63% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 32 functions across 21 files. Remove the unreachable log/show priority check on the pinned card.
pinnedCommit is set only on the profile page. CommitFeed on log/show receives no pinned commit, so page.component === 'log/show' is always false in the pinned branch. The condition is dead logic that implies a log-page pinned card exists. Keep the pinned card lazy, as the performance scope requires. Changing the condition to user/show would make profile feeds eager, which PERFORMANCE.md excludes. The log/show pinned-card test fixture also builds a state the app never produces, so it should go too.

Update the pinned-card branch in CommitFeed to keep its image lazy by removing
the page.component === 'log/show' priority condition, and remove the log/show
pinned-card test fixture that represents an impossible state.
