fix: erase the link cards of commits a deleted account takes with it - #1230
a link to a commit unfurls into a card whose title and description come from that commit's page so they hold Name (@handle) on /dev/null: “…” and the commit's text
DeleteCommitContent already erases those previews when a commit is deleted but DeleteUser didn't so after an account is deleted other people's link cards kept showing its name and handle and what it wrote
now deleting an account erases the previews of links to every commit it erases or empties
Changes
DeleteUser deletes the link previews whose url points at one of those commits before it erases them in one query (the commit id is read out of the url like the 2026_10_20_120000 migration does with lower() so a link typed with an uppercase id goes too)
the query that finds those commits moved into erasedCommits() which the translation cache cleanup already used
commits and messages that linked to them just lose the card since both foreign keys null on delete
one sentence in KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md under deleting your account
Validation
lint (pint and rector) phpstan type coverage JS tests build and the full pest suite pass (4547 tests with 100% coverage)
a new test in DeleteUserTest covers the user's own commit and someone else's reply in their thread and their reply that stays as a tombstone and a link with an uppercase id and checks that an unrelated preview stays and the linking commit just loses its card
the test fails with the old DeleteUser (the previews are still there) and passes with this one
Visual evidence
a commit that links to a post of an account which then gets deleted
before
after
local data on each build: the linked post's card comes from PageMetadata::commit() like the real unfurl and the account is deleted with that build's own DeleteUser
the inline handle/hash link stays since it is part of the linking commit's own text
Independent review
read-only Claude agent: CODE PASS on base 8f887ac4 head b5107831 after a FAIL round that caught a phpstan error and how slow one ilike per commit gets on a big link_previews table which the single query fixes
Limitations
previews of links to the deleted user's profile or followers pages still hold their name and are left for a follow up since matching a handle needs care
previews left behind by accounts deleted before this change stay until a cleanup like the 2026_10_20_120000 migration runs for them
DeleteUser now reuses a query for the user's commits and replies in threads they started. It uses that query to collect translation keys and delete link previews whose URLs reference those commits. A unit test covers matching previews and unrelated records.
Changes: User deletion
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define the erased-commit query app/Actions/DeleteUser.php
A reusable query selects the user's commits and replies in threads they started, including soft-deleted commits.
Remove previews for erased commits app/Actions/DeleteUser.php, tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php
DeleteUser uses the query to collect translation keys and delete matching link previews. The test checks previews with uppercased commit IDs, unrelated previews, and an unrelated commit's reference to a deleted preview.
Account deletion can remove a link card for an unrelated external page in a narrow matching case. Constrain cleanup to this site’s commit URLs before merging, or accept that bounded risk.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b5107
The change improves deletion privacy while preserving current-user deletion controls and transactional database cleanup. Shared cards are intentionally removed wherever they appear. Complete erasure during concurrent preview creation remains uncertain, but no material security regression was established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — Effects extend beyond the deleted account: previews are shared by URL, so deleting one removes its card from every referencing commit or message, including records owned by other users. The selected extracted ID must belong to the erased-commit set.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An external URL containing an erased commit’s ID can also match the cleanup. This is broader than canonical local-link identity, but individual commit erasure already deletes previews using a similarly broad URL substring. The inspected comparison does not establish a materially new arbitrary-preview deletion capability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Web account deletion remains behind authentication, and API deletion remains behind signed-request authentication. Both controllers obtain the current user rather than accepting an arbitrary target-user identifier.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The transaction protects existing matched rows but does not establish erasure against concurrent preview insertion and late metadata writes. Preview storage has no target-commit foreign key, and the asynchronous writer does not revalidate target deletion. Missing queued models are discarded, which protects already-deleted preview rows but not a new row missed by cleanup. This residual limitation does not worsen the base behavior, which retained previews altogether.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define a concurrency-safe lifecycle for local-commit previews, coordinating preview creation and final metadata persistence with erasure. Canonical local-target identity would also avoid treating unrelated external URLs as local commit links.

Limit deletion to URLs that identify this site's commits.
If an external URL such as https://example.com/commits/{erased-id} appears in a commit, this predicate deletes its preview when the user is deleted. CreateCommit accepts external URLs and shares a preview between commits that link to the same URL. An unrelated user's commit can therefore lose its card for an external page. Match the site's commit URL, including its host and route structure, before deleting the preview. Add an external URL with the same ID to the preservation test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

this is how DeleteCommitContent and the 2026_10_20_120000 migration already find the previews of links to a commit (any url with /commits/{id} in it)
a preview only goes when its url holds the uuid of a commit this account just erased so an unrelated page can't match by chance
the selectRaw('id::text') flag is a constant with nothing from the user in it

@sulimanbenhalim You’re right about selectRaw('id::text'): it is a constant expression. The SQL-injection warning does not apply.
I also confirmed that DeleteCommitContent and the migration match /commits/{id} without checking the host. That precedent explains the predicate, but it does not remove the edge case in my comment. If an external URL contains the erased commit’s UUID, DeleteUser will delete its preview. The match does not depend on a chance UUID collision.
I’ll leave this finding open as a low-priority question about the intended URL scope, not as a SQL-injection concern. If matching external URLs is intentional, the host restriction I suggested is unnecessary.
