fix: erase the link cards that deleted accounts left behind - #1232
they still hold Name (@handle) on /dev/null: “…” and the commit's text in their title and description
this one off migration erases them like 2026_10_20_120000 did for the content of deleted commits
Changes
a migration deletes the link previews of /dev/null commit pages (on the host of app.url or a subdomain like www.) whose commit is gone or has no author left which is what DeleteUser leaves behind
previews of live commits including ones still in their undo window are kept and so are links to other sites
it is one statement that reads the commit id out of each url the same way 2026_10_20_120000 does and uses not exists so postgres runs it as an anti join however big commits is
Validation
lint (pint and rector) phpstan type coverage JS tests build and the full pest suite pass (4547 tests with 100% coverage)
a test in DeleteUserTest runs the migration: a tombstone's preview and a missing commit's preview (typed with an uppercase id or on www.) are deleted while the previews of a live commit and of one still in its undo window and an example.com url with the same path shape and a host that only ends in the app's host are kept
the test fails when the host check is dropped or loosened to any host ending in it or narrowed so www. misses and when the live commits aren't excluded and when soft deleted commits count as gone
Visual evidence
a commit that links to a post of an account deleted before #1230 (so its card was left behind) before and after the migration runs
before
after
local data: the linked post's card comes from PageMetadata::commit() like the real unfurl and the account is deleted with the current DeleteUser then the migration runs with production's app.url

read-only Claude agent: CODE PASS on 73c3ec5c..c8684d27 for the follow up that only matches the app's host or its subdomains after a round that showed anchoring on :// alone would miss www. links
Link previews for local commit URLs are removed when the referenced commit is missing or no longer associated with an account. Matching also works with uppercase commit identifiers and application URLs using a www prefix.
Previews for existing commits, including soft-deleted commits that remain associated with an account, and links to external sites are retained.

Walkthrough
A migration deletes local commit link previews when no commit with a non-null user_id matches the URL’s commit identifier. A test checks removal of previews for erased commits and retention of control previews.

Summary
Migration and validation database/migrations/2026_10_27_160000_erase_the_link_previews_of_erased_commits.php, tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php
The migration deletes matching previews when no commit with a non-null user_id matches the lowercased 36-character identifier in the URL. The test checks removal of previews for tombstoned commits and retention of previews for existing commits, deleted commits with users, external URLs, and nonmatching hosts.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1153: This migration targets internal commit URLs handled by the LinkPreview records introduced in that PR.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1231: Both changes concern previews for internal commit URLs; this migration deletes records when the linked commit was erased.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to c8684
The migration behavior aligns with the documented application and database environment, with no merge-blocking risk established.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to c8684
The cleanup improves deleted-account privacy, but its URL matching can also erase unrelated-site link cards. The impact is limited to optional preview metadata and references; posts and messages are not deleted.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The destructive cleanup infers site ownership from unanchored URL text. An unrelated URL containing .{app-host}/@.../commits/{missing-id} in its path matches the deletion predicate despite having an external authority. Because previews are shared, deletion removes that card from every referencing commit or message. Ordinary external-host retention tests do not cover this boundary crossing.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The operation spans matching preview rows across the application database, regardless of which users or conversations reference them. Its demonstrated destructive authority is limited to preview metadata and optional foreign-key references, not the referencing post or message bodies.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A stored external URL can carry the configured host and commit-shaped suffix inside its path or query. Leading SQL wildcards allow that text to reach the privileged deletion sink without proving local authority. This creates a bounded integrity failure during migration, not an arbitrary deletion capability or privilege escalation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The configured-host filter and live-owner anti-join are explicit deletion controls. Tests intentionally include www-prefixed hosts, retain ordinary example.com and nonmatching-host URLs, and verify uppercase-ID cleanup. These controls establish useful cases but do not validate the actual URL authority.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Base destructive selection on a validated URL authority and canonical commit path, with an explicit policy for accepted subdomains. Embedded local URLs in external paths or queries should not establish ownership.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix: erase the link cards that deleted accounts left behind" matches the main change. The PR adds a one-off migration that deletes link previews for commit pages of deleted accounts when the commit is gone or has no author, and the title states this purpose with a conventional commit prefix. It is concise and specific. It does not mention the host check or the preservation of live and undo-window commits, but the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
