feat: show dev/null commit link cards as the commit they point to - #1231
a link to a commit on /dev/null gets the same card as any website: the site name then a long Name (@handle) on /dev/null: “…” title then the body again in grey with a tiny drawing of the commit and it opens /dev/null in a new tab
the composer preview shows the mark and handle/hash too before you commit
feat: render commit links as quote cards #1153 goes further with a live card from the server (avatar and images and polls with visibility checks) while this one only restyles the card we already store so it costs no query and you can pick whichever fits
Changes
commitLinkTo() in lib/urls.ts reads the handle and the commit from a /dev/null commit link and linkified-text.tsx uses it instead of keeping its own copy of the pattern
link-preview.tsx shows the mark with handle/hash and the description at 15px for those links and skips the drawn og.png (a commit's own image still shows) and opens the commit with an inertia Link
screen readers hear @handle’s commit hash like the inline link and the loading skeleton drops the thumbnail for these links
composer-preview.tsx shows the mark with handle/hash and says it unfurls into a commit card
nothing new is fetched or stored since the card already holds the commit's text from its page so cards made before this change get the new look too and it saves the og.png request
KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md and DESIGN.md describe the new card
Validation
lint types type coverage JS tests build and the full pest suite pass (4546 tests with 100% coverage)
tests/Unit/LinkPreview.test.tsx renders the card: a commit link goes to /@handle/commits/id with no target and no image and no generic title while its own image stays and a quote gets no link and other links keep the old card and the loading skeleton drops the thumbnail
tests/Unit/CommitLinks.test.ts covers links that match and the ones that don't (a profile and og.png and a query string and a look-alike host and other sites and bad handles)

while the card loads its skeleton is two lines of text so a one line commit settles about 20px shorter and a three line one about 20px taller (layout shift 0.0004 to 0.002 right after posting) where the old skeleton matched short cards and came up 20px short for long ones

Limitations
the card shows the text the linked commit had when the link was unfurled like every other link card
the loading skeleton can't know how long the commit is so it can be off by about one line

New Features
Links to commits on dev-null.sh now display commit cards with the author, shortened commit ID, commit text, and first attached image when available.
Commit cards open the commit in the same tab. In the composer preview, commit links are identified separately from other links.
Documentation
Updated guidance describing the contents and behavior of commit preview cards.
The change adds shared parsing for dev-null commit URLs and uses the parsed handle and commit ID in linkified text and preview cards. Commit previews display commit-specific details, handle images, and link to the commit page. Documentation and tests describe and verify these changes.
Changes: Commit Link Previews
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Commit URL parsing and linkification resources/js/lib/urls.ts, resources/js/components/linkified-text.tsx, tests/Unit/CommitLinks.test.ts
A shared parser validates dev-null commit URLs and returns the handle and lowercased commit ID. Linkified text uses these parsed values. Unit tests cover valid and invalid URLs.
Composer and link previews show commit-specific marks, handles, hashes, descriptions, and images. Non-static commit preview cards link to the commit page. Tests and documentation cover the card content and behavior.
The new commit-card assertions do not run in CI. Add them to the unit-test workflow; this is a bounded coverage gap rather than an established card failure.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to dae39
The cards reuse existing metadata and navigate through the existing commit page. Restricted URL recognition, scoped commit binding, and viewer visibility checks contain the change; no material new security exposure was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The affected scope is presentation and navigation for viewers of recognized commit-link previews. The new client caller does not confer additional commit-reading authority: access still depends on the destination page's current-viewer authorization.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — A supplied preview URL influences the displayed commit identity and navigation parameters, but it does not establish authorization. Scoped route binding preserves the user/commit relationship, ShowCommitRequest applies Commit::isVisibleTo for the viewer, and the page query retains viewer-aware data loading. These controls predate this PR and remain on the new navigation path.
