feat: add user preferences for date and time formats - #737
A fresh scheduled-commits PHP run passed 52 tests with 444 assertions after the fixture correction.
Client and SSR builds passed.
Fresh Chromium and Playwright Firefox checks compared feature head with upstream 822ce773 at 1440×900, 1366×650 and 390×844, in light and dark themes. Each engine passed 12 feature cases covering both preference combinations, plus six baseline cases. Checks covered settings save/reload, profile and preview clocks, unchanged instants, owner timezone, preview dismissal, scheduled dates, both action labels, and row/panel fit. No browser errors were recorded. A pointer recording also covered preview hover/dismissal and scheduled controls with keyboard focus.
Chromium's small desktop first-load layout shifts matched baseline: 0.001941 at 1440px and 0.003619 at 1366px. Narrow first-load and all preview-interaction shifts were zero. No Firefox layout-shift claim is made.
These are Linux browser viewport checks, not real-device, touch or iOS keyboard tests. Screenshots use DPR 2; the interaction recording uses DPR 1 at 5 fps and cannot rule out brief sub-frame artifacts. Earlier checks covered pinned timestamps, French locale, scheduling calendars across browser/account date boundaries, and DST gaps and overlaps.
The upstream audit integrated the new profile-preview clock and shared scheduled timestamp/action labels. The layout keeps upstream search/composer behavior and GoLiveDialog alongside the single TimeoutDialog. Both stale test fixtures now use handle instead of the removed username column.

A disposable merge with newer target 7d38bf2940f4ace7957fab1be108aef42fca86ba passed compatibility review, TypeScript checks and 227 targeted PHP tests with 1,475 assertions. Target bf277c9a6a8302ca381a1e4d20eae8842e35821e produces the same combined tree. This is not a full combined-tree suite or a fresh browser run of that newer target.
Local CodeRabbit completed with two suggestions. Neither requires a change: the export profile type already accepts nullable strings, and .ai/guidelines/general.blade.php explicitly requires forward-only migrations without down() methods.
Limitations
Hosted workflows require maintainer approval when GitHub reports action_required; local validation is not a hosted CI pass. No workflows were approved or manually triggered.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Choose month-first or day-first dates and a 12- or 24-hour clock independently in Appearance settings, or use browser defaults.
Preferences apply across the app and are saved separately from your profile timezone. Profile clocks use the profile owner’s timezone and your clock format.
Date and time preferences are included in profile exports.
Bug Fixes
Event log timestamps now show seconds, with additional date and timezone details on hover.
Schedule picker menus are less likely to be clipped by nearby content.
Documentation
Appearance guidance covers browser defaults, privacy, English month and weekday names, and display-only formatting.
The migrations add storage for each user’s date and time preferences.
The tsconfig change allows explicit .ts imports in application code. The existing native Node tests need that extension to load the new shared date/time module. tests/tsconfig.json already allows these imports, but the separate application type check uses the root config.
Rebased on upstream and resolved conflicts. Also updated the new formatFullDate helper to follow the user’s date preference. Full tests and build pass.
Merged the latest upstream changes and added our formatting preferences to the new profile clock, metrics, and moderation timestamps. All local checks passed. Ready for another look.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds nullable account date-order and clock-format preferences. Users can save them in Appearance settings or use browser defaults. Shared formatters apply these preferences across application and operations displays. Stored timestamps, scheduling, and day grouping remain separate.
Adds nullable date-order and clock-format fields, validates and stores updates, shares the values with the client, and includes them in profile exports.
Routes application date and time displays through the shared formatter. Mounts TimeoutDialog in the app and operations layouts.
Operations displays and validation resources/js/components/operations/*, resources/js/pages/operations/*, tests/Unit/DateTimeDisplays.test.tsx, tests/draft-images.config.ts, tests/tsconfig.json, tsconfig.json
Routes operations charts, event logs, forecasts, health panels, and metrics through the shared formatter. Tests cover selected formats, timezones, UTC date buckets, and date-input values.
Some timed-out users will not see why their post was rejected; restore a single root-level timeout dialog before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to ab4a8
The new settings are account-scoped and affect presentation rather than posting permissions or stored timestamps. Existing access controls remain in place. The database change is small, but production deployment and rollback sequencing have not been confirmed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new mutation is limited to the authenticated account's two display preferences. Request-controlled input cannot select another user or modify timezone through this action; no additional service or administrative authority is present in this write path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The settings route inherits authentication, the controller obtains its target through CurrentUser, and server validation restricts attacker-controlled format values. The flagged operations layout was already exported; its added dialog mount does not replace authenticated routes or existing administrator authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Timeout enforcement remains server-side and derives the active timeout from the authenticated user. The PR relocates the notification subscriber from the root into two layouts; it does not change refusal handling. Layoutless pages can lose notification coverage, but that does not remove the posting restriction. The module-global timeout state and lack of identity-transition cleanup already existed at the PR base.

Explanation
The title "feat: add user preferences for date and time formats" matches the main change. The PR adds separate date-format and time-format preferences under Settings → Appearance, with a preview and save action. It also adds the nullable user columns, the enums, the update action and controller, and the shared useDateTime formatting layer that the presentation changes depend on. The title is specific, short, and states the primary change from the developer's view. No search was needed for this check.

formatDate formats the date in options.timeZone, but its default withYear check compares the browser-local years. formatZonedDate uses this default and TimestampTooltip passes account or author timezones. At a year boundary, the displayed date can therefore omit the year when its displayed timezone is still in the previous year, or omit the next year after the displayed timezone has crossed into it.

database/migrations/2026_10_19_170000_add_date_and_time_formats_to_users_table.php:10-18 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Add a down() method that drops the two new columns.
This migration adds date_format and time_format in up() but defines no down(). The repository's Laravel migration guidance says to implement down() for reversible schema changes so migrate:rollback works. Adding nullable columns is reversible. Rolling back this migration cannot drop the columns, and the rollback can fail at this migration.
Suggested fix
public function up(): void
{
Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table): void {
$table->string('date_format')->nullable();
$table->string('time_format')->nullable();
});
}
++ public function down(): void+ {+ Schema::table('users', function (Blueprint $table): void {+ $table->dropColumn(['date_format', 'time_format']);+ });+ }
};

PreventPostingInTimeout flashes timeout details and returns back(). A timed-out web post can therefore return to banned, onboarding, or mobile/authorize. The root Toaster updates the timeout state, but these layoutless pages do not mount TimeoutDialog, so the user sees no timeout notice.
Restore the root mount and remove the layout mounts to avoid duplicate dialogs.

Summary
/dev/null currently uses fixed formats or the browser locale to display dates and times. Users cannot select their preferred formats independently.
This feature adds date and time display preferences without requiring a change to the browser locale.
Settings → Appearance now includes two independent preferences:
Oct 19), or day first (19 Oct).A preview shows the selected formats before saving. Preferences are private, saved to the account, and included in data exports.
Visual evidence
Appearance settings, captured in Playwright Firefox:
Day-first dates and 24-hour time
Month-first dates and 12-hour time
Profile preview and scheduling examples
Profile preview: 390×844, dark theme, day-first/24-hour
Scheduled commits: 1440×900, light theme, day-first/24-hour
Scope
The preferences apply to date and time displays, including commit and reply timestamp tooltips, day headings, activity labels, and scheduling labels.
This changes presentation only:
Adds two nullable user columns. Existing accounts use browser defaults until the user selects a format.
