Fixes #1071

Description

Uses
avigator.keyboard.getLayoutMap() (when available) to look up the user's localized physical key characters instead of statically defaulting to US-QWERTY mapping.

For example, when an AZERTY user loads the game for the first time, they will see ZQSD for their camera movement instead of WASD, because KeyW is geographically located at the Z key on AZERTY. This ensures the default camera controls accurately reflect the physical + shape configuration on their actual hardware without requiring manual reconfiguration.

Changes:

  • HelpModal.ts: Display physical key characters instead of QWERTY character outputs.
  • UserSettingModal.ts: Updated getKeyChar to prefer layout mappings over raw key code fallbacks.
  • UnitDisplay.ts: Fallbacks to accurate layout characters on unit build hotkey tooltips.

Please complete the following:

  • I have added screenshots for all UI updates (N/A)
  • I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file
  • I have added relevant tests to the test directory (N/A, hardware specific)
  • I confirm I have thoroughly tested these changes and take full responsibility for any bugs introduced

Walkthrough

Client components use a shared controller to retrieve browser keyboard layout maps. A shared helper resolves saved keybinds and layout-mapped labels. Shortcut displays use the resolved labels, and UnitDisplay omits empty labels.

Changes

Keyboard shortcut labels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared layout and label resolution
src/client/KeyboardLayout.ts, src/client/Utils.ts, resources/lang/en.json, tests/client/KeybindLabels.test.ts
A shared reactive controller retrieves and refreshes the browser layout map. resolveKeybindLabel uses saved bindings, mapped labels, and default codes. Shift prefixes use the translated label, with "Shift+" as a fallback. Tests cover keybind values and layout refresh behavior.
Help modal layout labels
src/client/HelpModal.ts, tests/client/KeybindLabels.test.ts
HelpModal uses the shared controller to read layout maps and resolve key labels. Tests cover map refresh and out-of-order responses.
Shortcut display integration
src/client/UserSettingModal.ts, src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts, src/client/hud/layers/TutorialPanel.ts
These components use resolveKeybindLabel with their keybind entries, fallback codes, and current layout maps. UnitDisplay uses Digit1–Digit9 and Digit0 fallback codes, and omits empty labels from tooltips and indicators. TutorialPanel uses Digit1–Digit8 fallback codes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5a45d

Saved number-row shortcuts can still show an AZERTY symbol instead of a digit. Correct that label before merging, or accept the limited display issue as a follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a3eb7

The change affects displayed shortcut labels, not the keys used to execute game actions. No security issue was confirmed in the reviewed paths, but broader security coverage and some browser lifecycle behavior remain uncertain.

Map Comma and Period before their fixed labels.

When layoutMap is available, getKeyLabel can show the active keyboard layout for these character-key shortcuts. The current specialLabels check returns > or < first, so the game-speed shortcuts can show the wrong label. Apply the layout lookup only to Comma and Period so modifier and navigation labels remain fixed.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Verdict: No issues found — the change is a well-scoped, low-risk UI enhancement.

Findings by severity: 0 blocking, 0 high, 0 medium, 0 low.

Reviewed for CLAUDE.md compliance (i18n/translateText() rules, src/core determinism/test requirements) and for bugs/logic/security issues introduced by the diff across src/client/HelpModal.ts, src/client/UserSettingModal.ts, and src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts. No user-visible text was added that requires translateText()/en.json entries, and no src/core files were touched. Two candidate issues (a declare global Navigator.keyboard augmentation living only in UserSettingModal.ts, and a missing .toUpperCase() in UnitDisplay.getHotkey) were investigated and ruled out on verification — the global augmentation pattern is program-wide and matches existing repo convention (e.g. DesktopShell.ts's window.openfrontDesktop), and the uppercase call is redundant since renderUnitItem already uppercases the hotkey downstream before rendering.

No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

I've applied the fixes requested by CodeRabbit!
esolveKeybindLabel now properly maps the legacy string entries, resolves the saved physical value through layoutMap first, and maintains the \Shift+\ prefix before falling back to the saved string key or formatted code.

Use physical key codes for tutorial defaults.

When no saved keybind exists, hotkeyFor passes HOTKEY_FALLBACKS to resolveKeybindLabel. The function looks up the value directly in the getLayoutMap() result. Values such as "1" do not match keys such as "Digit1", so users see the static fallback instead of the layout-specific character. Use KeyboardEvent.code values in HOTKEY_FALLBACKS.

🟡 Minor · Register a layoutchange listener to refresh keyboard layout when the… · UserSettingModal.ts:184-194

src/client/UserSettingModal.ts:184-194
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Register a layoutchange listener to refresh keyboard layout when the user changes it.

When the user changes their keyboard layout, navigator.keyboard emits a layoutchange event. UserSettingModal fetches the layout map once in connectedCallback() (lines 185-194) but does not listen for layout changes. This leaves this.layoutMap stale, causing getKeyChar() to display incorrect shortcut characters after a layout change.

The issue affects only the displayed labels—the modal remains fully functional, and keybind values are stored correctly. Closing and reopening the modal does not refresh the display because the inline page instance persists across close operations without disconnecting.

The fix follows the established pattern used by HelpModal.ts: register a layoutchange listener in connectedCallback() and clean it up in disconnectedCallback().

Suggested fix

src/client/hud/layers/TutorialPanel.ts:117-129
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Register for layout changes to refresh keyboard shortcut labels.

When the keyboard layout changes during gameplay, the tutorial panel continues to display shortcut characters from the previous layout. The component acquires the keyboard map once in connectedCallback() and never updates it. Since tutorial-panel is statically mounted and persists across the game lifetime, the stale map remains in use for the entire session.

Register a listener for the layoutchange event to refresh the map. Add a disconnectedCallback() method to clean up the listener.

keyboard layoutchange listener that refreshes layoutMap, and remove that same
listener in disconnectedCallback. Reuse the existing getLayoutMap update and
error-handling behavior so getKeyChar displays characters for the current

I verified the two latest requested changes against the current head d78b6474aeac993218754078a0e27491a63e83e1: HelpModal now refreshes on layoutchange and removes the listener on disconnect, and resolveKeybindLabel normalizes legacy array-valued keybinds before startsWith. Please review the current head.

Reviewed range: f1bcb2b..68ef5f0 (incremental since the last Claude review).

Verdict: No issues found. Findings: 0 critical, 0 major, 0 minor.

The only change moves refreshGlobalLayoutMap() out of the one-time initialized block in KeyboardLayoutController.hostConnected (src/client/KeyboardLayout.ts:59), so every host connect re-fetches the layout map. This is correct: the refreshId guard keeps the newest result when several hosts connect at once, the function returns early when navigator.keyboard is missing, and every registered listener is told when the map arrives. The existing tests (one getLayoutMap call on first connect, out-of-order resolution) still hold.

Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

Rebased onto current main for PR openfrontio#5568, linearizing the branch's repeated merges of main into a single commit carrying the full PR change.

Verified: tsc --noEmit clean; tests/client/KeybindLabels.test.ts 8/8 passing on top of main.

Verdict: No issues found. Findings: 0 high, 0 medium, 0 low.

I re-reviewed the whole PR at 585bda1 for bugs and for compliance with CLAUDE.md:

  • resolveKeybindLabel (src/client/Utils.ts) handles these cases correctly: saved values in the old array format, Null (unbound) keybinds, Shift+ codes, number-row and numpad keys that should keep their numeric labels, and the fallback to the saved key or the default code.
  • UnitDisplay and TutorialPanel now pass full codes (Digit1…) as defaults. These resolve to the same labels as before when there is no layout map. Unbound keys now hide the hotkey badge instead of showing an empty [].
  • KeyboardLayoutController: the shared map, the refreshId ordering guard and the listener cleanup on disconnect are all correct.
  • i18n: the new Shift+ text goes through translateText() and has an entry in en.json.

No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

Hey, this conflicts with main now. #6074 just bumped oxfmt and reformatted UserSettingModal, TutorialPanel and UnitDisplay, so it should all be formatting churn. Could you merge main in, keep your changes, and run npx oxfmt on those files afterwards? That should also clear the Prettier and generated-maps checks, which were failing because of main rather than anything in here.

Merge upstream main into fix/azerty-keybinds while preserving the AZERTY changes. Format the three files requested by the maintainer on the Actions runner.

Reviewed range: 585bda1..90cfc28. Most of this range is a merge of main, and those hunks were left out. The only change that belongs to this PR is the new .github/workflows/pr-5568-oneoff-format.yml.

Verdict: Needs a change before merge. 1 finding (medium).

File: .github/workflows/pr-5568-oneoff-format.yml

[Medium] A temporary workflow with write access is still in the PR diff and would be merged into main (.github/workflows/pr-5568-oneoff-format.yml:1-40)

  • What's wrong: The file says it deletes itself (git rm at line 34), but that only happens if a push to fix/azerty-keybinds has a head commit message containing Merge main and format followed by the PR number. At 90cfc28 the file is still there, so the job either never matched or never ran. The three source files it was meant to format (UserSettingModal.ts, TutorialPanel.ts, UnitDisplay.ts) are also unchanged in this range. If the PR is merged as it is:
    • main gets a dead workflow with permissions: contents: write that can commit and push to a branch.
    • That workflow runs npm ci without --ignore-scripts, unlike the repo's npm run inst.
    • The formatting it was meant to apply is still missing.
  • Suggested fix:
    1. Delete the workflow file from the PR.
    2. Run npx oxfmt src/client/UserSettingModal.ts src/client/hud/layers/TutorialPanel.ts src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts locally (or npm run format) and commit the result.

Thanks for merging main. Three things before this can go green:

  • Could you drop .github/workflows/pr-5568-oneoff-format.yml? We can't take a workflow file in here, and it won't run on our side anyway. Running npx oxfmt src/client/UserSettingModal.ts src/client/hud/layers/TutorialPanel.ts src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts locally does the same job. Those three files still fail the format check.
  • The merge dropped main's two // oxlint-disable-next-line import/no-duplicates comments (and the line above each) in UserSettingModal.ts, the ones sitting on the SettingKeybind and SettingSelect side-effect imports. That's what Lint is failing on. Copying those lines back from main fixes it.
  • After that, npm run lint and npm run format:check should both pass locally.

The keybind tests and typecheck pass on this head, so the actual changes came through the merge fine.

Merged current main (including the Oxfmt 0.73 update) into fix/azerty-keybinds and preserved the AZERTY changes. I also incorporated the upstream formatting changes into src/client/UserSettingModal.ts, src/client/hud/layers/TutorialPanel.ts, and src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts, including the conditional that hides empty hotkey labels. GitHub now reports the PR as mergeable. I couldn't execute npx oxfmt or the test commands in this environment: npm registry access fails with DNS/network errors, and the API-created commits did not trigger GitHub Actions, so the exact formatter/test runs still need CI verification.

Thanks, that's much closer. The workflow's gone, lint passes and the diff is back to just your changes. One file's left: src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts still fails the format check (two template expressions in there). It looks like it was formatted with the old oxfmt, so could you run npm ci first to pick up 0.73 from main, then npx oxfmt src/client/hud/layers/UnitDisplay.ts? That should get Prettier and the generated-maps check green.

I re-reviewed the whole PR at a24f6af for bugs and for compliance with CLAUDE.md:

  • Earlier finding fixed. .github/workflows/pr-5568-oneoff-format.yml is no longer in the PR diff.
  • resolveKeybindLabel (src/client/Utils.ts) handles all of these correctly:
    • Null (unbound) keybinds
    • saved values in the old array format
    • Shift+ codes
    • number-row and numpad keys that keep their numeric labels
    • the fallback to the saved key or the default code
  • KeyboardLayoutController (src/client/KeyboardLayout.ts): the shared map, the refreshId ordering guard and the listener cleanup are all correct.
  • HelpModal, UserSettingModal, TutorialPanel and UnitDisplay use the controller as intended. Unbound keys now hide the hotkey badge.
  • Lazy loading. HelpModal is still loaded through LazyModals.ts. Utils.ts imports KeyboardLayout with import type only, so the homepage chunk is unaffected.
  • i18n: the new Shift+ text goes through translateText() and has an entry in en.json.

No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

Reviewed range: 5a73a1e..8e4c6af. This range is a merge of main that brings in #5859 (Platform.hasKeyboard, the Keybinds tab on touch devices) and the bottom-rail ad changes. Those hunks come from main and were not reviewed here. The finding below covers the part of the merge that conflicted with this PR's own changes to UserSettingModal.ts.

Verdict: Needs a fix before merge. Findings: 1 medium.

File: src/client/UserSettingModal.ts

[Medium] The merge kept this PR's old version of handleEasterEggKey, which drops the instanceof Node guard that main has. A test merged from main will now hit it. (src/client/UserSettingModal.ts:~392)

  • What is wrong: On main, the handler reads:
    const target = e.target;
    if (!(target instanceof Node) || !this.contains(target)) {
The PR head still has const target = e.target as Node; if (!this.contains(target)). That code sits right below getKeyChar, which this PR rewrites, so it was probably lost while resolving the merge conflict.
  • Why it breaks: The new test from fix(client): show keybinds settings tab when keyboard is present on touch devices #5859, shows keybinds tab when a key is pressed while open on touch (tests/client/UserSettingModal.display.test.ts:~446), calls el.open(), which registers handleEasterEggKey. It then runs window.dispatchEvent(new KeyboardEvent("keydown")). So e.target is window, and this.contains(window) throws TypeError: parameter 1 is not of type 'Node'. Vitest's jsdom environment reports errors thrown inside listeners as unhandled errors, so the run is expected to fail. I could not run the test against the PR head to confirm this.
  • Related: The same merge also drops the this.lastHasKeyboard = Platform.hasKeyboard; line from onOpen() that is on main (gh pr diff shows it as removed). The keydown listener added in connectedCallback still covers the usual case, so this one is minor. Restore it anyway so the PR does not silently revert part of fix(client): show keybinds settings tab when keyboard is present on touch devices #5859.
  • Suggested fix: Use main's version of both spots: restore the instanceof Node guard in handleEasterEggKey, and add this.lastHasKeyboard = Platform.hasKeyboard; back at the top of onOpen(). Afterwards, gh pr diff should show no UserSettingModal.ts changes outside the keyboard-layout work.

Verdict: No new issues. Findings: 0 critical, 0 major, 0 minor.

Both hunks in this range (src/client/UserSettingModal.ts: the instanceof Node guard in the keydown handler, and this.lastHasKeyboard = Platform.hasKeyboard in onOpen) are already on main, so this push only merges the base branch in. It does not change this PR's own diff, and the merged code does not conflict with the PR's keyboard-layout changes.

No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.
