Held, do not merge yet. Ranked FFA stays until the new FFA rating is introduced. This removal ships in the same release as the rating, likely v36. It will be rebased onto main before then.

What this does

Removes the ranked free-for-all (FFA) matchmaking queue. Players can no longer queue for ranked FFA, and the server no longer checks in for or creates ranked FFA games. 1v1, 2v2 and Clan Wars ranked are unchanged.

What players see

  • The Ranked modal no longer has an FFA card. 1v1 and 2v2 sit side by side and the Clan Wars card spans the row below them.
  • The note under the cards no longer has the sentence about FFA.
  • The old FFA ladder stays on the leaderboard (the FFA tab is kept as it is, frozen), so past results remain visible.
  • Games that were already played are unchanged: stats, history and replays for old ranked FFA games still show up.
  • After a ranked FFA game (for example one already running when this ships), the win screen no longer offers "Play Again". Nobody can be put back into a queue that no longer exists.
  • Old ?requeue=ffa links now open nothing. Before, an unknown requeue value fell back to opening 1v1 matchmaking, which would have wrongly dropped someone into a 1v1 queue.

What changed, by commit

  1. ?requeue=ffa no longer opens 1v1 (new src/client/RequeueUrl.ts, with tests).
  2. No Play Again after a ranked FFA game (WinModal, with tests).
  3. FFA card and the "ffa" matchmaking mode removed from the client. The Clan Wars card spans the row. The en.json keys only the FFA card used are deleted and the pairing note is reworded.
  4. The server stops checking in for ranked FFA and stops creating ranked FFA games.
  5. Close code 4104 (close_reason.mode_retired) is reserved for a retired matchmaking mode, so infra has a code to refuse with.
  6. Two unused constants (RANKED_FFA_MIN_PLAYERS / RANKED_FFA_MAX_PLAYERS) are dropped from engine-api.

What is not touched

The engine is untouched apart from those two dead constants. RankedType.FreeForAll, the engine's ranked FFA win-check branches, the stats tree FFA case, the leaderboard response's ffa key and the leaderboard FFA tab are all kept so old games and the frozen ladder keep working.

Follow-up needed in infra

Once infra ships, old cached clients that still try the FFA queue are closed with code 4104 and stop waiting, and they see the generic "Matchmaking is unavailable right now" message because the matchmaking modal shows one message for every refusal. The close_reason.mode_retired text is reserved for any future screen that shows the reason.

Testing

  • npm test: 9435 passed, 2 failed in tests/UpdateRegister.test.ts. That test runs the update.sh bash script with a fake curl and fails on this Windows machine. This branch does not touch update.sh or that test. The same files are identical to main.
  • npm run lint, npm run typecheck and npm run format:check all pass.
  • The Win screen change is the absence of a button that only a ranked FFA game ever showed. No ranked FFA game can be created after the server change, so there is nothing to play through. The WinModal test covers it directly rather than staging a fake game.

Screenshots

Taken from the dev build, signed out (so the cards show the sign-in lock, which is the normal signed-out state).

  • ranked-modal-desktop.png (1280x800): three cards, 1v1 and 2v2 side by side with Clan Wars spanning the row, no FFA card, pairing note without the FFA sentence.
  • ranked-modal-phone.png (390x844): the same three cards stacked in one column, no FFA card, same note.

Walkthrough

Ranked FFA is removed from server matchmaking and client ranked-mode paths. Requeue handling now maps only the remaining ranked modes. The change also adds a terminal close code and English message for retired modes.

Changes

Ranked FFA Retirement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove ranked FFA from server matchmaking
packages/engine-api/src/game/GameTypes.ts, src/server/GameServer.ts, src/server/MapPlaylist.ts, src/server/RankedCheckin.ts, tests/server/*
The ranked mode list and polling loops no longer include FFA. The FFA game configuration and short-handed cancellation branch are removed. Server tests cover the updated queue behavior.
Update client ranked modes and requeue
src/client/Matchmaking.ts, src/client/RequeueUrl.ts, src/client/Main.ts, src/client/components/RankedModal.ts, src/client/hud/layers/WinModal.ts, resources/lang/en.json, tests/client/*
The ranked modal no longer displays FFA. Requeue URL and win-modal handling map the remaining ranked modes. Client tests cover the reduced card set and requeue behavior.
Add retired-mode close handling
packages/shared/src/CloseCodes.ts, resources/lang/en.json, tests/client/Matchmaking.test.ts
The shared close-code definitions add ModeRetired and its reason string. The English locale adds a message for retired queues. A test checks that the close code is terminal.

Players using a cached client may see a generic rejection instead of an explanation that ranked FFA was retired. This is a bounded messaging issue, but the message should be corrected.

Show the retired-mode message for close code 4104.

If the matchmaking service closes a socket with CloseCode.ModeRetired, this branch shows the generic matchmaking_modal.rejected message. The player does not see the new close_reason.mode_retired message. Handle ModeRetired before isTerminalClose, then close the modal and show the retired-mode message.

@iiamlewis FYI this one also now has some merge conflicts, possibly because of #6074 's stack
