Design only, for review before anything is built. Stacked on #12.

  • Spec 5, a common table view (lakekit-table). One view of a table whatever its format, above the format crates (D5):

    • schema, properties and snapshots;
    • live data files with statistics, partition values and a commit rank;
    • load, create, commit (append, replace, delete) and expire.

Iceberg comes first. Delta and DuckLake are shown to fit, and each gets its own spec. What only some formats have stays on the format's own type.

  • Spec 6, data file formats (lakekit-file, lakekit-parquet). A FileFormat trait with no I/O: writers return bytes, statistics and a footer, and readers ask for byte ranges. Parquet comes first, from Timelake's code and the parquet-stats feature. Vortex follows once Iceberg lists it (Core: Add Vortex format to Iceberg apache/iceberg#15915, feat: Add support for reading/writing vortex in iceberg apache/iceberg-rust#2835). The file-format crates can move to a library of their own later.

  • Spec 2, D17 supersedes D6. Arrow now follows the newest DataFusion release's major instead of iceberg-rust's, since Timelake's engine moves off iceberg-rust.

  • Milestone 0.2, "Any table format, any file format".

lakebed was hard to read. The crates are now lakekit-core, lakekit-iceberg, and lakekit, and the
repository is polythings/lakekit (GitHub redirects the old name).

The I/O boundary is two traits: Store for objects and Env for the clock, randomness, and waiting
(spec 1, D10), with WithEnv to pass both, MemoryStore for tests, and TokioEnv (feature tokio) for
native programs. UUIDs come from the uuid crate's builder, fed by the Env. lakekit-object-store is a
Store over any object_store client (spec 4); it enables no backends itself.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
main's content equals this branch's base (44a577d), so the tree stays as it is.
The time and randomness are two traits, as ZIO's services are (spec 1, D13): Clock (now_ms, sleep)
and Random (next_u64). Services passes a store, a clock, and a random source as one value; the
native ones are TokioClock (feature tokio) and OsRandom (feature getrandom).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The three traits, MemoryStore, the test and native implementations, and the
object_store adapter are loko's (polythings/loko), shared by the polythings
projects. lakekit-core re-exports them and keeps the error type (a store's
error converts into it), the UUID helpers, and Services, now built with loko's
derive. MemoryServices bundles a MemoryStore, a TestClock, and a SeededRandom
for tests. Clock::sleep takes a Duration. lakekit-object-store is gone; the
lakekit crate's object-store feature re-exports loko-object-store, and the
Iceberg commit through object_store is a lakekit-iceberg test.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
loko calls the things it passes resources and its derive Provides (loko#5).
Services and MemoryServices are Resources and MemoryResources, built with
#[derive(Provides)], and loko is pinned at the revision that has them.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
loko's Random now hands out generators (rng()) instead of numbers. UUIDs
fill their random bytes from one generator, snapshot ids and commit jitter
draw from one, and lakekit-core re-exports Rng, CryptoRng, and SeededRng.
loko is pinned at the revision with the change.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
loko declares bundles with #[loko::bundle] and #[loko::has(…)] fields
instead of #[derive(Provides)]; loko is pinned at that revision.

Commits took one value bounded by Store + Clock + Random, so callers had to
glue a store, a clock, and a random source into a struct that implemented
all three. Services is now a plain struct of three references with named
fields, built from whatever the caller has: Services::new(&s3, &TokioClock,
&OsRandom), or Services::new(&host, &host, &host) for one object that is all
three. Commit code says which service each call uses (services.clock.sleep,
services.random.rng(), services.store.put), and CommitHooks is generic over
the three and receives Services too.

MemoryServices is gone (the tests keep their own), lakekit-core no longer
re-exports loko's Has traits, and uuid_v7 takes a clock and a random source.
Spec 1 records D16.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR replaces the Host I/O boundary with separate Store, Clock, and Random services. It updates Iceberg reads and commits, adds a feature-gated object-store adapter integration, and revises project documentation, specifications, and CI checks.

Changes: Service-Based I/O and Iceberg Integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and export the service boundary
Cargo.toml, crates/lakekit-core/*, spec/0001-host.md, spec/0001-store-clock-random.md, AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, CHANGELOG.md, PRIOR_ART.md, README.md, .github/workflows/ci.yml
lakekit-core now exposes separate store, clock, and random services, a borrowed Services container, UUID helpers, and conversion from store errors. The former Host API and in-memory host are removed. Documentation and CI checks reflect the new boundary and feature combinations.
Use services in Iceberg reads and commits
crates/lakekit-iceberg/src/table.rs, crates/lakekit-iceberg/src/commit.rs, crates/lakekit-iceberg/src/lib.rs, crates/lakekit-iceberg/tests/iceberg_rust.rs, crates/lakekit-iceberg/README.md
Table reads now use Store. Commits and hooks receive Services, and use its store, clock, and random sources. Tests use separate service implementations.
Add object-store integration
crates/lakekit/Cargo.toml, crates/lakekit/src/lib.rs, crates/lakekit-iceberg/Cargo.toml, crates/lakekit-iceberg/tests/object_store.rs, spec/0004-store-adapters.md, spec/milestones/v0-1.md, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
lakekit adds a feature-gated object_store re-export of loko-object-store. An integration test commits and reloads an Iceberg table through the adapter. Documentation describes the adapter and its usage.
Update format specifications and roadmap
spec/0002-formats.md, spec/0003-iceberg.md, spec/0005-table-view.md, spec/0006-file-formats.md, spec/README.md, spec/milestones/README.md, spec/milestones/v0-2.md
The specifications add a common table view and file-format design, update Arrow and Parquet version alignment, clarify Iceberg writing details, and revise the specification index and milestones.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~50 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5c86c

The changelog points readers to a nonexistent type. Correcting that reference is worthwhile, but the issue does not block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5c86c

The service split preserves caller-selected storage authority and the existing commit publication and cleanup decisions. No introduced security weakness was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns the external storage adapter’s enforcement and failure behavior, plus lifecycle details of the proposed table abstraction.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective storage exposure follows the permissions and root of the injected Store, rather than a new tenant boundary in Services. The optional integration can reach the application-selected backend, so its independently attackable scope cannot be narrowed to a particular tenant, bucket, or filesystem location from this repository alone.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected path from table location and metadata-provided object paths to storage remains mediated by the supplied Store. Hooks receive the same service bundle used by the commit. Compared with Host, this does not add a new category of storage authority or direct provider access inside the Iceberg crate.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Retry reload, application-provided idempotent skip, best-effort failed-attempt cleanup, and retention after unknown publication remain structurally unchanged. Cancellation still has no automatic post-await cleanup or recovery protocol; this limitation predates the PR rather than establishing an introduced regression.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the pinned adapter against its security-relevant contract: reject out-of-root URIs, arbitrate concurrent conditional creates atomically, and preserve referenced artifacts after ambiguous writes. Before implementing format-neutral expiration, define its publication point, concurrent-reference protection, and recovery rules.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Clarify the per-field statistics wording.

Rewrite per field id min, max and null count as minimum, maximum, and null count for each field ID. This makes the statistic-to-field relationship clear.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the stale MemoryServices reference from the changelog.

Line 31 says "MemoryHost is MemoryServices". lakekit-core does not export MemoryServices. crates/lakekit-core/src/lib.rs exports MemoryStore, TestClock, and SeededRandom. spec/0001-store-clock-random.md also records that MemoryServices is gone. A user who reads this entry will look for a type that does not exist.

Name the real replacement instead.
