fix(ipc): one window for a burst of launches from the file manager - #24
Explorer starts one QuickPlay per selected file. With many files, some of those launches opened a window of their own instead of handing their file to the running player: dozens of windows for a few dozen files, and a crash for a library of 2000. Three causes: the queue held 64 messages and filled before the window was up; a ninth simultaneous connection was closed unread; and on Windows a pipe whose name is taken fails with "access denied" (first instance created exclusive), not AddrInUse, so a launch that lost the start race never retried.
The single instance is now strict (main.rs::single_instance): a launch that finds the socket taken or the player busy retries for up to 30 s, then exits. It never opens a window. The server waits for a free slot instead of refusing, the queue holds 1024 messages, and "access denied" from the listener is read as AddrInUse (ipc::listen, with a test).
Trade-off: if the running player stays blocked for more than 30 s, the files of the launches that time out are dropped rather than opened in new windows. No change to the IPC protocol, CLI or settings.
How I tested
Windows 11: N simultaneous waveflow-quickplay.exe --enqueue <file> launches (parallel Start-Process, each with its own log, under a separate pipe name):
Not run on Linux or macOS. Their sockets already reported AddrInUse; what changes there is that a launch that cannot hand over now retries and exits instead of opening a window.

cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --locked --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test --locked pass locally
If UI strings changed: every language in src/i18n/ updated, placeholders kept (none changed)
If a cross-cutting pattern changed: docs/ARCHITECTURE.md updated
Platform-specific behaviour: tested on the platform(s) named above (Windows only)
Follow-up (separate PR): one process for a whole Explorer selection, instead of one per file.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Three things let some of
those launches open a window of their own instead of handing their file
to the running player:
- the queue held 64 messages, filled before the window was up, and a
refused launch ran standalone;
- a ninth connection at once was closed unread;
- on Windows a pipe whose name is taken fails with "access denied"
(the first instance is created exclusive), not AddrInUse, so a launch
that lost the start race never retried and ran standalone.
The single instance is now strict: a launch that finds the socket taken
or the player busy tries again for up to thirty seconds, then exits; it
never opens a window. The server waits for a free slot instead of
refusing, the queue holds 1024 messages, and "access denied" from the
listener is read as AddrInUse.
Measured on Windows with simultaneous --enqueue launches: 1.2.0 opened
8 windows for 200; this opens 1 window for 1000, all 999 hand-offs
taken.

Walkthrough

Summary

Security architecture risk: Low · up to bac55
The change remains focused on local startup and file delivery. It improves burst handling without an established expansion of privileges. Timed-out launches can lose their pending files, and platform-specific recovery behavior remains incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected path carries file selections and playback mode into the local player's queue and focus handling. The identified effects concern that player's availability and queue contents; no new remote entrypoint or increased process authority was established by the reviewed change.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Machine-wide endpoints retain same-user verification on both client and server before message exchange or handling. Filesystem endpoints instead disable peer checks and rely on directory isolation; the cache/temp fallback is not subjected to the private-directory validation. That fallback and its exposure are unchanged in the compared code.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The larger queue remains count-bounded, and existing per-message limits remain 4 MiB and 10,000 paths. Increasing queue capacity increases potential retained message memory; it does not introduce an aggregate byte budget. The read deadline and eight-reader limit remain controls on incomplete-message handling.

From review:
- an error from ipc::send other than a path that cannot be carried or a
socket held by another user (a pipe broken mid-exchange, say) went
straight to Server::start, which found the name taken and ran
standalone: a window. It is now tried again like a timeout;
- a reading slot was given back after handle() returned, so a panic in
it (the release profile unwinds) kept it forever, and with the server
now waiting for a free slot eight of them would stop it. A guard gives
it back on drop, also when no thread could be spawned;
- ARCHITECTURE.md: the no-window rule is the taken-socket case only, an
instance that never answers keeps each launch trying for up to thirty
seconds, and Explorer's one process per file is said once.

From review:
- Server::start probed a socket file it could not bind with an unbounded
connect, and removed the file on any failure to connect, a live
instance's included: a second player. The probe now gives up after
CLIENT_TIMEOUT and counts as alive; only a refused connection or a
missing socket is stale. Any other failure leaves the file and reports
the name as taken, so the caller tries again instead of running
standalone.
- a launch whose message was queued but whose `ok` never reached it (a
timeout, a pipe broken after the write) tries again and its files were
queued twice. The server remembers, for a minute, the hand-offs it took
by the sending process and what they carried, and answers a repeat
without queueing it. The protocol is unchanged; two launches with the
same files are two processes, so both are still queued.
docs/ARCHITECTURE.md: the strict single-instance paragraph is kept; its
reason now names what still starts one process per file (a Linux file
manager, Explorer's "Open with"), since Explorer's own verbs start one
since #25.
A hand-off older than a minute was only dropped when a new one was
recorded, after the lookup: a new launch reusing an old process id with
the same files was answered ok and its files never queued. Expired
entries are now dropped before the lookup, with a test.

interprocess reads no peer process id on Darwin, so on macOS every
hand-off had no key and a retry after a lost `ok` was queued twice. The
peer's pid is read there with getsockopt(SOL_LOCAL, LOCAL_PEERPID); the
end-to-end retry test now runs on macOS as well, on a socket file.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

…s own
The socket sat under temp_dir() with a predictable name and whatever was
at that path was removed first. It now lives in a directory created for
the run with mode 0700, which fails if the name is taken, and is removed
afterwards.
