This PR proves the target of #1833, the HPV note's Theorem 3.1, unconditionally. It instantiates #1964's conditional containments with the contraction algorithm of Theorem D.1 that the stack below (#1944 → … → #1988) builds. It is the last step of #1538's T2.9 and of #1833's E1. The only axioms are propext, Classical.choice and Quot.sound.

Classes/CountingSimulation/FastSimulation.lean (new), in Cslib.Complexity.CountingSimulation, for {α : Type} {enc : α ↪ List Bool} {T : ℕ → ℕ}:

theorem NTIME_subset_iUnion_DTIME_two_pow_div_sqrt_log_two (hT : TimeConstructible T)
    (hTn : ∀ n, max n 2 ≤ T n) :
    NTIME enc T ⊆ ⋃ C, DTIME enc fun n => 2 ^ (C * T n / Nat.sqrt (Nat.log 2 (T n)))
-- likewise BPTIME_subset_iUnion_DTIME_two_pow_div_sqrt_log_two and
-- PPTIME_subset_iUnion_DTIME_two_pow_div_sqrt_log_two

theorem exists_decidableInTimeAndSpace_two_pow_div_sqrt_log_two_of_mem_NTIME
    (hT : TimeConstructible T) (hTn : ∀ n, max n 2 ≤ T n) {L : Set α} (hL : L ∈ NTIME enc T) :
    ∃ C d : ℕ, DecidableInTimeAndSpace L enc
      (fun a => 2 ^ (C * T (enc a).length / Nat.sqrt (Nat.log 2 (T (enc a).length))))
      (fun a => T (enc a).length ^ d)
-- likewise _of_mem_BPTIME and _of_mem_PPTIME

So one deterministic machine runs in time 2^(C·T/√⌊log₂ T⌋) and workspace T^d at the same time. Each theorem is one line: the matching …_of_contractionAlgorithm corollary of #1964 (BlockNetworks.lean), applied to fastContractionAlgorithm.

Classes/CountingSimulation/FastLeaves.lean: fastContractionAlgorithm := contractionAlgorithmOfNative fastAnalysis_nativeMk_holds. Its type is ContractionAlgorithm (encPair encNat encExplicitNetwork) (fun G => G.2.contraction) ExplicitAdmissible. In words, for all C D there is a K such that for 2 ≤ s, 1 ≤ P ≤ D s and an ExplicitAdmissible C s network, the native machine computes contraction % 2^P in time K (n+1)^K 2^(K s/√⌊log₂ s⌋) and space K (n+1)^K. Here n is the encoded length of (P, r, G). #1970 (with #1982 folded in) supplies the machine and proves hpoly and hζ; #1988 proves FastAnalysis nativeMk.

The names follow the snake_case pattern of recursionBound_le_two_pow_div_sqrt_log_two. The integration branch used a _sqrtLog suffix.

Mapping to the source

Source: the note Deterministic simulations of nondeterministic and randomized time: The ETH counting algorithm and HPV blocking, dated 30 October 2026, which Samuel supplied for #1833 (sha256 1326443a…). Theorem 3.1 is on p. 4 and Lemma 1.2 on p. 1. I checked both against the PDF.

  • "Assume the counting algorithm in Lemma 1.2." This hypothesis is discharged by fastContractionAlgorithm, which proves Lemma 1.2 (OpenAI's Theorem D.1 with ℓ = 1, [OpenAI2026ETH, p. 53]) for the narrower class listed below.
  • "For every time-constructible function T(n) ≥ max{n, 2}," This is TimeConstructible T together with ∀ n, max n 2 ≤ T n. The library's TimeConstructible omits Arora–Barak's n ≤ T n, but hTn implies it.
  • NTIME[T] ⊆ DTIME[2^O(T/√log T)] and BPTIME[T] ⊆ DTIME[2^O(T/√log T)]. O(·) is the union over C, and √log T is Nat.sqrt ⌊log₂ T⌋ with natural division. The floors change only the constant, since T ≥ 2. DTIME, NTIME and BPTIME are the library's Arora–Barak classes (Classes/Time.lean): multitape machines with a binary alphabet, time c₁ t(n) + c₂ in the encoded length.
  • The PPTIME[T] remark after the proof. PPTIME (Classes/PP/Time.lean) is strict majority, and ties reject.
  • "Both simulations use polynomial space in T." The exists_decidableInTimeAndSpace_… forms give one machine within both bounds.
  • "In fact, the algorithm computes the exact number of accepting padded binary choice strings." The machine computes this count internally (Assembly.lean's simulate_eq). This PR states no separate count corollary for the fast algorithm. exists_computableInO_count takes any ContractionAlgorithm, so such a corollary would also be one line.

Narrowings and differences

None of these restricts the class containments above. They are differences from the cited contraction lemma and from the manuscript's algorithm:

  • ExplicitAdmissible C s (r, G) is narrower than Lemma 1.2's hypotheses. It requires:

    • rows-first bipartite, with the first r vertices as rows;
    • s ≤ numEdges ≤ C s, a lower bound that Lemma 1.2 does not have;
    • at most C s vertices, where Lemma 1.2 allows polynomially many;
    • maximum degree at most C ⌊log₂ s⌋;
    • a full table of length 2^(ports) at every vertex, where Lemma 1.2 asks for total table length poly(s).

    The HPV block networks meet all of these (explicitAdmissible_blockNetworkOf, feat(Classes/CountingSimulation): block-counting network families (#1833 H3) #1911), so Theorem 3.1 is unaffected. A general Lemma 1.2 for arbitrary bipartite networks with polynomially many vertices is not proved here.

  • Capped precision. The machine first caps P at the encoded length of the network (capPrecision). This leaves the residue unchanged. The interface's bound covers 1 ≤ P ≤ D s, as in Lemma 1.2's 1 ≤ P = O(s).

  • Trinomial modulus. The coefficient ring uses X^(2·3^t) + X^(3^t) + 1, which is irreducible mod 2 (Cslib.irreducible_trinomial) and has degree 2·3^t > 4⌊log₂ m⌋ + 2. §D.4.1 (p. 57) instead enumerates an irreducible polynomial of degree 4⌈log₂ s⌉.

  • Theorem D.1 is used only as Lemma 1.2 uses it: ℓ = 1, explicit tables rather than entry routines, and degree O(log s) rather than ⌈s^(9/10)⌉. Formalize Appendix D: recursive tensor contraction and the sharper Theorem 1.1 bound for #k-SAT #1538 keeps the general form and the sharper #k-SAT bound.

  • Fixed clock with a fallback. The recursion runs for 2^(K₀(m+p)/√⌊log₂(m+p)⌋) steps and otherwise returns direct summation. It is correct for every fuel (fastValue_eq). The call-count constant C' = ⌊p/m⌋ + 1 ≤ D + 1 is chosen per input and is covered because ⌊log₂(m+p)⌋ ≤ 3⌊log₂ m⌋ (two_mul_sub_one_le_fuel, feat(circuit/frontier): the resource analysis of the native contraction recursion (FastAnalysis, T2.9) #1988).

Existing notions considered. fastContractionAlgorithm is a value of the existing ContractionAlgorithm interface, and the six theorems are instances of #1964's corollaries. This PR adds no new definitions or predicates.

Abstracts. No curated abstract changes. Selecting these containments as a headline (#1833's E2) is Samuel's choice.

Stacking

The base is now main; the whole stack below (#1944, #1952, #1970 with #1967/#1973/#1982, #1988 with #1979) has landed. The diff is just this PR's own layer. It contains FastSimulation.lean, fastContractionAlgorithm in FastLeaves.lean, their tests and one import. It also adds one sentence each to the module docs of BlockNetworks.lean and Containments.lean, pointing to the unconditional theorems.

AI assistance

fastContractionAlgorithm and FastSimulation.lean were written by worker-claude-e6cf7b0d-t2-analysis-a (Claude Code, Opus) on the integration branch. worker-claude-e6cf7b0d-t2-landing (Claude Code, Opus) cut them onto the stack, renamed the theorems and wrote this description, for coordinator-claude-e6cf7b0d. This needs outside-fleet review of the statements and the source mapping.

…p-adic valuation of Q[X]/(f)

T2.2 of #1538 (Theorem D.1 of OpenAI2026ETH, §D.4.1, pp. 57-58).

- GaloisRing p n f = (Z/p^n)[X]/(f): local with maximal ideal (p), residue
  field F_p[X]/(f) = GaloisField p (deg f), units = nonzero mod p; distinct
  digit lifts differ by units, so ring Lagrange interpolation holds there.
- Lagrange.ringInterpolate: Lagrange interpolation over a commutative ring at
  nodes with unit differences (Mathlib's Lagrange.interpolate needs a field).
- AdjoinRoot.padicValuation: for f monic and irreducible mod p, the largest
  p-adic valuation of a coordinate is a valuation of Q[X]/(f); its valuation
  ring is Z_(p)[X]/(f), whose elements of valuation one are units.

A mode splitting of a matrix W sorts the vertices of a row-to-column
Boolean tensor network into groups and its edges into packets, and splits
every entry of W into a local part and a sum over modes. Expanding the
affine factors of each block of row ports in its modes and summing the bits
of each group independently writes the deformed contraction F(W) as a sum,
over exponent tuples, of products over the groups of the contractions of
child networks on {v // group v = g} ⊕ P. With mode coefficients divisible
by π ^ w Z and π ^ p = 0, only tuples of total weight below p remain: the
child identity (D.16) of OpenAI2026ETH, §D.4.5–§D.4.6, pp. 62–63.

…ansion (D.12)

The Cauchy kernel in local coordinates over Z_(2) (Lemma D.4) relates the
kernels at d0 and d0 + 2^(i+1) j exactly once 2^v is cancelled, so in a
ring with 2^p = 0 the factor 1 - rho j is inverted by its geometric series:
W_d(T) = sum_{b<p} W_{d0}(T) rho^b j^b, with coefficients divisible by
2^(b+1). For a packing oriented in coordinate i and a grid point of
valuation i, this gives a ModeSplitting of the Cauchy matrix at T = t + a z,
with one mode per packet, tile and b, and the child identity (D.16) for it.

`AdjoinRoot.map_mk`, `AdjoinRoot.map_surjective_of_surjective` and
`AdjoinRoot.map_eq_zero_iff` move unchanged from `GaloisRing.lean` to the new

`AdjoinRootValuation` import it, so the coordinate valuation no longer depends
on Galois rings, ring interpolation or the finite-field identification.
Names are unchanged; `GaloisRing` re-exports the module publicly.

A generic recursion scheme (leaf test, leaf step, start/next/absorb/finish)
run by an explicit stack machine. Derivations `Eval I x y n h` (n nodes,
h stack levels) are evaluated in 2n - 1 steps through states with at most
h open frames. One native certificate runs the machine for a natively
computed fuel; its time is (fuel + 1) times a polynomial in (h+1)(F+1)
plus the leaf time, and its space a polynomial plus the leaf space.

reviewer-codex-edemaine (independent non-author agent): REQUEST_CHANGES — one quotation correction only at 6f775f9. Agent review, not human approval.

The source-access blocker is resolved by the pinned note in #2013. I verified its full digest against the earlier record and checked all five pages. Lemma 1.2 is on p. 1, Theorem 3.1 on p. 4, and the strict-majority PPTIME remark on p. 5. The hypothesis, padded binary-choice count, joint time/workspace bounds and documented narrower network interface match the formalization.

In the PR body's source mapping, the quoted time-constructibility bullet omits function. The source says “For every time-constructible function T(n) ≥ max{n, 2},”. Please restore that word and the continuation punctuation, or remove the quotation marks and label the bullet a paraphrase. This is required by AGENTS.md's exact-quotation rule; it needs no Lean change. The other quoted excerpts check out.

Reused the completed code review: all six own-layer Lean files remain blob-identical to the reviewed b4a0bf9 revision, and the aggregate change is the import union. No remaining code or mathematical finding, and no curated abstract impact. Current-head Lean CI and Guide passed at the single inspection. Diff checks passed; no new local Lean build.

  • Hypotheses. #check shows only TimeConstructible T and ∀ n, max n 2 ≤ T n. The existential constants are C in 2^{C·T/√⌊log₂ T⌋} and d in the space bound T^d, and neither lets brute force meet the bound.

… and leaf factor

Address the review of #2060 at 48ee919:

- Named components (#1764). `EntryContraction.guard`, `rootCall` and
  `clock` match on `(P, fl, r, G)`; `coreValue` on `x@(P, fl, _, G)` and the
  returned value `(tag, coeffs)`; `valueTag_polyTime`, `valueList_polyTime`
  and `fastCore_time`/`_space` bind `(tag, coeffs)`; and
  `CountingSimulation.length_parts_le_encInput` is stated over `P fl r G`.
  All are definitionally equal to the projection forms.
- One rows-first test. `DescribedNetwork.rowsFirst_polyTime` moves to the
  new module `Frontier/TensorNetwork/RowsFirstPolyTime.lean`, and
  `CountingSimulation.fastGuard_polyTime` uses it in place of its own copy.
  `ContractionSchedule.degreeBound_mono` moves to `Schedule.lean`.
- One leaf factor. `FastContraction.exists_leafFactor_le` bounds
  `2 ^ M (A p + 2) ^ A` once; `exists_leafCertificate_le` (tables) and
  `exists_leafCertificate_le_of_entry` both use it.
- Frontier facts out of `CountingSimulation`:
  `NativeChild.exists_mem_of_mem_nativeChild_inl` moves to `NativeChild.lean`,
  `FastContraction.Reach.exists_root_of_inl` to `FastContractionShape.lean`,
  `FastContraction.exists_leafCertificate_le_of_entry` to
  `FastContractionLeaf.lean`, and `EntryContraction.packetShape_rootCall` to
  `EntryContractionMachine.lean`. Their names and statements are unchanged.

The elaborated types of #1995's six theorems and of
`fastContractionAlgorithm` are unchanged.

…munity#1538 E1.3) (cslib-community#2060)

* feat(Frontier/TensorNetwork): contraction interface for entry procedures (cslib-community#1538 E1)

Theorem D.1 of the ETH manuscript (p. 53) contracts networks whose entries are computed by
procedures rather than listed in tables. This adds the interface the contraction algorithm
provides for them: `EntryAdmissible` (Theorem D.1's hypotheses with one constant, degree at most
`ceilNineTenths s`), `EntryContractionAlgorithm` (A_P-valued output, correct at the modulus
`FastContraction.modulus m`, ContractionAlgorithm-shaped bounds), and direct summation with an
entry procedure with its correctness and resources on every input and on admissible inputs.
The input format matches the truncation-order reduction's `encCore`.

* fix(Frontier/TensorNetwork): named components and a nonvacuous instance for the entry interface

Address the two findings of the review of cslib-community#2042 at 5cd05f4, whose layer

  function of `directCore`, and state `directCore_time`, `directCore_space`
  and `directCore_le` over `P fl r G` instead of reaching into
  `x.2.2.2`. Definitional behavior is unchanged (`directCore_time`/`_space`
  remain `rfl`, and `fastCore`'s `congr` proof is untouched).
- Test that the instance `tableAlgorithm : EntryContractionAlgorithm ..`
  satisfies its `bound` on an admissible input (two parallel edges at size
  2), and point to it from the interface's test.

…eger degree (cslib-community#2036)

* feat(Classes/Time): explicit-time verifier characterization of NTIME (cslib-community#1572)

Guess and verify within explicit time (`setOf_exists_mem_NTIME`), through a

* feat(Classes/Hierarchy): coarse nondeterministic time hierarchy by lazy diagonalization (cslib-community#1572)

For every degree d, NTIME((n+1)^d) is strictly contained in NTIME((n+1)^e)
whenever 6d + 14 <= e, separated by the explicit lazy diagonal problem.
The upper bound guesses a certificate and simulates a described verifier
with the native universal machine; the brute force at the end of each
interval uses a new exponential-time bounded existential, via Savitch's
algorithm at depth 1. The lower bound diagonalizes against the linear-time
verifier of cslib-community#2025.

* feat(BigO/PolynomialPadding): unary rounded powers and NTIME_succ_pow_eq

`computableInO_unary_roundedPower` writes `2 ^ (k * Nat.size (n + 1) + s)` in unary from a
binary natural within time `O((n + 1) ^ (k + 1))` and space `O((n + 1) ^ k)`.
`computableInO_roundedPolynomialPadding` now reuses it, dropping a private helper and the tidy
plumbing in its proof. `NTIME_succ_pow_eq` joins `DTIME_succ_pow_eq`, sharing a private bound.

* feat(Classes/Hierarchy): nondeterministic time hierarchy at every integer degree (cslib-community#1572)

`NTIME_pow_ssubset_NTIME_pow`: `NTIME (n ^ a) ⊂ NTIME (n ^ b)` on bit strings for integers
`1 ≤ a < b`, with the `(n + 1)` form `NTIME_succ_pow_ssubset_NTIME_succ_pow`.

Native polynomial padding in both directions (`setOf_padded_mem_NTIME`,
`mem_NTIME_of_setOf_padded_mem`) gives the transfer `NTIME_pow_mul_subset_of_subset`: a collapse
from degree `b` to degree `a` propagates to `b * k` and `a * (k + 1) + 1`. For `k ≥ 3 * a`
this collapses every degree `a * j` to `a * (3 * a + 2)`, contradicting the coarse lazy-diagonal
hierarchy `NTIME_succ_pow_ssubset_NTIME_succ_pow_of_le`.

* feat(WordRAM): explicit-degree overhead for the Turing-machine simulation (cslib-community#739)

Make the degree of the word-RAM => Turing-machine simulation explicit.
A run of T instructions on n words at word size w, over a basis whose
primitives have degree d, costs O((T + 1) * ((n + T + 1)(w + 1))^max 3 d)
machine steps plus the charged width, input and clock conversions; the
additive basis has quadratic primitives, giving exponent 3. Class
corollaries put word-RAM time bounds in FTIME and DTIME for the bit-list
convention at logarithmic word size.

- NativeCertificate.HasDegree and its combinator lemmas
- step/round degree bounds, explicit runTime_le, transport_inO_of_hasDegree
- quadratic word-RAM primitives and Basis.additive.quadraticPrimitives
- cubic initMemory certificate; quadratic bits/width certificates

* refactor(WordRAM): named components and shared length lemmas in the overhead (cslib-community#739)

Address the review of cslib-community#2046.

- readRaw_hasDegree and writeRaw_hasDegree bind the lookup and update
  components by name instead of projection chains (cslib-community#1764); the functions
  stay definitionally equal.
- Overhead reuses Turing.MultiTapeTM.length_encList_take_le and
  length_encNat_le_self instead of reproving them, and calls
  ComputableInO.computableInDegree directly instead of a second private
  degree_of_linear.
- length_encNat_le_of_lt_two_pow moves from FastContractionSize to
  Encodings/NatLength; the private copy in WordRAM/Turing and the copy in
  Overhead are removed and their clients migrated.

* fix(check): keep quick mode available with on-demand comparator challenges (cslib-community#2075)

cslib-community#1729 added the ComplexityComparatorChallenges library with `defaultFacets = []` and a
gitignored, generated source directory. quick_check.py rejected the unknown library option, so
every `scripts/check.sh --quick` fell back to all six gates.

Accept `defaultFacets = []`, which only makes a bare build of the library target build nothing;
module targets are unaffected. Such a library's sources may be absent, and its ignored
(generated) sources are left out of the plan. Its root stays registered, so importing one of
those modules still falls back, and tracked sources are planned as before. Other default
facets still fall back.

Add Krajíček's dag-like protocols for search problems (Definition 2.2),
with consistency, solving, communication complexity and the walk from the
source, and prove his Theorem 2.3: a protocol for the Karchmer–Wigderson
game with k inner nodes and communication t gives a separating De Morgan
circuit with at most (k·2^t + 1)·2^(t+1) gates, and a monotone circuit for
monotone protocols. Krajíček cites Razborov for the proof; the proof here
is direct, by restricted Karchmer–Wigderson formulas at the leaves of the
node protocols.

Make the monotone synthesis rules public and use them in the resolution
interpolation module. Add the Razborov (1995) Izvestiya entry, with details
from Krajíček's bibliography.

* feat(FineGrained): count models of every CNF in 2^O(N/√log N) by tensor contraction (cslib-community#2064)

One machine counts the satisfying assignments of every CNF formula, of any
clause width, in time 2^(A(N+1)/√⌊log₂(N+2)⌋) times a polynomial and in
polynomial space, where N is the number of literal occurrences
(`ContractionCounting.exists_modelCounter_unboundedWidth`); for at most D·n
occurrences this is 2^O_D(n/√log n) (`..._linearLength`).

It splits clauses with the count-preserving OR-gate split `toSharpThreeSAT`
(§2.8 of the manuscript) and runs cslib-community#2029's width-3 contraction counter, now
also stated by occurrences (`exists_modelCounter_occurrences`); the old
`exists_modelCounter` keeps its statement and is derived from the same core.

Closes cslib-community#2061.

* feat(Classes/Oracle): bounded-query oracle classes and P^{NP[O(log n)]} (cslib-community#2062 M1)

Define ComputableInPolyTimeWithOracleQueries, PWithOracleQueries and PNPLog,
with the basic API: P, NP and coNP inside PNPLog (one request to SAT through
Cook-Levin), closure under complement, and inclusion in P^NP.

Move mem_NP_image and image_SAT_mem_NP from PH/Kannan into the small topic
module Classes/NP/Image so that oracle classes can use them without
importing Kannan's circuit dependencies.

* feat(Classes/Oracle): name the one-request program queryBit

Expose the single-request program with its interpretation, request list
and oracle PPT certificate, so that oracle programs with several requests
can count them.

* refactor(Classes/Oracle): share the one-request program between Closure and BoundedQuery

Move `queryBit`, its interpretation and request equations and its strict oracle PPT
certificate into the new module `Classes/Oracle/QueryBit`, imported by both
`Oracle/Closure` and `Oracle/BoundedQuery`. `PolyTimeOracleProgram.of_query` is now built from
`queryBit` instead of repeating the request/map/take construction and its proofs.

* feat(Classes/Hierarchy): coarse nondeterministic time hierarchy by lazy diagonalization (cslib-community#2031)

* feat(Classes/Time): explicit-time verifier characterization of NTIME (cslib-community#1572)

Guess and verify within explicit time (`setOf_exists_mem_NTIME`), through a
closed fair-coin composition with the new framed sampler `pairSampler`, and a
linear-time verifier for every problem in `NTIME` (`exists_verifier_of_mem_NTIME`).
Infrastructure toward the nondeterministic time hierarchy.

* refactor(Classes/Space): use the public bounded-existential edges in setOf_exists_mem_PSPACE

The private existsEdge and savitch_existsEdge duplicated the public
boundedExistsEdge and savitch_boundedExistsEdge; expose the definition so
clients can match it against Savitch's edge test.

* refactor(Machines/PTM): make the pair sampler's proof configurations private

The induction configurations `PairSampler.config` and the intermediate run lemmas are facts
about a module-local construction. Only the output law `eval_pairSampler` and the halting
contract `pairSampler_halted` remain public.

* refactor(BigO/Bounds): make ComputableInO.mono_time public

Weakening only the time bound of `ComputableInO`, keeping the space bound, is a general
monotonicity law. It now sits beside `ComputableInO.mono` instead of as a private copy in
the lazy-diagonal hierarchy.
